Congrats on hitting 3K subscribers! That's a pretty big deal. Another good video here. It will save folks real grief and aggravation if they pay heed to your advice. I learned something today-- I''m a "sample size": 58 aka 7 and a 1/4. Good info as usual. I'm that crazy guy who tells friends about your videos and then they watch them and we talk Panamas and discuss. Crazy. Kev Army grows!

Thank you so much for teaching about this stuff. So few people would concern themselves with this, but you are standing in the gap for us. That's great! I am a 63. I have never had a hat that fit properly in my life. Even with snap back ball caps I am limited. Often times the strap in the back is unfastened. I recently bought a Sombrero and I had to get one of those crazy elastic one size fits most dealio's. I am from Louisiana and it stays crazy hot down here. I have a condition that doesn't allow direct sun on my head for a continuous period of time. Hats are my life.....just not properly fitting ones. Thank you for sharing...
I got stetson open road 7 3/8 it was a bit loose, fearing 7/ 1/4 could be tight I didn't want to return it so I reduced it down a bit with a felt strip, now it fits great. my head 58.
Hi Kevin the number 7 on your Borso. is the old European/French measuring system called Punti ..so a #7 punti is US size 7 5/8, My vintage Borso. that I wear is #6 which is US size 7 3/8. Thanks for your great vids and knowledge. CC
Look in Craig's list,ebay.. people sell large lots of ribbon, blocks, bodies, machines.. Buying used can be more interesting too,u get more vintage, faded and oxidized ribbon..and oddball things from the past that make your work unique
You and I both wear a 7 3/8, which isn't big unless you're looking at vintage hats. The farther back you go, the harder it is to find them in our size. Probably due to the original scarcity, plus people today looking for vintage hats in that size because more people have that hat size now. I was lucky to not only find two in my size, but also Long Oval. I don't see a lot of hats with the extra Long Oval or Wide Oval sizing these days; a regular size 7 3/8 Stetson will fit me, but has gaps over my ears. The Long Oval hats fit me like they were custom made. Fortunately this is something that can be corrected with steam and a hat jack, both of which you guys have in the store.
Scott Raymond good sizes got worn, and used, the stuff that’s left is the stuff that was t worn, small sizes.. plus, they all dehydrate and get even smaller. I’d imagine the people who originally re-discover these hats will grab good sizes too,and leave the small stuff for us.
I will never forget that you got a Mario pen. And that’s the end of my comment Kevin. Naw thats not true cause I gotta thank you. Not only that you teach us about the Hat. You got the talent to make us weirdos look great 👍
KEVIN from JJ HAT CENTER 🎸HATS & GUITARS ! If anyones welcome you are. There was something I didn’t really noticed, I’m in love with hats, headwear in general, seemed like air to me but then again cant stand long without - The history and the spirit every Hat has, deserves - like all arts a response of acknowledgement - honor. The craftsmanship from the person who made it to the person who owns it. Its these intimate moments, where a bond of unity exists and its weird to describe, like music. You are in touch with people their soul. To quote, William Blake: To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour. Something so simple like a Hat, or the guy who sells them. But what Stories they carry - one can tell ☀️ thank you dude
hetiszielig the pre bankruptcy Borsalino hats ran a size small, you’d have to buy it exactly one size too large to compensate. Those were only the hats with leather sweatbands, the travel hats ran larger, more true to size. not sure if this applies to more recently post-bankruptcy purchased hats, but I’d assume they’re using the same equipment,sweatbands..so probably.
Daniel Smith it’s difficult making a subject like numbers interesting.. I think a lot of folks probably skipped this one, 😼I told myself I was going to make this short and simple, but Intend to be a little..uh..long winded.. and I repeat myself a lot. Glad u liked it. Thank you so much for the kind comment. Kev
