- The Ukrainian military claims to have shot down a Russian Ka-52 ‘Alligator’ helicopter in Kharkiv region. Ukraine has previously claimed to have used the Piorun to take out Russian Su-24 & Su-25 aircraft, as well as a Mi-24 helicopter. Poland delivered the Piorun MANPADS to Ukraine just weeks before Russia’s February 24 invasion.

Recall - Poland is: The main hub for the transport of weapons to Ukraine (Rzeszów airport and ground infrastructure), the supply of Polish weapons (over 300 heavy vehicles - including 240 tanks), the supply of automatic weapons (MSBS Grot), anti-aircraft launchers (Piorun), hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition (155mm, 7.62mm, 5.56mm, 120mm, etc.), fuel transports, hundreds of thousands of tons of food, medicine, and most of all - providing shelter to over 2-3 million Ukrainian children and women. Without Poland, this war would have been lost long ago.
Excellent Observation, less we forget in the fog of this war who is principally responsible for keeping Ukraine in this fight. Zelensky, the man, and his Military staff, and Poland, the country and its valiant leaders will be recognized by historians as the Gatekeepers to victory of not one country defending its borders but of freedom seeking democracies, no matter how imperfect, over brutal autocracies and dictatorships in the early 21st century of this planet.

The massive advantage the Piorun has, is it's capability of targeting very low flying targets (10m).
This completely nullifies the low approach possibility for attack helicopters.
Also not mentioned in this video is PPZR Piorun’s (Grom-M missile’s) immunity to jamming and capability to ignore being mislead by flares, with its optoelectronic infrared-laser seeker programmed to ignore flares by still keeping focus and trajectory on the initially selected target heat source.

Yep, Piorun are better than Stingers. In the USA, they recently tested MANPADs that are supposed to replace stingers and as far as I know, PIORUN won with all competitors. Therefore, the US Army has already ordered the first sets of Piorun.

There is one more thing - Piorun uses simple AI which can differentiate between original target and flares shot targeted plane.
No. AI on any current weapon is just a marketing term. There is no AI. Just algorithm.
For Piorun, basically it records the signature of target during targeting and cuts off tracking of other heat signatures that don't match the profile recorded when missile was launched. This is possible since it converts all signals to digital form, unlike stinger/igla ect. When you have something in digital form, it is possible to process data and feed back processed version to missile itself. It also makes the missile itself programmable. It opens up interesting possibilities for future as well. If this would be scaled up to larger missiles and include some sort of data link - then you could get lock on after launch capabilities, which could be combined with networked sensors and predictive algorithms to fire at approaching targets outside effective range of the missile and it's own seeker. Though piorun's seeker can already see like 12km, so twice it's range... so on current MANPADS it would've been useless and expensive to try such solutions. But if scaled up version would appear with longer range then it might be more worthwhile.

@@Beneficiis How is code supposed to differentiate between target and a flare? I have no idea as a programmer but with use of simple AI which task is to tell which is flare which is helicopter by learning it millions and millions of times. So there are two possibilities
a) Piorun uses an AI data but then there would be network needed to output images of target to the backend data to say yes if it's target no if it's a flare
b) Piorun does have a data of images of those things but that would make mistakes, in video it claims 100% accuracy
c) Piorun does run simple AI in raspberry pi-like pc

It's definitely not AI.
Just simple code made out of logic loops that get data from sensor. And yeah, it does have CPU & memory to run that... obviously. Running that one process entire time if launcher is turned on or rocket is in flight.
It looks at thermal signature, takes snapshot before it's fired, then constantly filters out "new" signatures from it's targeting data, going only after one it "saw" during launch.
There is no machine learning involved. Probably couple thousand lines of code only that tell it how to filter out "noise" which includes strong thermal signatures such as flares.
Larger modern heat seeking missile used on jets also have that. It's not flawless, but it works more often than not.
Think of it as mapping pixels between camera input and some photo.

US Army recently bought hundreds of Piorun manpads for tests. They want to replace stinger with new manpads.
We always test but Stingers are the standard for manpad .I do like the UK Starstreak,but what is most important are drones,especiall anti drone drones.We have to clear the air of Russia drones, even using expensive means and fill the air with Ukraine operated drones.
And that is perfectly reasonable. Stingers haven't been produced in almost two decades and the assembly line has been dissembled. So the US either has to design a replacement really quickly or just go 'off the shelf'.
This is the best product commercial I've seen in years, if this was on tv I wouldn't have to change channels during the breaks 🤩, looks amazing.

It is great news that our allies are contributing in many ways to the battle in Ukraine including demonstrating brilliance in improving our collective stock of defensive weapons. This is an excellent bit of news.
Let's not assume that only US weapons can be technologically superior. Defending the West is a joint effort.

