ZWO SeeStar S30: Best Budget Telescope for Aspiring Astrophotographers?
In this video, I’m checking out the ZWO SeeStar S30, the new, compact afforable smart telescope from ZWO, which has been a hot topic for astrophotographers. With its $350 price tag, the S30 is currently one of the most affordable smart telescopes out there, but is it worth it? I’ll go over the specs, features, and how it compares to its bigger sibling, the ZWO SeeStar S50 (priced at $500). Whether you’re just getting into stargazing or looking to upgrade, this breakdown should help you decide if the S30 is the right fit or if the S50’s extra features are worth the investment.

Sky Atlas Walkthrough for the Dwarf 3 Smart telescopes
Переглядів 7 тис.6 місяців тому
With the Dwarf 3 immient release DwarfLabs has been hard at work developing an improved Sky Atlas for the Dwarf App. This atlas works for both the Dwarf II and Dwarf 3 (and I'm assuming Dwarf 4, 5, 6, when they eventually get released in the years to come) in order to find targets in the night sky and automatically have the small smart telescopes goto those targets and start imaging, which real...
$449 Dwarf III Smart Telescope - Is there a reason NOT to buy one?
Переглядів 17 тис.6 місяців тому
So the Dwarf III Smart Telescope is finally here at a suprisingly low price of under $500 ($449 early bird) which according to the specifications offers a significant improvement over the Dwarf II of a larger optical train (35mm vs. 24mm), update Starvis 2 sensor from Starvis 1, and you can image up to 60 seconds which is 4x longer than the orginal Dwarf II's 15 second exposure cap. I mean what...

Do you recommend Dwarf 3 for someone who knows nothing about telescopes and very little about photography? I can’t decide what to purchase for my very first telescope, but this one is probably going to be THE one. Thank you for the tutorial. ✌🏻
Also, what is a good quality tripod for the telescope?
The Dwarf 3 is a lot of fun and I think its higher resolution (4K vs 1080p of others) is worth it. They also sell a tripod as well as an extra or you can pretty much get any tripod for DSLR with such a small scope.
@@EmberSkyMedia Thank you! 😃
@@Janet4444 happy to help!
nicely done, thanks.
Thanks! Hoping to test more lenses in the new year (I *may* of done some shopping).
@@EmberSkyMedia i'm thinking of picking up a 1961 version of the lens. Do you think that one does as well as a less old version like the one you have?......anyway, i look forward to seeing your past and future vids.
@@gangawerks The issue with older lenses is sample variation and the amount of use (and maybe abuse) the lens has had so far.
@@EmberSkyMedia i'm new to the whole old glass world, but what you're saying makes sense.
Nop
Just wish they offered a red one. 😅
That would be a cool colour!
Hi do these devices have inbuilt IR or do you need a seperate IR source?
They require an external light source, but they are very sensitive to 850nm and 940nm so you can get inexpensive or expensive IR lights. I got for like $10 for 5watts and that's plenty - ua-cam.com/video/2q2qhQp9-3U/v-deo.html
I've seen s30 tracking cars and planes
I've heard it can track quite a few things, but alas I haven't gotten my hands on one at the moment (currently testing the Dwarf 3)
I already ordered one. I sure hope it arrives soon. Thanks for the video.
I’m testing one soon and will have some “how to” videos coming out soon.
@@EmberSkyMedia OK thanks if I ever get one.
i find that the wheel at times does not sit in the tooth groove and i have to readjust down quite often. why so?
Hmm... best to reach out out Black-Cat for an answer, sounds like you don't have enough tension on the belt so you might need a larger sprocket wheel. I'm assuming you live in a hot country?
So does the Atlas have all of the Messier, NGC and Caldwell objects in its inventory and is the Dwarf 3 capable of photographing all of them too?