That's tough, depends on which hat. Most run accurately,or a tiny bit large, not enough to go down a whole size. the hemp Asher runs 1-2 Sizes too big, but most Stetson hats are pretty true to size, maybe running a tiny bit large at times, not much though.. they're all eratic,no way to predict, even the same hat in the same size feels different from a carbon copy of itself
Kevin, your vids are a source of peace during the pandemic. I stopped by the shop to pick up a hat in October, largely to pay tribute. But here's a question -- my gut says, "Buy 1cm bigger and stick in the weatherstripping -- and you'll never be out of luck when a hat shrinks." Sensible, or silly? (Or do I need to buy better hats?) thank you
Not silly. As long as u have access to the padding and use it correctly.. I use 3/8" width "polyfoam weather-seal" under the leather, behind the head. Start with a six inch peice & add 1" pieces on each end to extend it..that way u can remove the end peices when u need to loosen it.
Warning, new ones r not the same, these are pretty bancruptcy, anything made in last five years is VERY different. Not recommending u buy these new, prices shot up,quality down, styles changed
measuring wrong maybe. widest part of head at the brow bone, don't pull tightly, just barely snug.. round up to nearest cm,don't round down. They run true to size and don't Shrink.. Keep measuring.
Hey Kevin, quick question with sizing. My hat size is a 7 with a measurement of 56cm. I saw on the JJ hat center site a beautiful fedora called the Madrid in plum color. I remembered that you suggest buying a size larger for safety, but the size 7 1/8 (57) is sold out. The next size larger is a 7 1/4(58), would that be too large? Should I wait for the 7 1/8 to be back in stock when the shutdown is over? Or is it safe to get it in my own size of 7 (56)?
Tough one, if u wear 7 in a Stetson or something u will be 7 1/8. I think u need the 1/8. If I was helping u in the shop, perhaps I could size down a 7 1/4, depending on how close it was..but from what u wrote, I’d say u need a 1/8 . You can ask if u could get the 7 1/4 with a “sweat wick” inside, they are pads that stick inside the hat, on the sweatband, behind your head..or in front if u want to block sweat too. That might work, tell them it’s kind of a gamble, and a pricey hat, will they toss the pad in for free.. worse case, u send it back, but I think s the right padding, there’s a good chance it’ll work, it’s hard to say without u being here in front of me. But yeah, with a sweat wick, stuck on top of the sweatband,in back is more comfy, but in front, they will block perspiration stains, BUT they stay wet,and feel unsanitary in front, I’d keep the pad behind your head. Try it, if not,u can get a refund .. GL! Kev
Close to the ear, like a half inch or just touching it..it depends on the person. It shouldn't be far from the ear, no more than the width of your finger. I say as close to the ear as u can get,, without bumping into it..if the hat grazes it,fine..but if the ear obstructs the hat, it makes your ear fold in half,or whatever..that's too big.
Tough question because we all like hats to fit differently.. often, the issue w porkpies is that the crown is too shallow, not allowing enough DEPTH in the crown. If the roof of the hat isn't deep enough, u can't pull the hat down deep enough to be stable. If this is the case, u pop out the crown for a second and wear it,u can tell how the hat truly fits,

Thanks for the tutorial Kevin. I wear a 75/8 (61cm) and I want to get a Stetson. Do you recommend a 75/8? I was told Stetson runs large.

That's what I do. Yes.. go up a size, pad it down.. so it's adjustable.. I add or remove padding according to my hair length etc..

I have a Jonathan Richard wool cap which is tagged as USA 7 1/4, cams 58. After measuring my head 4 times it is 56 cams and yet my cap is very tight.
measuring wrong maybe.

After further measuring I get 22 inches or 56 cms. The cap is old so it may have shrunk.

I am 6 7/8 or 55cm and I get some great deals on brims! Pin heads rule!
Its weird that 3x only jumps from 63 to 64, when the others jump two numbers. I know hatters do this sort of thing to confuse us.
I guess it's 64-65
But nobody ever makes 65, it gets cut off after 64
I'm a size 58. 🤣 It all depends on the manufacturer and style of the hat or cap & how recently I got my haircut. 😁👍
I only know iam 7 1/8 for using fitted hats before. Then i learned that in a 57 and 22 plus centimeters .

22-1/8"
