Yeah, OP was just pointing out the coolness that while, at the time the Curator’s words clearly meant one thing, now that this has happened we can apply a whole new meaning in retrospect that was never intended at the time, but that makes it even cooler! I think it’s a great thing to point out!

I knew he was going to make a comment about the teeth because he does the same licking motion around the front of his teeth like he did before that comment as 10.

Technically 11 regenerated outside and blew up The Daleks, then the final stage in The TARDIS only took a second with no energy burst to destroy the place. It still ended up crashing obviously but not due to the regeneration.

@@obiwankenobi687 You can see the beams from regeneration energy from 12's regeneration shoot out and hit the walls of the TARDIS, sparks fly and once it's all over the interior is pretty smokey from the blasts. Overall it's clear the regeneration had damaged the TARDIS, not enough to blow it up and send it crashing, but just ready to with one misstep, which happens once she presses a button on the console.
Officially the doctor forced one of his regenerations to be the David tenant face so this is the third time with the same face. I think the doctor has a preferred face
David Tennant's baffled reaction to the whole thing is legitimately hilarious. It is kinda cool to me to see the Doctor regenerate into an appearance we've seen before, especially as the possibility was already teased in the past with the Curator. I also appreciated Whittaker's reaction. Unlike, say, Tennant or Smith, who were both very reluctant, she seems very accepting of the inevitability of it, and totally okay with it. Also, the entire imagery of the scene is visually absolutely stunning.
This comment reminds me of how when 13 is in shot, the background is yellow (her colour/regeneration colour) but when 14 is in shot it turns more blue (14’s colour)
@@mikebasil4832 Not the first time, the second time. All the way back in The Power of the Daleks, the Doctor's clothes changed when the First Doctor regenerated into the Second Doctor. Granted, the cloak and ring didn't change, but the rest of his clothing did.
Don’t remind me of the David Tennant’s farewell parade of death, it was bad enough 10 was one of the shortest incarnations only being around for 6 years, and then acting like an emo child because he’s gonna change form. It’s not like he hadn’t been through it 11 times previously. The meta, nuance, even the clunky fanfare execution gives a look into how things were in 2010 and adds to the scene in that sense. Ofc they wouldn't do that with Tom Baker too it was the early 80s. I just think looking at the time period and events going on for any production and how that influences it is a neat factor

Well no, it was Tom Baker as the doctor saying it, it was a shout out to his portrayal as the doctor, a self pat on the back (well earned) as he is commonly referred to as the best doctor and usually tops the polls as the most favoured doctor. This is simply because they screwed up so bad they had to do something to try get the viewers back. Don't try and give them any rope on this one.

@@tatkkyo9911 I;m on a rewatch of Capaldi's era and am absolutely shocked by how bad the writing is in his first season - I'd forgotten. His talent is the only thing that gets him beyond the horrible scripts and makes those episodes at all watchable. Moffat used crappy writing to get what he was going for - making Clara the main character of the show.

When David Tennant regenerates again he's gonna simply say something like 'im ready' as like a callback to when he said 'i don't wanna go' and it's just gonna make me cry, no way it won't
Kudos to the editor for switching around the last part of Jodie's farewell monologue. The original filming script has her final line as "I wanna know what happens next." Jodie's delivery was sad and disappointed. It was so much more effective to instead end with her cheeky and confident "Tag, you're it!" According to the Internet, I might be the only person that genuinely enjoyed her stories and overall run as the Doctor. Her series gave me a boost and provided much-needed escapism through a very difficult chapter in my life. I've been a fan for most of my 50 years and had a great time with this era. I'll always be grateful for that.
David Tennant smashes the record for the most regeneration scenes in Dr Who, from Eccleston, from and to himself (creating the Metacrises Dr in the process), to Smith and from Whittaker.

