  • My portable observatory dome and 18" telescope setup. This was taken at my club's dark sky site near Deer Trail, CO. The observatory dome is made from PVC pipe and fittings and a packcloth cover I made myself. The dome is of my design since 1991. The telescope is a JMI NGT-18 18" Newtonian. I do astrophotography with this setup. An image taken that night at the end of the video.

Would you post some design plans/detail of what hardware you used?

I would like to, but my internet connectivity is not too good these days.

Wonderful! How long does the windshield take to be installed? Also, do you have a DIY guide for it? Thanks, clear skies!

It took about a half an hour for the dome plus the telescope setup and alignment. It took less time when I was younger. I was 65 at the time on the making of the video and also recovering from neuropathy of the feet. Slowly getting back, I've done 3 visits to the DSS this winter season thus far. As for a video of the making of this dome, it will be out as soon as my internet access improves. It is spotty due to old equipment in my neighborhood.

@@Starphot Thank you, I hope your body recovers fully soon. Astronomy will keep you your spirit young! Looking forward to the making-of video.

That is an awesome setup, always looking forward to your next vid, never seem to disappoint . Starphot i know this is completely off topic but im having a hard time finding info. I recently purchased an Old SAC7 imaging camera i believe this cam is based off the Logitech 4000 only thing is it comes with a 25 pin parallel port, im looking for a way to modify it and also software to run as i think Astro Video is out of date. Any ifo and or help would gladly be appreciated. Thank you for your time, Clear Skies. KennFromTX

@KennFrom TX, It is an old camera. There are Parallel to USB adapters, but the program may not work on modern OS. Quick Cam 10 shows that it supports the Quick Cam 4000. Get a hold of Logitech for more info.

and how did you facilitate the curves in the PVC?

Paula P, They were bent using 2 burners of an electric stove with a piece of galvanized gutter soldered at both ends filled halfway with water. A piece is put in the boiling water for 20 to 30 seconds. Pulled out it will start to form the curve. I then put it on a form until it cools enough to hold its shape while I put in a new piece in the boil and then remove it from the form before removing the newer piece from the boil. A video on that later when my provider fixes the internet connections to my neighborhood.

Have you ever thought about selling the plans? This would work nicely for me and I especially like the covering. I am just starting astrophotography and am about your age. I do believe I could handle this. Thanks

The how-to video later. The cover is packcloth nylon. I've done ripstop, but that last only a couple of years. I use a "student Singer" machine I got with a sale promo at a fabrics place with a heavy needle. I only broke one needle with the cover shown. My last packcloth cover lasted 9 years with moderate heavy setup and take-down cycles with sun exposure. Portable, not meant for a permanent structure.