It appears they have the Messier, NGC, and part of the IC catalogue. I don’t know the exact count but the NGC catalogue has a lot of objects (honestly I stopped scrolling to find out when it ended). There are C (Caldwell) entries in there as well but there isn’t a specific Caldwell list yet. But they are constantly adding things to their Atlas (I did another 123MB download today to add to it) so they are constantly improving it compared to what it was in this video. The Dwarfs can image anything in the night sky, however recognize that a lot of IC, NGC objects are quite small for a wider field setup like the Dwarfs, to get really good images you’d need a dedicated system as I don’t know of any “smart” telescope system that goes past 500mm optics as they tracking and mount really would need to be dedicated German Equitorial at that point to track well.
I have one on order also. Hope it will be soon.
You are going to love it, its so capable!
I used to own a used Celestron 8" telescope some 30 years ago. It took time to set up the tripod, wedge, and scope then align it. One major problem I had was that the views were less than spectacular. Very bright stuff (e.g. Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters, double stars) looked decent. Nebulae and galaxies just looked like puffs of smoke. Very quickly, I realized I needed to photograph stuff to have any resemblance to what I saw in magazines or on the internet. This, of course, needed a camera - an additional expense, and developing film :) . I also needed an atlas and had to hunt down what I was looking for (half the fun of astronomy). The Celestron 8SE is better with automatic tracking. Having said that, you still see images like in the old telescope. You still need a camera - now one that can replace the eyepiece but... it needs to connect to a computer/laptop with stacking and enhancing software - another expense. It becomes an expensive endeavor adding hundreds or thousands of dollars to the cost of the telescope. This Dwarf 3 makes all this MUCH easier. Using telescopes, especially away from your house, becomes a matter of weight and size. Sure, a 14" telescope is nice, but weighs alot for the scope and mount, needs room in your car, and may require 2 people to set up. This scope is very small and only weighs a couple pounds - even a child can do it. It naturally photographs stuff to your phone I believe. With stacking, it can image lots of stuff directly. If you want better images, you can use a PC and software, although recommended, is not necessary. It can also take terrestrial images and has other features. Just imagine what it would take to drag an 8" telescope somewhere on an airplane as opposed to a carry-on.
Absolutely! While my other scopes can handily beat this in a shoot-out the cost is easily 10x and requires a lot of careful adjustments and planning; and its not even fully automated yet (yikes!). This is 100x easier to use and get good results and I'm playing around this week with the automated planner and its pretty much set-up and it will go all night, and then the next night, etc... only clouds seem to stop it (which I have tonight with some rain).
For my own: I have few different Android-Devices,a GOOGLE PIXEL Handy, a 11" Huawei-Tablet and a 24" Mega-Pad and all set up wirh the Seestar app and thats works fine. The 24" Mega-Pad from XORO have a high resolution and the same taken pictures on a small handy display and of the 24" Mega-Pad looks soooooo different, like a movie on the he last millenium to a high tech cinema movie of today. Often the user talking over "time runs out of the battery" and i think for my self how stupid often peeps are. Connect your S30 or S50 during operation/using on a powerstation like Ecoflow or anything else and you can filming or taken videos few days and night in one time🎉 If you capture on daylight the sun, i connect via the usb-C port a 10 Watt or 20 Watt tiny solar panel and power up the S50 (or S30) and never run out of battery power. The sollution are often soooooo easy but most peeps overseen it.
Yes, powering these things longer is pretty straight forward with USB-C, easily connect to the mains or a generator or battery pack etc and you can run these pratically forever.
@EmberSkyMedia @EmberSkyMedia ...and If you observe few hours per day the sun,i connect a little 10 Watt or 20 Watt solar cell via the usb-C port and never run out of energy . 🎉
Most awesome review of SeeStar S30. I learned so much. Thank you!
Glad to help David! Do you have any additional questions?
Personnaly I will never buy Dwarf III until Dwarf VII comes up. Snow White
I’m sure the Dwarf V will be amazing, alas it’s likely a few years off so this is the unit we have today to consider. And it’s likely the best bang for your buck right now.
@13:11 If that's the actual quality of a moon photo then they might as well hide that feature because that blurry picture makes me doubt the overall product.
