Mr. Bill Withers 'Still Bill' RIP Brother! God bless your wife and children. Thank you for all the great songs that live on and sharing your life with us!
I was 11yrs old-ish, living in D.C. when I got my 1st Bill Wither’s Lp & it’s been 30yrs since then and he is still Just So Mesmerising! What a gift to live in a time when So much incredible music is at ones fingertips!! peace, R
Bill Withers is crazy incredible. For this to be posted in January of 2009 and only 27,179 hits tells me something..........lots of people are missing out, in not knowing Bill Withers.
i kept having 2 hear this song constantly, but the only part i cud hear clearly wz the chorus (on my mind) and i kept searching by that title n getting nowhere n no1 knew hu sang it, but i had a feeling it wz bill withers. im so glad i finally found this song. thanks 4 uploading n posting it :-).
Have been searching for this song for years but I just couldn't figure out how to find it. I clearly knew it was bill withers but when i bought all of his albums the song was never on them. Luckly my new phone had this music finding software called shazam. I scaned the song and it told me it was the (Crusaders) who i never heard of. Thank you for uploading. Thank god for you-tube or else all of this stuff would of been forgotten.
R.I.P. the man that printed not a shadow but a big light in my soul specially with this "Soul shadow" song witch I steel have in my phone and play almost every second day.
i imagine someone's already told you this by now, but the Crusaders are the band who perform the instrumentation on this song, it's a collab which both of them claim :)
saw the crusaders last week at the berks jazz fest they told some great stories about their music if anyone gets a chance you should see these old greats Still Bill or the Crusaders
Every song this brilliant artist does is just... je ne sais quoi !! But Soul Shadow (s) is transcendant! "riding with Fats Waller on the super chi, He said music's real, the rest is scenery " Sure you right! Peace, R
Crusaders were a great, great band. Almost anyone can lend a vocal to a perfectly arranged and composed song by a band of that caliber like the singer Randy Crawford also did for The Crusaders, a year or two before Bill Withers, with also a song of Joe Sample's called the "Street Life" but with a much bigger commercial success than this. Actress Bette Middler also sang Joe Sample's "When your life was low" on her solo album, etc.. The missing part in this version is also a very fine and memorable bass solo at the end of the song by a legendary studio musician, Abraham Laboriel. So, with all due respect, this is not Bill Withers credit. He just sings the song and sells it. The guy who played the both solo parts (bass and vocal) live with the Crusaders is called Larry Graham and is a great bass revolutionary visionaire and an innovator of new techniques. The song is again covered with Joe and a Swedish Funk & R&B trombonist named Nils Landgren and it all worked fine. Bill Withers will not be forgotten for all that he has done and that is a lot but this is the time to celebrate the very great late Joe Sample an an outstanding and longstanding band of endurance, friendship, collaboration, taste, socializing, realism, etc. where Joe meets Wilton meets Stix meets Larry meets Pops and all other friends of honor like Alphonso, Abraham, Bill, Randy, to name a few. Cheers to mister Street Life Sample!
The Crusaders are actually such an influential band that one woman and her band made their legendary carrier just by completely copying, rather than stealing or politely said, borrowing the complete life and sound formula of these cats here. That girl was Sade Adu. Also in the fusion jazz world a band that borrowed their complete outfit and idea and I didn't see no thank you's so far, is a very successful band called Spyro Gyra. The Crusaders didn't invent a Brass or Sax leading type of orchestral formation in general but they did it first as a Jazz Funky Soul ensemble with a success and quality, endurance and wisdom on which all those other people relied on an succeeded also for going in the same way. Thank you Joe! We love you here in our hearts and souls you have touched with your music! R.I.P
Thanx man! I am a musician and a walking history of Music. I dare to say I had the utmost opportunity to be born blessed in the family of musicians with over 4000 Lp records so I suffer from the Obelix sindrom and I am the Real Music Revolutionary of Today born out of a deep love with the history of music, so when I change something or when I say something else is better, it has a good reason! Check out my channel but look especially for the playlists. You will be surprised. I play 14 instruments and am a Violin professor and a composer! Welcome! :) Listen to the whole playlists they are considered as albums. Cheers!
Rei Mass I think bill withers rocks this, the background also kick it.you need to recommend some crusaders songs I heard some not as tight as this song.
I prefer the 1975. Chain Reaction Album as an example of great band arrangements and "chamber musicianship" and the two Albums of late night themes, equally great, Street Life 1979. and Rhapsody & Blues 1980. You will find your favorite tunes over there but their whole point is laid back and loosen up so if you want a tight funk band listen to Tower Of Power "Back To Oakland" or "In The Slot" or George Duke's albums from between 1976. - 1980., those were pretty tight bands and uplifting. Tight version of Crusaders were Spyro Gyra. Album "Catching The Sun" from1980. is a nice one. But if you thought of tight like hit records then this is the only one along with "Street Life" that is their vocal hit. Very charming and pleasant is their 1976, "Keep That Same Old Feeling" from the album "Those Southern Knights". They are not about ambition and competition but rather about enjoying and celebrating in company of other musicians, nice and easy, that is a message for which you love that band. They are not "tight" in that way, at all.
@Tampa0123456789 omg i just clicked on this song just to listen to bill and once the chorus kicked in im like HEY I KNOW THIS SONG!! im 21 yrs old btw. :P great song.
No body can't never ever take his place

first four bars from Chega de Saudade
Feeling smooth and soulful, first get blasted by an obnoxiously loud Zip-Loc commercial. We've got our priorities straight these days, am I right?!
Totally agree! Before I could listen I had to get 'Trumped' .......
