They are beautiful, but they can be buttheads. I got mine from Jonah's Aquarium, and I'm pretty sure they still have some.

They've been hiding a lot lately and only come out during feedings.

Your fish are beautiful. But nowhere near what they can become. If I may. You should put a light on the tank because this species is one of the most spectacular fish alive. Light will show them off to their best advantage. Add Hikari cichlid color enhancer, Specifically for red, to their diet. Also night crawlers and minnows live. I have seen them bite a fair size minnow in half. One bite. For little guys, they have some impressive teeth. For a year and a half I lived in Dallas. They lived in the creek behind the house. I didn’t have a TV. I had a 55 gallon tank. I had 4 long ears, a war mouth and 2 Oscar.

I do have a small light over the tank now, but I only turn it on while I'm home. It gets some serious algae if I leave it on during the day while I'm away.

The light is only for display purposes anyway. However, You can hang pathos ivy and spider plants hanging out of tank, their roots will spread. A LOT. Eventually they will take up enough nutrients that algae can’t thrive. You cat literally cut pieces of pathos and stick the ends in the tank and they will root. The spiders need a hanger. Roots make good structures in the water. What my fish did on Hikari cichlid gold was 75-80% of fish , so the whole fish just below the spine turned bright red. And each scale’s rounded edge was electric blue. With the electric blue lightning bolts across the face. As I recall, the back was greenish. Olive l believe. (This was back in 95.)

@@jessoliver2955 I actually did recently put a couple pathos clippings on the tank with the stems hanging in the water. I'm also looking at various epiphyte plants to shove into the various holes in the wood.

@@qcaquaholic I find Anubias to be hardy and easy to grow. Also you can glue them on rocks, wood etc.

@@jessoliver2955 I'm not trying to take that wood out so I can glue plants on it! lol It took a LONG time for that wood to waterlog enough to sink. The largest piece still isn't completely waterlogged either.

Says you posted this video 1 year ago, so not sure if this will be helpful for you. If you are still having floating issues with the wood, I have done this with large pieces of wood that I couldn't get to stay down even after soaking in the tank for up to and over a year. I always furnished my aquariums with natural wood, rocks and plants, so the smaller gravel substrate did help to hide this trick. If a piece of wood wouldn't stay down I would get a piece of slate cut to fit in the the bottom of the aquarium. I would prop the wood up to the way I liked it best then mark the base of the wood onto the slate with a non toxic crayon or chalk that could be washed off. I drilled, generally 2, 3 or 4 holes into the slate with a masonry drill bit just large enough to clear large flathead solid brass or stainless steel wood screws. Drive the screwws into the wood from the bottom and countersink them. Place the slate down on the bottom of the tank first, if covering with smaller rock or just leave it visible.

It's slowly getting better. When I first put it in, it required 7 good sized river rocks to hold it down. It's down to 4 rocks now. 3 rocks works as long as nothing bumps into the wood...when always happens.
