  • If you pull a bent breath
through the second hole of a harmonica
tuned to the key of Georgia
while a train moves by on the tail end of dusk
    there is a good chance
you will finally know what it means to rest.
Buddy Wakefield of Kingston, WA is a Vipassana meditator, a three-time international spoken word champion, novice triathlete, author of three books of vulnerability for growth junkies, and one book about healthy backyard chicken-keeping practices, called HENHOUSE (based on Penthouse, but for chickens, and their lovers). In the spring of 2001, he left his position as the executive assistant at a biomedical firm in Gig Harbor, WA, sold or gave away everything he owned, moved to the small town of Honda, Civic and set out to live for a living. He has been doing so ever since, with people he admires, sharing the experiences of over 1,500 venues around the world ranging from San Quentin State Penitentiary to Scotland's Oran Mor. Buddy Wakefield is an avid fan of peanut butter, power napping and chopping wood while being cheered on by his two geese, The Colonel and Mrs. Marple. He notices manners, melting ice caps, accessible enigmas and people who fly under the radar. He strives to observe his breath, and his sensations, full time, without reacting.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This video pulled me out of a very dark place and saved my life and restored my soul.
I have loved Buddy since 2002 but this- this video has helped me so much and I pass it on to others when given the moment thinking it’s what they may need to find their way back to self.
    Thank you, Buddy!

I come back to this video over and over for the same reason. It’s so helpful because, not only does it have a lyrical depth and beautiful rhythm, it also has instructions. Like it’s incredibly practical and ethereal at once. It’s incredible.

I know there is a large chunk of this that is his own recycled material, but man!!! The add ins and the way he's blended some of his on best lines together with such delicate and touching strings. This man. This man. This man.

This has positively redefined poetry for me. Here's the story, if you're willing to listen. I have studied poetry and english literature throughout the entirety of my school life. I would like to consider myself a budding actor interested in pursuing it as a profession. Whatever little technique I claim to possess, I encourage myself to analyse the visual form of humans. This philosophy is most notable when watching others in the art, performing. Thus, leading on to my original comment. Never have I seen or imagined poetry being brought to life off the page as I have witnessed tonight. This is one of those moments in my life when I realise why I have such an avid fascination for expression. Thank you Buddy Wakefield. You have inspired.

There are some seriously impressive spoken word artists if you haven't found any yet homie. I hope you're still persuing your craft. Writing keeps me in check lets me vent and I'm incomplete without it.

"Give the best of the goods to the kids."
This. Base line, simple knowledge. Don't forget. Don't leave this world shity for the children and we will survive. We are to lost in finding self identification, that we forget... we're taking care of something simultaneously. The world and next generation and ourselves. Care about all them. All of them, and maybe "yourself" will be better so we don't have to focus so much on just feeling better. Just my thoughts lol

    niiiice.
it takes years to make love to someone who hates themselves.
spilt water cannot be poured back, don't look back... enough is enough... quit dwelling, forget it, forgive it, right now, as is.
    nothing is against us.
our craving for annihilation will be laid to rest,
with the apocalyptic resentment and the compounding stress.
    yes, said the answer.
    yes, said the breath.
    the consequences are immediate.
so when you breathe, you might try freeing both lungs up.
