Gautama Buddha, in his teaching, did not focus on religion as much as just teaching people to live a life that lead to deep self awareness and hopefully awakening from the illusions that they incarcerate themselves with. If you want to call that religion, fine, but if you dig deeper into the teaching, you'll see that religion is hardly what matters, and personal and communal well-being is paramount.

The idea of "Hinduism" as a single, unified religious system only dates back to about 1850. Tthe word "Hindu" existed already -it was a Persian word for the people across the Indus river, and later the Moghul ruling class used it to mean "everybody else." Only in the nineteenth century did people start to use it to mean a specifically religious group. "Buddhism" is almost as artificial a concept. Both terms are western colonial impositions on the incredibly rich and diverse religious and cultural mosaic of Asia.
But even if there was no "Hinduism" and no "Buddhism", there was still a lot of philosophical and religious action! All over India there were renouncers starting up groups of like-minded people trying to figure out the meanings of life and death.
The Buddha was one of them. By some historical accident, his message, his interpretation of Indian thought turned out to be popular. Popular enough, in fact , that it could be exported beyond India.
But there is no evidence that he set out to start a new religion, because "religion" is another of those modern western words thaty would have made no sense whatsoever to people in the Buddha's time. He saw what he saw and he taught what he taught. There were hundreds, maybe thousands of other teachers at the time whose messages have not survived to the present day.
To call one set of thoughts and ideas Hinduism and another Buddhism is to use a modern, European set of concepts. That does not invalidate them - they can be more or less useful to anyone, not just Europeans. But you cannot realistically extend those ideas back in time to 6th century BCE India, The Buddha would have asked "What the Niraya are you talking about?"