@@atheist101 I'm not a fan of Tom Baker. For one thing, the man is a massive egotist. For another, he isn't really an actor because he was, by his own admission, just playing Tom Baker and despite being nearly 90 years old he's barely done anything of note outside of Doctor Who. However, despite my personal apathy towards Tom Baker, even I was pleased to see him. I know how much the fanbase as a whole admires him and although I don't personally share that admiration - I actually admire Colin Baker far more, both as an actor and as a person - I knew I was watching a monumental moment in Doctor Who history.
@Tom Norton for me him actually acting or not has nothing to do with why I like him. He is very egotistical but his quirkiness is something I think fits the Doctor very well. For me it was like the role was made for him. My second favorite, and it's a very close second, is Jon Pertwee. He was quirky as well but in a more controlled manner.
The best regeneration effect of the series, especially in the lead-up where you can see the cracks start to form on her face. Also, she finally decided to give the TARDIS a break and regenerate outside for once!
I was confused on this, isn't the reason the doctors regenerate inside the Tardis because the amount of energy they release serves a purpose for the Tardis?

I just thought that the safest place that the Doctor can regenerate is in the TARDIS since it can probably help in their recovery, has a zero room etc. But the Doctor hasn't been doing it any favours by blowing it up for the past few regenerations 😂
@@ClingToFilm They were also _holding back_ on at least a few of them, especially Ten. His was so explosive the TARDIS literally had to "regenerate" her own self after that. Eleven had the decency to do his Regeneration Cycle Reboot _outdoors,_ and the final actual change was a quick-flash to Twelve, who had the usual regeneration trauma ("Everybody, take five!"). I forget if Twelve exploded or not, but considering he's the (by subjective time experienced) longest-lived Doctor by _multiple orders of magnitude_ it wouldn't surprise me if he did.
I want to say that maybe it has something to do with the longer they live as that generation of the Doctor, the more regeneration energy stores up and comes out of them for their cycle. But then unfortunately 10 was not around very long and his regen almost destroyed the TARDIS to the point she had to leave for a bit. But he did also technically regen twice also at the very start with his hand. So maybe that's why? Idk. 9 wasn't around long and his was quick and no damage and even with Rose in the TARDIS. 10 was a massive amount of damage. 11 was enough to destroy a whole Dalek basically StarDestroyer ship. And twelve seemed to confuse the TARDIS so much that she basically tried to reject 13. So he still did a lot of damage as well.

After watching the last few regenerations in sequence, it is cool to see that there's been some consistent growth in the Doctor's attitude towards it. from 10's "I don't wanna go" to 11's sad acceptance of it, then 12 giving a lesson to his future self, and now 13 is more like "alright, bring it on, let me just get to a nice view first"
It was more about each Doctor's personality at that time. 10 had done a lot, quite a lot, and when Ood Sigma warned him of his death he made it a point to run from it and do as much as he could before going back to the Oods. I didn't get the feeling that 11 was sadly accepting, it seemed more like he was happy to have new regenerations, but was also scared of what could be (as we saw in the episode after). 12 wanted to die as he was, but was reoriented by 1 and his own memories, so he resolved to teach his future self (fitting given his teaching in his final series). 13 is a lot more carefree, which is why I love her last words were, "Tag, you're it," the phrase fits 13's playfulness so perfectly. She was still sad, and wanted to see what would happen for herself, but she didn't have reason to be scared.
Makes me think those who were ready to go besides 2 couldn't have return like ten did, you only had them accept their need to regenerate, where as ten and two didn't want to go, but I believe ten wasn't a forced regeneration and two had thirteen regenerations to accept his force fate so ten had the strongest energy to force himself back into the seat until he could accept his fate like the others, hence why he is back.
What amazes me about Tennant is it's been like 10 years since we last saw him as the doctor but every time he comes back it's he looks like he only left yesterday

I love that callback of “I know those teeth.” It shows that it isn’t just the appearance of Ten that’s come back, it’s *all* of him. His first instinct upon regenerating is the exact same as it was all those years ago-check his teeth, for whatever reason. Idk, I just find that so endearing
I don't think david is actually the doctor I think It's nctui gatwa but the celestial toymaker made it so it looks like david tennant and feels like david tennant, however I haven't seen that 1st doctor story so what would I know? It could be the dude with the clowns in the sarah jane episode for all we know.

