Was that Yip Yip an ATLA reference? 👀
Im glad you're starting with this one! Its one of the less popular Zeldas but it was my favorite when i was younger and holds a special place in my heart. It kindof sticks out stylistically and is one of the more visually interesting games imo, but you'll still get a good understanding of how Zelda games flow, particularly the older ones. Its quite appropriately named, as Twilight exists in a sortof weird transitional space between Classic Zelda and Contemporary Zelda. Im sure you can see the fusion of Contemporary's ethereal environments and vast map, with Classic's restricted paths, character design, and overall gameplay.
Dont feel discouraged by any jankiness in it-- thats what makes it unpopular, i believe, and probably has to do with the attack mechanics being modified for the Wii Remote+nunchuck (quick google showed an article titled, "Of gyroscopes and gaming: the tech behind the Wii MotionPlus", written around the release of MotionPlus and this game). While flawed, it at least means most other Zeldas you play will probably come to you a bit more easily. Even horseriding is easier in OOTC, which was made in the 80s-- then again, we used the GameCube controllers for that game. Having been released on the N64, it's controls translate pretty directly to a GameCube controller and also dont rely on a motion capture technology *from the 2000s* that was hardly even 2nd gen in its own line. But, hey, button mashing totally works in a lot of Twilight's combat which is 100% how 'little me' made it through lol. I would LOVE if i could play it with a GameCube controller, that'd probably bump it up a few tiers.
There's a number of other Zeldas available on the Wii. I started playing them on one, some time around the 2010's/very early 20-teens. My half-brother had moved in and brought his GameCube, PS3, and N64, then later bought a Wii on which he downloaded OOT/MM from the Wii store. Eventually we got a hard copy of Twilight Princess, and even after he moved out my sibling and i kept playing and got a disc for Skyward Sword from a friend.
While Nintendo's dystopian attitude toward content and copyright can be pretty overkill, they're smart enough to ensure that one of their most successful series is available across their own devices.
P.s. im honestly not that knowledgeable on the series. There's sooo much out there and i dont know a thing about the majority of the games-- so i get it, if it ever feels daunting. But dont worry, one of the best things about Zelda is the impact it has on the gaming community. That's an impact which has yielded TONS of resources, from little bugs you can exploit (or simply use for shits and giggles) to completionist walkthroughs and tryhard strats. The internet can answer most of your Zelda questions... And also raise more.
    Take this 🗡️
    Its dangerous to go alone!

Hi! Thanks for your response!! And yes, love ATLA :)
I'm really excited to play more Zelda. I usually play old Final Fantasy games so I'm used to being frustrated by older mechanics, it really came in handy here! A lot of people grew up with Zelda but I was a Sony kid, so I never got the chance. But I always remembered the commercials for this Zelda in particular so I'm really glad it got to be my first one!