Its normal, since it is only 30mm the resolution is very low. This "telescope" is only good for bright targets and large ones, hence why they always show andromeda and orion as examples, every other target is difficult with such a small aperture and altaz configuration
It’s a 30mm lens and they went wide, that’s a trade off compared to larger telescopes, everything is smaller and less pixels, but you’ll get more “full” images of most beginner DSO targets.
What is the resolution, "/pixel ( 2.4"/pix would be nice ). And you can take a picture of a crying child, much less than 6m (recomended).
I’ll dive into some deep specs in my next SeeStar S30 video, but spoiler, it won’t include a crying child no matter the close-focus distance.
@@EmberSkyMedia crying child should not be in focus
S50 can easily do 5 hours mosaic? 🤔 Are you using iPhone app?
iPhone App and I could only get 2 hours out of it in my test.
I'd use the WiFi hot-spot from my mobile phone so I can get out in the sticks a bit more
Darker skys always help, even with telescopes with advance filters, the darker the sky the better off you are!
Is it worth getting this over the S50 or should I go for the Dwarf 3? 😊
The wider field of view, extra camera, improved sensor, lower price - I'd pick the S30 over the S50 (dispite the lower resolving power). Between the Dwarf 3 and the S30... if you can afford an extra $150 (+42% in cost) then the Dwarf 3 with its larger optics, 4K sensors, and equitorial mode is notably better.
I found the S50 available new for $390 from a US retailer. Assuming this as the price, does this change your recommendation?
Dwarf 3 provides a lot more features and is also useful for terrestrial stuff. Great for panoramas. They're also planning to add Indi and Ascom driver support. Though, ZWO have superior optics.
@turmanlegalsolution - I'd still likely lean S30 because of the wider field of view (having used the SeeStar S50 all summer - video coming soon), but it would be a coin toss at that price and either telescope would be a good pick.
@mrtransistor6173 - Yeah, the Dwarf 3 has more features and they keep updating the APP with more capabilities that make it a truer "telescope" than the SeeStar series, but for people who value "ease of use" SeeStar has it in the bag.
Great idea with 2.4gh.i didn't know what that meant.i have the D2 and s50
Yep, everyone always assumes the newer faster wifi (or cell system) is “better” but speed comes at a trade off of range and ability to penetrate structures.
Yap, it sure is!
Thanks, I'm trying to get more into bird identification than just image them!
Seems many country roads there
Thats the game preserve where all the animals live, although its a very sparely populated country compared to say European ones.
The wait will be the killer for many. Meanwhile I ordered a Seestar 2 days ago. It arrives today. I had a personal race to see what would come first Dwarf 3 or Mosaic Mode on the Seestar. I'll be able to image all Winter while training on Zwift. For those running a business always undersell, overperform.
The Mosaic mode is a big step forward, that's the cool thing about tech, you always get new features!
Love these guys
Yeah my African Safari Trip was absolutely amazing, I highly recommend it to anyone!
So cool
Very cool, planetary imaging is not my forte, so I'm happy if I can see some cloud bands. I'll have to see if I can improve on this when Jupiter and cooler winter nights arrive!
Wowie
Wowie indeed, although initially we had no idea what was making that racket!
Stopping by from livestream bootcamp. Such beautiful footage wow
Its surprising what I was able to get with just a $500 Smart Telescope (especially when you compare to my $5000 bird photography rig). Its advantage is that birds don't mind getting close to it so you get these wonder sights close-up!
there's one: Seestar
Depends on your needs, although the Dwarf 3 is a soild all rounder package. UI could use some streamlining.
Can i point this to anywhere in the sky or I can only track specific objects which this app support?
Anywhere in the sky that you can currently see in alt-az mod, if you use it in equitorial mod you'll lose a bit of the southern horizon (in the north, and northern horizon in the south).
