Ok, soo when you're eating these traditional dishes, the secret is to *combine* the elements that are offered within a dish. You don't eat the polenta (in Romanian it's called mămăligă) separately - bc it's a very mild food item, substituting bread. By combining it with the meat & cabbage of the sarma, it creates the full flavor of the meal.
Also, that was not a green pepper, it was a hot (green) pepper. It is used for *spicing* the food, and was available for the soup as well - you even mentioned that the soup isn't spicy. Romanians do eat spicy food, but when you *want* it - meaning you can use the hot peppers for that, spicing things up to the level you want.

"VATRA" / Hearth, Fireplace, is an old pre-Latin word existing in the Romanian language and in Albanian that comes from an Indo-European word meaning "fire". From this meaning, by surrounding the place where you make the fire with stones, it acquired the meaning of "the place where you make the fire", after which many other meanings were developed depending on people's observations and the old expressions used:
    - to return to the "vatra"/ to return home,
    - (soldiers) left at the "vatra", released from military service/ leave it at home,
    - the "vatra" of the house / the perimeter of the house,
    - the "vatra" of the village / the perimeter of the village,
    - to not have (even) ashes in the "vatra" / to be (extremly) poor,
    - to take the ashes from (someone's) "vatra" / to take everything from the house,
    - oven, furnace,
    - to sit on the "vatra"/ to be lazy,
    - (about girls) to grow old in "vatra" /to remain an unmarried women, etc
In order to understand why the name "Vatra" is given to some traditional restaurants, we have to think that in the old days, every house had a "vatra" and people felt best at home, next to their "vatra"/hearth. So, going to "Vatra" is like going home and you are treated and you feel at home.

Sarmale is made different on each regions of this country! So, if you come to Moldova region you will find another type of sarmale, and another types of food. Even from the same region but from different locations you will find some different tastes for the same name of meal! So if you want real Romanian food, you will find on the local peasant/farmers, not on restaurants. Polenta is not a side dish. Is complementary to your main dish(in your case, sarmale). It is not intended to be eaten alone. One bite of polenta, one of your main dish. Also try local drinks(palinca, tuica, visinata, afinata, rachiu)

Mamaliga (that corn porridge you had with sarmale) is basically a bread replacement. It is quicker to make than bread, so the romanian peasantry (and I would say the eastern-european peasantry) uses it as an easy-to-make filler. While it can be considered "traditional food" (especially alongside sarmale), I think every culture has an easy-to-make filler made of some type of wheat, be it mashed corn or rice or whatever else.

Our lanq is a romance ( latin lanq ) like italian/spanish etc. We have balkanic food & we are take some from thinks from balkanic countrys because we are a latin country sorowned by balkanic countrys ..we have some dishes & some words from slavic countrys but we come from the Roman Impire ...our country was formed and rulled by kings untill we where force to implement comunism , in 1989 my country made a revolution to banned comunism & became a democratic country ❤. My english in whriting is not grate so sorry about that but i hope you understand ❤. We are latin & our romanians invented planes, fountain pens, insulin, street lights etc so manny inventions my romanians have . We where a country that struglle a lot ( two world wars , revolutions etc) so much struglle & i am proud to be a strong romanian women❤. Do not mess with a mother in Romania 😂😂😂😂😂( joke , more or less) for her kids she will be a lioness😂😂😂

Davud, VATRA can be translated something like "hearth"... They use it in a symbolic approach here: once built, the house takes in its role and family with the first fire in the hearth. In traditional Romanian villages, the hearth is the symbol of the Romanian house, the symbol of tradition, of love and steadiness. So, in the restaurant's name context, something having the meaning of old Romanian fundamental traditions (namely as ambiance, cuisine, etc)

Sarma is singular, sarmale is plural. Of course, you can wrap them in cabbage leaves, vine leaves, beetroot leaves, can make them with meat, or with mushrooms, or some other mixture of vegetables. About tea, as we do not grow tea, we are not big tea drinkers, we drink more tissane, like dried fruits tea, or linden flowers tea, or chamomile tea, but we also love our coffee.

    1. We close the streets in the middle of Bucharest every weekend from spring to autumn so we can walk there without cars.
    2. We are only in "Air Schengen" because countries in EU consider us and Bulgaria as 3rd world and find stupid reason to deny our entry. Usually after a bit of time in EU you are allowed to enter Schengen, but it took us 17 years for airports only, so it might take a while.

:D welcome to romania ....First of all, you went to a fancy restaurant...an expensive one due to its location rather than its menu, and you paid more than double what it should have cost. Secondly, sarmale (cabbage rolls) are eaten with polenta and sour cream to balance the taste and the acidity of the pickled cabbage. If you had said something, I would have taken you somewhere with truly authentic Romanian food, very high quality, and not as expensive...so sory for your money, hope for you to have a good time here ...talk to people, they will be happy to communicate with you and help you in certain situations. Romanians are very welcoming.
