  • PROJECT SUMMARY: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and USDOT Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITSJPO) Professional Capacity Building (PCB) initiative, connected and automated vehicle education (CAVe-In-A-Box), allows 1) integration of video-based sensors to infrastructure (intersection control system) and 2) demonstration of real-world use cases such as pedestrian detection and vehicle-to-everything messages. In this research project, a CAVe-In-A-Box infrastructure kit, integrated with computer vision-based detection technology, has been utilized as a demonstration tool to showcase real-world use cases such as the real-time vulnerable road user (VRU) safety at intersections. Furthermore, a CAVe-Lite module has been utilized to actively engage 5-12 grade level students in a scaled and hands-on desktop level smart mobility technology.
