  • The "Strengthening Design Governance for Safer Online Spaces in Kenya" workshop aims to empower designers, software developers, and tech practitioners with vital skills to combat harmful content online.
Hosted by Ushahidi and supported by the National Coalition on Freedom of Expression and Content Moderation in Kenya (FeCoMo) and UNESCO, this workshop took place at Aga Khan University during DataFest Africa on July 17-18, 2024.
Experts from UNESCO and Ushahidi led engaging sessions on tackling misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, focusing on the role of user interface and user experience design in promoting online safety. Participants collaborated in practical sessions to co-design safe digital practices tailored to Kenya's unique landscape.
The event culminated in actionable recommendations to enhance safety and user experience on digital platforms, emphasizing accessibility, inclusivity, content moderation, data privacy, age-appropriate content, and marketplace integrity.
Part of UNESCO's "Social Media 4 Peace" initiative, funded by the European Union, this event highlights the importance of protecting freedom of expression and promoting peace through digital technologies. Join us in exploring how technology developers, big tech, and social media companies are working towards upholding human rights standards in digital spaces, fostering peaceful coexistence in Kenya and beyond.
