I had these speakers for 5 years in Uni days. Thoroughly enjoyed them. The only speakers I paid £70 for and sold them 5 years later second hand at £82. Says it all really.
When I was looking for a pair of speakers to replace my large Akais, I auditioned many from Bose, Yamaha, Quest, and Acoustic Profile. Then I turned to Mission and it was the 700 that I chose and still have. They were the most expensive of all that I auditioned, but they have never been a disappointment. They're perfect as a stand mount and bookshelf I've had my pair of Mission 700s since 1998 and they've done me very well Now they're part of my home theatre with the matching Mission 704 towers and 70C3 centre. I using an Energy S-10.3 for the subwoofer. I also have the Mission 702 stand mounts. Technically this is the Mission 70 line which was aimed as an entry level for those on a budget. Whether looking for a simple stereo set up or for home theatre, these will do the job! I won't be getting rid of mine anytime soon.
I'm just putting together a retro cinema setup for nostalgia. I had a pair of 701's & 702e's in the late 90's and remember them being quite good. I'm buying a pair of 700 this time for rears, and intend to pick up some 702e's again for the fronts. Both of these are readily available in the UK from eBay, but I desperately want to find a Mission 70C2 or 3 to go with the setup, not so easy to come by in the UK anymore. How does your 70C3 perform with movie dialogue?
@@ianwalton7893 I really like the 70c3. It seem to be pretty good. It's quite a step up from the 70c2 since the cabinet is much larger depth wise. I was quite shocked with the size difference when I bought a 70c2 for very cheap to take the tweeter and the mount from it and replace it with the one in the 70c3. My 70c3 didn't come with the original tweeter and the seller replaced it with something else and glued it to the tweeter mount. I find the dialogue is very good. The badge on them can be reoriented on them so you could get two more and stand them upright for your fronts. You will get more bass due to the dual 6.5" drivers along with the larger cabinet and dual ports. The 70c3 is bi-wireable too.
@@ianwalton7893 You'll more likely find the 70c1 or maybe the 70c2. The 70c3 is a rarity. I was lucky to find mine on ebay a few years ago. My problem was that I'm in Canada and the seller was in the USA. Fortunately I have a friend who in the USA who I could ship the speaker to and then I just go down to pick it up.
@@cornwalldragon4617 Yes there is a few 70C1's knocking around on the selling sites. I may well pick one up so as not to miss out completely on a matching center. But I will still keep up the search for a C2 or C3 regardless :)
Had the 700 loved them it was 2003 when I got them i always wonted the 701s or the top of the line ones they were sold in richer sounds grate for the price as a starter speaker and if you open them the mid bass drives are well made aluminium basket really good for the price you would pay
I have refoamed the Mission 707, and 761 speakers. They sound phenomenal 😍. The cabinets are not so great, they pass. That midrange sound is so damn amazing I'm my opinion!
I had a bunch of the more budget aimed Mission over the years. 760, 760i, 761i, two pair of 700 (used in a home theater), some floor standing 733, and various Mission center channels. Oddly my favorite to this day, despite reviews suggesting the 760i were better were the 760. AMAZING for their small size. If you ever get the opportunity to test drive some check them out. They remain in my collection. Actually, all of these are piled up in various nooks and crannies of my home.
@@jordancliff Honestly. I was underwhelmed with them. Currently, still have them in my livingroom setup. Grabbed them cause they were What HiFi's loudspeaker of the year at one time. Got them cheap at a garage sale down the street from me. They're good. Just was expecting more from a budget loudspeaker of the year. Admittedly I haven't added balast to the bases.
Nice to know that your into your Missions. What is your opinion on the 761i please? I own a pair of these and I find they have less shout at moderate to high ish volume.
@@ChillToMusic87 I always appreciated the Mission sound. They held their own against much newer $400ish loudspeakers. Personally, I thought they were a little light in the base. If you can get them at a reasonable price grab them. I wouldn't spend anything insane on them though.
The design to have the dual ports between the woofer and tweeter was to make these compact for bookshelf use, but they do excel as stand mounts. The bigger stand mounts in the 70 line have a large port under the tweeter. So if the 700 was designed with the port under the tweeter, these would be much bigger speakers. Their size is great if you have those wire cube shelf systems.
Just found a pair for 50dollars Canadian, which is abt 35-40 American. They are supposed to be mint, so if what you guys in the comments say's is true. Good score.
I bought a similar pair of speakers today at a thrift store for 12 canadian dollars (around 9 usd) they are in better shape than yours and sound amazing. I'm pairing them with an old Denon pma250 amp.
There were very few crap speakers made by Mission in the 80's and 90's. I am still using my Model 70 MK2's and consider them to be more than worthy of use with any of my amplifiers. The 760i SE was one of the best bargains ever to be sold and can still be found easily today. Not so keen on their current line up though, they definitely took a down turn in recent years, churning out boring looking boxes with a rather mediocre and boxy sound.
I have the bigger brother to the 760 the 761i great sounding speaker also. Try the LX2 a fairly recent model, not the mk2 version though. Great sounding and looking speaker.
@@ChillToMusic87 I would like to add a pair of 761's to my collection, the twin woofer one that is, not the older version. I have a pair of LX2 I think, or LX1, it is one of those. I thought it was okay but it did not excel in anything particular in my opinion.
Hey Johan, I don’t know the year my Mission 700s were produced, but they seems to have been built from 1981-1985. From pictures, mine seem to be the later version. Your Wharfedale 220s are rated at 86 dB sensitivity so at the same volume with the same power they may sound lower than the Mission 700s with their 89 dB sensitivity.
Mine seem to have lost thier high end edge, listening to a cymbal ride aint what it used to be ( after 20 + years ) . They haven't changed at the mid and low end though.
These are great for home theatre! Match them up with the other speakers offered in the Mission 70 line and you'll have a nice home theatre set up. Get two pairs of them and the 70C1 plus a good subwoofer and they will do you fine.
@@whateverhappend I can't stress how good these speakers are! They were targeted for those on a budget and sound and look amazing! I would probably use something more revealing for classical or other generally well produced music. But rock and pop from the era that the 700s belong always sounds overly bright on good modern speakers. The Missions 700s attributes actually work in their favour in that scenario.
