  • I love Vintage Peavey Speakers. I have four SP5 with 15 inch Black Widows and Peavey 22 compression drivers. one of the diaphragms bit the dust at a recent gig, let get this speaker repaired and back in service quickly!

Thank you very much for this video. I have a pair of SP5-Ti speakers which are my main tops and have been since 1993. Never a problem until 2 years ago I discovered one of the horns was crackling. I forgot about it until I was looking to use one of them as a monitor for a drummer when I discovered it. Decided to final fix it since I am in a band that might need them.
I did not even think of EBay. IMHO a scum company but I took a chance.
I feel these are very very good speakers and the horns make it. Love how they sound with a good condenser mic on high-hats and rides. Excellent for vocals also. Very under-rated.
BTW a good video would be how to replace the diaphragm instead of the entire driver.
    Thanks

Yes I did this once and how do I deal with a failing Crossover in these. I suspected the horn was blown and it was but I’m guessing the crossover is bad because you can hear crackling in the woofer and it makes me mad because paying almost 300 for a pair I expected them to be amazing but I was wrong I lost money in mine but oh well those are amazing speakers for all uses I DJ with mine

I don't feel like the crossover is bad.... I feel like the voice coil is dragging on the magnet in the speaker. Hook the speaker up without the crossover to confirm. Pull the magnet off the speaker, inspect and carefully clean all surfaces and reassemble and test again. Worst case you can replace the speaker. Asked on a 15 inch Scorpion for about 130 dollars. Good luck!

Measure across the + and - terminals of the voice coil with an ohm meter to check for on open wire before just assuming it is bad.

On the other hand, when no sound comes out of it, it's bad. I replaced one the other day that worked but sounded scratchy... It's 100% now...

I NOTICED YOU DIDN'T ADD FERROFLUID TO THE GAP. MY RX22'S CAME WITH A VILE OF PARTIALLY DRIED UP FLUID THAT I SMEARED AROUND THE GAP. IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH OR SHOULD I BUY NEW FLUID AND ADD IT IN ? THANKS, GREG.

This is new to me... I will have to research it. What is it for?

@@GlennsSpeedShop I JUST REALIZED THAT THE GAP FOR THE VOICE COIL IS IN THE DRIVER WHERE THE COIL SLIDES INTO AND I NEED GOOD FLUID PUT IN. I ORDERED TWO VILES OF FERRO FLUID FOR THE TWO INCH COIL FOR ABOUT$ 35 BUCKS. WITHOUT GOOD FLUID TO KEEP THE COIL FROM OVER HEATING IT WON'T SOUND RIGHT OR LAST AS LONG. THE OLD ONE HAD DRIED UP FLUID AND FROZE UP.

I am getting no sound from a tweeter in a used SP5XT. Would replacing the diaphragm as you did in the video likely fix my problem? Thanks.

Most likely. I actually buy replaced meets 6 at a time to get best price, it's nice to have spares. You can unplug the leads and throw an ohm meter on it and if it's open, then for sure it's bad. Unless you suspect an issue with the protection components, then likely it's bad. If you have an old speaker laying around hook it up to verify or pull the horn out of the other speaker.

I have a 22xt horn and flare bought for a tenner 10 years ago, 5xt made me laugh as if I was a rich man! But with the peavey maybe I am 🤔 😂 never heard of this ferrofluid?

You are correct, these are Peavey Scorpion series. Like the Black Widow Series, the baskets are replaceable for about 130 bucks. I happened to pick up a complete new in the box Scorpion for 60 bucks and have it as a spare should I need one. A freind gave me a complete used 15 in Black Widow that needs a new basket as a spare, one day I hope to find a low cost basket for it...
