Doing a title search before representing an aircraft is a great piece of advice. I usually ask the owner if there's any liens and wait for escrow to run the report.
That’s also a good way to go about it! I had a couple of owners tell me there was no liens and then they showed up when escrow ran the report almost costing me the sale, so now I just do it before I start, that way if there are any issues we can work them out sooner rather than later.
A lien can be placed, if an aircraft owner doesn’t pay for a service, loan etc a lien would prevent the owner from selling the aircraft. Sometimes people purchase aircraft without checking the title (this happens a lot with piston aircraft) So I recommend brokers to always check it before representing the aircraft for sale. Sometimes there’s no lien but you might find other issues such as a break in the chain of title. Hope that answers your question.

What kind of license do you need to broker airplane sales? I’ve worked for a 135 company and we had a sales department. Was always curious.
Hey Troy, you don’t need a license to become an aircraft broker but you need know about aviation and the sales process of an airplane.
How can I do that? I am interested in becoming a airplane broker
Great Info !
What is a "lien" in aircraft brokerage?