This will be the best UA manpad against drones because it's the only one with proximity fuze. Also what is not mentioned here it has different attack modes different for aircraft different for helicopters and seperate for UAV's. US made an order before the war 160 lunchers(?). It is a possible replacement for stinger since stinger is so old. High effectiveness is not an accident here previous much worse GROM was already very succesfull in RUS vs Georgia war. The secret sauce is the tracking head - very sophisticadted digital signal processing ignores flares easily and other countermeasures also good quality NV.

One unique advantage of NATO isn't just the collaboration of assistance but also the variety of equipment. An enemy will have an extremely difficult time developing counter measures for them all.

@@aleksanderfiold7554 US bought 300 Pioruns but to new tests only. They compared Stinger to the Piorun. Stinger had 70% accuracy, Piorun 100%. US is still looking for a new MANPAD. The Americans demanded that foreign companies, if they want to make an offer, they have to do it with a US partner because they prefer producing on licence.
The stinger has been around since the late 70's, it's been modified, upgraded, but it's still 40+ year old piece of equipment and the US military decided not to upgrade the missile a few years back. The UK has a much better MANPAD and the Polish MANPAD I would have to say is better than the Stinger, it is a newer design with more up graded parts. MANPAD's will be getting away from IR heat seekers and relying on laser lock on's like the UK MANPAD.
For the Ukrainian Infantryman out in the frontline, the best MANPADS are the ones that are on his hands! The ones in the shelves in Germany are not as good!

They don't really shoot down warplanes, but more like slow moving drones that are civilian made.
The American Stinger shoots down warplanes 110% of the time, when used by the U.S. Military.
@@DriveLaken Nope, stingers are a pretty good deterrent and weapon against helicopters. A modern jet fighter basically has to be an overconfident jackass for a stinger to have a good chance of hurting it. If the pilot comes in fast and dives to drop weapons or even better just uses guided munitions and drops at range at altitude the stinger shooter is going to have a very hard time using the weapon and an even harder time using it effectively.
This polish manpad is better but that's expected because it is much newer and even then it only pushes back the attacking warplanes doesn't take them out of their engagement envelope.

I think German policies towards Russia were defendable until 2008. There is however certainly no way to justify Germany's positions and actions since 2014, with the most glaring example being signing North Stream 2 in 2015 against outspoken opposition from most if not all eastern partners. And it is true that Germany is pretty selective in application of their historic responsibilities. There is a lot of relativity strangely well aligned with economic interests there.
In 1990 I believed we would be able to closely integrate all of Europe including Russia (that has its economic base and most of the population in Europe) and dissolve Nato within 20 years. I was wrong. In hindsight there was never really any interest in Russian elites (defined by power, there certainly was in their intellectual elites, but a good part of them just left) to modernize and liberate Russia. They recognized pretty much the moment the Sowjet Union collapsed that it was a chance to make it a pure oligarchy after having had to do all the ideological window dressing for so long. A good outcome was never really an option.

The Stinger was designed in 1967. It went into service in 1981. The U.S. hasn't bought a Stinger from Raytheon in 18 years. A lot of the components the missile is made of our end of life.

Who knows? I haven't seen any data out of Ukraine on numbers and types brought down by which system.
What I do know is that when Stinger's started showing up the numbers of aircraft brought down per day started going up to where they were more than those brought down in the first week not long afterward. Whether this was Stinger or some other reason, again, who knows.
I also know that when Javelin started appearing the numbers of tanks cooked/day seemed to go way up. Hopefully eventually they will go back down, because there won't be many to kill.
I don't really care which one is better, as long as they are all bringing down those damned Russians, preferably in a flaming mass.

There is nothing low-tech inside Piorun, except RDX warhead and grip :) For example advanced image processing allows to ignore flares, Piorun "understands" what it sees.

It is an evolution, had serious snags/delays in development, good that the program produced a viable weapon which is in production. Not being (incrementally) better would be a major embarrassment.
And we are running out of Stingers, and many components are end of life.

As of today Raytheon is looking at upgrading the end of life components and continuing the Stinger.

Poland is doing own production/development for normal financial and "keep up the capability in R&D" reasons, but Poland cannot supply whole NATO, including US, with manpads. Leaving production capacity issues aside, Poland is simply too close to a frontline. One hit by a cheap rocket from Russia and the whole factory is out. US is deep rear, it is a huge asset to whole NATO and it better be nurtured.

There is great one on the Sun newspaper channel, two Russian shark helicopters blown to bits by anti aircraft fire but not by manpads. There is one of two getting shot down over a reservoir by stingers (I think) and at hostomel airfield a whole bunch of Russian helicopter get destroyed on the ground, so there’s that… but all that is most likely fake right? Stingers are old AF and due for a new replacement for last several years. Many things are probably at least equivalent by now.