@@EmberSkyMedia Thanks for answering and I loved your stream :)
@@EmberSkyMedia How is the image quality ? My project involves capturing a zoomed view of a galaxy/moon ... automatically stack images and project that on to the ceiling of my bedroom. Since the projection will increase the size to probably 100" , I am wondering if the image is stretched this much, would it be any good. Would you please share one image you captured using your device so that I can test this :)
consider the exchange rate before you buy
Good tip: This is true for anything purchased in a foreign currency.
Thanks for you 🙏 It's support pass through charger?
Just heard these are under recall :(
Yes : I already have multiple better setups.. But if I was starting astrophotography, I would buy one, especially because of the EQmod (and the price of course)
I've been testing it, EQ mod works really well...
@@EmberSkyMedia well they cracked some equations and then they can tell you where to move the scope in EQ mode to align it.. it's super convenient; where those automated scopes were lacking is really the ALT/AZ which means too many images of low quality / high noise. But in EQ mode, you can probably go 30, 60 or even 90s. That's more than enough is the camera is clean to get a great signal. As I said, if i was starting from scratch or trying to interest someone to astro without facing the wall of issues and difficulties, I would cleary recommend that too
@@astrodysseus the 60second stuff I'm getting looks pretty good!
@@astrodysseus yeah I'm imaging with the Dwarf 3 in EQ mode all the time, working on a full review video soon to show off how good it is!
Has anyone figured out what lens could be added to give Seestar a closer focus? Maybe 10-15m
Unfortunately no, although they just announced the SeeStar S30 so maybe that is better tuned for closer focus?
Don’t worry. My mind is rambling right with you. I want the Dwarf lll. ❤
I've been testing it for a month (video soon) its a solid little performer!
me to
As a Dwarf 2 owner I won't buy the 3. Firmware is updated for the 2 also, so sky atlas EQ mode, ufo tracking and what not are already present on Dwarf 2 also. I have the delux version with filters and I think they are fine. Also hate internal batteries. So I save my money for Dwarf 4 which obviously/hopefully will be a bigger improvement compared to Dwarf 2.
Skipping a generation is not a bad move, yes a Dwarf 4 will likely have even more improvements in a year or two.
Trees are not a limitation of the scope, but of your location.
When it comes with a tiny tripod (or no tripod at all) its worth mentioning that trees will be more of a factor. Best to purchase a proper tripod with these telescopes if you have an unobstructed horizon so you get a bit more clearance.
How can I remove the Astro backround remover after i did something else? where can I find it? /:
I just bought this exact pod, just back from collecting it.I can't wait to set it up.
It’s amazing and totally changes your evening setup & shutdown, makes things a lot easier.
Thank you man! I just bought a telescope for the first time and this video was very helpful
Glad to hear it! It’s a nice small telescope for views of various bright objects! Orion Nebula is rising in the east late at night and by next month it will be a great target to explore!
Yes
is that a cigar on the bottom left,do you mean the Horse head nebula
Meteor strike is an imperfection. -Noted!
Meteor, Satellite, Airplanes… there is enough wizzing around up there that if you included them in each of your frames you’d never see the actual target.
I am enjoying this livestream 5 months later, thanks for doing it and I hope you do more!
Yes the plan is more are coming, Summer is just a bummy time to do it (long days = later nights) so expect more in the fall. What I have been doing is setting up the telescopes and having them image into the morning on their own.
it seems the dwarf 3 is probably going to be amazing for bird watching
Yes, I expect it will really take it to the next level! Also I'm hopeful of imaging animals at night as well (there are two deer in the yard beside my house currently).
So, is this a Dwarf 3 you are using in this video, or are you using a Dwarf 2 but with Sky Atlas (which will be available for D3).
Dwarf 2 with the updated SkyAtlas, I don't have a Dwarf 3 yet but it will use the same Atlas.
Not water proof so still not a buy for me. If I can leave it outside 24/7 I would buy one in a heartbeat.
That is going to be an interesting test (or mod) is to have it setup 24/7 (or as close as possible to that) which basically needs to ensure the unit is water resistant enough. It won’t be waterproof as it should never be emerged in water. But rain… hopefully it will be able to handle some of that.
What andriod phone app can this support?