First of all respect to jodie she done the best with what she had and took on a lot for her being the first female doc i think she done acceptionally well with what was dealt to her, but bringing tennant back will bring a whole fandom back and get things going smoothly again davis just the best 👌
13 may not have had the best stories to run with, but her regeneration was perfect for the character. No whimpering, no whining, just looking at her regeneration as the next adventure. Perfectly in keeping with her portrayal.
Jodie Wittaker brought such an infectious joy and energy to the character that even if you didn’t like the stories she was in, you couldn’t help but smile at times

Maybe her acting (which was terrible in season 11, i didnt recognize any of the doctors characteristics, she was scared by a teethcollecting minor villain... the doctor has faced down the devil himself for christs sake!) and the scripts got better in Season 12 and 13 i wouldnt now. I really didnt want to risk to put money into another season chances are i wouldnt enjoy. With Tennant back i might take the risk.
For those who don't understand how david tennants 10th doctor (even though he isn't technically the 10th here) came back. There is a certain exchange between the Doctor(s) and the Caretaker (possible future doctor) in the 50th anniversary special, where the Caretaker told the Doctor that he might "revisit" a few faces. Well, it looks like he was spot on.
@@simpspin There isn't a final doctor, the doctor can regenerate and infinite amount of times and is unkillable, the doctor has in fact regenerated millions of times just only a dozen or so of those are still memory intact and are considered Doctors
i like how simple and hopeful this regeneration is. no long speech. no overly sad dialogue. just her wishing she could see what comes next. and her not regenerating in the tardis for once in new who is nice.
I'll be honest, I was hoping that she would have a more grandiose or at least memorable regeneration. Although I suppose being the first one to regenerate into a former Doctor is memorable haha. And I wonder if her regenerating outside of the Tardis was so that once Tennant enters the Tardis again, the interior will revert back to what it was like when he was the Doctor.

I love the TARDIS and I'm not hating on past regenerations (except the 'funny' one-liners that come right after, I always hate those when I just want a minute to be sad) but the simple dialogue is perfect for Jodie/13 and the visuals of this are way beyond the usual 'blow up the set' routine, I already know I'll watch this again and again and again over the years. Goodbye, Doctor 💕
One thing i hate about past regenerations is the long mournful speeches. From the Doctors perspective they arent dying, theyre just getting a new body. I much prefer this way of changing.
"Tag, you're it", combined with the setting, music and acting just a perfect regeneration and beautiful end to Jodie's time as The Doctor. And then David Tennant, using the funny first line "New teeth, that's weird" when he was 10; now saying "I know these teeth" as first line. And the three times "What", also a reference to a moment when he was 10... Just gotta love it!
Not just a moment when he was 10, but taken from the first moment a certain "temp from chiswick" appeared in the TARDIS.... a big hint at who was also coming back

Technically this would be the fourth instance of the 10th wouldn’t it. Ten, stolen regen 10 (if you could it separately), human 10 and now the 14th. Would be funny to see three of the instances interact with each other but doubt it’ll happen
It could also be kind of a subconscious choice maybe, a reminder. Like when 12th realizes why he had the face of a Pompeian he met when he was 10th...? (To remind himself of all the people he helps).
I feel like by the end of the specials the character arc will be him accepting that he has to move on, it's meta textual, the fans including myself would love go back to 2008 when David was the Doctor but that's not realistic so the message will be change is healthy and good. I would love it if this time he welcomes the change into Ncuti.
This was such a beautiful shot. For as many issues as I had with Chibnall's run (most often the writing, but other things too), the cinematography was always wonderful. There were multiple shots throughout Series 11-13 that I will always remember, and this was one. Excellent music as well.
It's funny because the doctor isn't actually supposed to explode... he only did it that one time because he had to dispel the time energy or whatever, but ig people liked the visual spectacle so he just kind of started exploding for no reason lol
@@nickname2239 I think for the technology at the time, 9-10 was good. 10-11 was good. 11-12 was ok but then 12-13 it just didnt look great, if that makes sense.
What’s funny is this just confirms that the Doctor will eventually end up as the Curator. The Curator said he would “revist” some of his favorite old faces. This is one of them. Wouldn’t be surprised if eventually Matt Smith returns for a short appearance as a regeneration.
Barring the reveal at the end, this might be the closest we've ever gotten to a classic who regeneration since 9. Also the way she's not scared or upset just a little sad is so so good

