This seems to be a landmark book regarding the arrival of Christianity in India (both how and when) that counters the established church narrative on this delicate question of identity for Indian Christians. The St. Thomas in south India hypothesis has long been under siege and quite a number within the Christian community in India (particularly Kerala) no longer hold this theory as being central or immutable. The new approaches of the author, using the tools of anthropology, linguistics and genetic studies, seems to suggest a very different story, and one that seems plausible in the light of his research. However, the author/speaker seems to be unable to extricate himself from the tangles of his own Christian faith to provide clarity on the nature of the religious practices and world views that were present when these foreign faiths arrived upon Indian shores, notably Kerala. He mentions the Manicheans! But what about the Hindus whose civilisation and culture long predates that of the Manicheans or any other group likely to have settled in these parts? The very openness and accommodative nature of Hinduism has been to its great dteriment. It has caused it to be digested and eventually demonised by outsider faith systems. His thesis makes sense. It seems only natural to assume that itinerant travellers/traders would take up with local women and spawn new communities over time. It is also likely that the uneven economic and social power differentials that existed between the visitors (traders from the middle east) and the people of native societies could have set the stage for their eventual conversion to the new belief systems of the foreigners. Whether these cross-overs took place out of convenience, conviction or coercion we will never know. Probably they were a mixture of all depending on the circumstances. This is also a matter that neither the Church nor the Christian community want to give much thought to. It has been noted that the discomfort or trauma of conversion lasts only for one generation. After that it gets internalized and no visible conflict is registered. The old faith is not only left behind but looked down upon as being unequal and unworthy. This drastic vision shift has been the reason for the singular success of the Abrahamic faiths outside their centers of origin. It is probably to hide these 'very human’ beginnings of new faiths in foreign lands that institutions (like the church) were inclined to create spectacular origin stories, and the Thomas myth seems to be one of them to give this newly arrived faith in India a standing that it did not have to begin with. It was perhaps quite hard for the early Christian communities to acknowledge that their new found religion, like all significant cultural exports, was the byproduct of simple human needs - to flourish and to propagate, be it goods or new gods.
