    In this video I'm going to show you the super simple way to create a temperature tower in Ultimaker Cura 5. The exact same process works in Cura 4.13 too if you are not on Cura 5 yet.
    The whole process will take about 5 minutes and will enable you to find the perfect printing temperature for any 3d printer filament you want to print with.
    ******The Calibration Shapes plugin is currently not available in marketplace. Watch this quick video that shown how you can still install it • Video *******

    That temp tower script has a big problem that most of these scripts share. Its using an M104 command to change temperature. 104 doesn't wait for the temp to complete changing before continuing. So each band is cooling as its printing: You don't have a band that is just one temp. In a normal print you want that smooth gradient and not something obvious in your print. That's not the use case in a temp tower. Here you want an M109 which is "change and wait", so that each band of change is truly that one temp. I usually go through with Notepad++ and find/replace all those M104 to M109

    Thank you for again a clear explanation. I had to increase the Cura temp tower by 2,125% to ensure every temperature "layer" was 42 layers on my Ender 3 V2 with every layer 0.2 mm, thereby using an offset of 4 layers and a distance of 42, the temperature change occured at exactly the same place in the tower for every temperature "layer". I was a bit confused until I found out that in the gcode the first layer is layer #0, while in Cura the first layer is #1.

    My superb new Elegoo Neptune3 Pro came with a custom version of Cura (4.8.0) which will accept the calibration shapes plugin but doesn't have the TempFan script available in the iist. I understand that the latest versions of Cura now have a profile for the Neptune3 Pro but as I'm a total newbie to 3D printing I'm not keen to change my version of Cura yet as I'm still finding my way with it! Is there any way to set the temperature settings to do this test in such an old Cura version? Love your videos, so well explained, thank you! EDITED - Oh, it's ok, I worked out how to do it! You have to use the "ChangeAtZ 5.2.1(Experimental)" script and trigger it on the Layer Number, set the temperature for that block, then add another script with the next block's first layer number and its block temperature, and so on, so 9 blocks would need 9 scripts. Sorted! EDITED AGAIN - OOPS! The whole tower printed at the same temperature. This caused much head-scratching because I definitely did the post-processing code correctly. Eventually I had to learn what the gcode codes are for temperature changes and examine the gcode that the printer was using to print the tower. And it turns out that if you use the standard Elegoo Neptune3 Pro's SD card method with their custom Cura 4.8.0 version supplied with the printer, the standard transfer file to put on the SD card is a "TFT File" which contains a really nice thumbnail of the build item to display on the printer screen while it's printing. BUT!!!!! That file format seems to strip out any Post-Processing commands! That's really weird, I'm not sure if it's a bug or a convention for TFT files. Anyway, if you want to print with temperature changes on the Elegoo N3P then you have to use "Save to File" and NOT "Save as TFT File" if you're going via the SD card. Printing direct to the printer over USB doesn't have this issue because that doesn't use the thumbnail variant of the datafile. I'll report this to Elegoo but I hoipe this helps anyone similarly stuck with what's otherwise a great way to create your own temp towers :o)

    Hi, I'm noob here, so purpose of this test is to get the best temperature for your filament right? So when i start printing anything just use the best temperature from this test as reference right?? No need to do other test?

    • @RickyImpey
      @RickyImpey  Рік тому +1

      In theory, you would do a temperature tower for each filament to find the best temperature to use for that particular type and even brand. In reality, the same types of filament will be very similar to each other so you can try a print to see how it performs if you don't want to do a temperature tower. I rarely do them myself and instead, will watch a print with new filament and adjust the temperature on the fly to dial it in.

    Anyone else who "figured out" this trivial approach after seeing the first temp tower and was hoping for a lazy one? :-D
    I was hoping cura would have some means of encoding temperatures within the model directly, (kind of STL metadata) so that the plugin would provide the temperature information with the layers. Would have been very nice to do this with two clicks instead.

    • @TheDutchArmorer
      @TheDutchArmorer Рік тому

      220 with base 41 layers, height 41
      215 = 42 layers, height 83
      210 = 41 layers, height 124
      205 = 42 layers, height 166 should be 165
      200 = 42 layers, height 208 should be 206
      After this it goes on but, at 195 the whole bridge is printed in the wrong temp. So this is a bad temp tower.

    Interesting video Ricky. For some reason my version of 5.1 does not have the calibration shapes plugin or anything like it. I've downloaded a temp tower from Thingiverse and I'm using the ChangeatZ 5.3.0(Experimental) plugin. It's more complicated because you have to hand-crank the actual temperature at the specific Z height. It's not as elegant (easy) as your process but I'm hoping it works.
