  • Serif just dropped a major 1.9 update to Affinity Photo which happens to have a new tool for Astrophotography. They have now included Astrophotography stacking mode into the program which is a one stop shop for aligning, correcting and stacking photos to produce a final image ready for curve and colour adjustments.
    It allows for calibration of your bias, flats, darks, flat darks with the light integration files. It allows for sigma clipping which is great for removing imperfections which means it’s a suitable substitute for many other stacking programs.
    The next step is background reduction which while basic (automatic based on selected points) it does give a good effect and allows for real noise reduction in the image.
    Currently Affinity Photo has a Free Trail Available - affinity.serif.com/
    Chapters:
    0:00 Welcome to Affinity Photo update 1.9 in 2021

    This new 1.9 update to Affinity Photo is really something, the fact that they added in a dedicated astronomy stacking routine is something! Anyone else find any other upgrades to the software that helps process astrophotography images?

    Nice clear video! I was curious about this photo editor but was not sure if it could replace my use with photoshop, but now with this it became a no brainer!

      This new update has definitely tightened the gap for sure, still playing around with all the new tools myself but unless you are doing something extreme Affinity Photo (and its companion programs depending on your need) seem to cover all the bases.

      Serif’s 1.9 update to all the Affinity line-up is quite impressive. They are really trying to take a shot at narrowing the gap with Adobe products and this Astro Stacking algorithm is a huge step forward than the manual process that existed before.

    I saw it on their update video. I’m considering dumping Adobe after twenty years with them. It was nice to see a fellow astrophotographers opinion. Thanks for sharing.

      Glad you found it useful Garnett, I'm still exploring all the new features but this update is a massive leap forward from where the software was a few years ago when I last looked at it.

      If you haven't seen them yet, you should check out James Ritson's dedicated astro macros for Affinity. He works for them in some capacity, but is an avid astrophotographer as well. Just search for his name on UA-cam and you will see.

      I do hope this comes to iPad as well however its quite a intensive processing step (even with my PC Tower) so not sure how feasible stacking on a iPad will be unless its the "latest & greatest" model. Which model do you have?

    In GIMP and PS I use the levels adjustment to align the RGB colours on the histogram. Is it the same process in AP? I have just installed AP and am still getting familiar with the process. Hope to see more videos on AP processing.

      I'm hoping to post a tutorial video soon on editing astrophotography with Affinity photo, however I'm still learning it myself and I want to make sure I get it "right" for the next step before I put out a video saying "this is the way to do it!" as its a slightly different method / thinking than PS uses.

I also have a regular telescope which is easier to carry about for general viewing all these telescopes were second hand but am very grateful to have them! • @EmberSkyMedia
      @EmberSkyMedia  11 місяців тому +2

      Meteor stacking is done similarly but instead of averaging out the stack you want to add or screen the layers. Trick is you generally do a stack (for the background) and then apply the frames with meteors in them afterwards.

      There is a feature in UA-cam where you can slow the pace of the video. I tried to pick an ideal pace so people didn’t start skipping ahead and potentially miss a vital step.