The 10th Doctor/ Donna team was my favorite pairing, but it's a toss up between Tennant and Capaldi for best Doctor for me. Capaldi's Doctor avoided the romantic mess with companions that many (all?) of the previous new Doctors had which made the show more enjoyable.
first thing he does after his first adventure I'd picture is go check up on Luke, Martha and Mickey, Allonso, Jack, go on an adventure with River, go have a picnic at Asgard and do everything she listed to ten even if Twelfth, Eleven and Ten had done it already he'd do it better and then he'd go check up with Wilf and pretend the Radiation never got to him to give Wilf Comfort
Anyone else notice an electric sound around 1:08 just as The Doctor’s clothes change? Could be a sign of degeneration or something going wrong with the regeneration. There has never been an electric sound effect used during any of The Doctor’s regenerations.
@@thomasbicknell175 I stand corrected, I forgot about the Seventh Doctor’s regeneration. In fairness, none of the regenerations in the modern series have an electric sound effect. Also, the Seventh Doctor’s regeneration was stalled due to anesthesia so the electricity could be compensating for that.

Can I just say this was absolutely mind boggling in the most bonkers way possible. Tennant's incarnation of the Doctor was phenomenal, and outwardly charismatic he just exudes charm Going to be fantastic to see Tennant coming back rekindling the old chemistry with Donna in the 60th
I actually love her regeneration the most. It was with in her character. The adventurous one, she’s only sad because she doesn’t get to live more adventures, but she’s glad for what she lived in. She’s always cheerful and she got all of her’s companions saved. She let go so the adventure could go on.
Honestly, you summed it up perfectly. Most of the modern Doctor’s (Since Tennant’s 1st Regeneration) have had a sad/speech ending. I am IN NO WAY hating on any of them. I loved Smith’s era and cried like a baby when he left. Ten was amazing as well. All I can say is Russel better deliver. He better bring the water works and give it his all.
@zio dsreo Tennant left when Davies left, Moffat had his own spin on the character with two actors that did a great job. I had hoped that Davies would have cast the woman who played the Ruth doctor to fix Chibnall's mistakes but he chose this...
I think this is, by far, the most beautiful regeneration scene in New Who. The Doctor, standing in sorrowful acceptance on a rocky outcrop, facing the sunset of both the day and herself, welcoming her new self with a playful "Tag, you're it" before burning in a cross of regeneration energy in front of the TARDIS, as a simple chorus plays to her. It's just incredibly beautifully executed.
It’s the most beautiful LOOKING regeneration, but nah, the most beautiful regeneration from a thematic standpoint on New Who IMO comes from the 12th doctor
I didn't watch a ton of 13, but it seems fitting that her last words are, "tag, you're it," and that she's conscientious enough to regenerate in an open area lol
I love how in like 15 seconds he did 3 iconic Tennant things. The teeth thing from the first scene after regeneration, the hand drag across the face before the regeneration and finally the "what" from the titanic episode.
Damn, imagine performing so exceptionally well as the Doctor that you become the Doctor twice. Looking forward to David Tennant's performance as well as the return of Russell T Davis as the showrunner.

IMO: viewership for Doctor Who took a nosedive since Smith (no offense Capladi or Whitaker, you did the best you could with the scripts you were given), so the only way they could bring the audience back is to bring back a recognizable QUALITY head writer and a quality recognizable Doctor.
@@saskruffriders8234 I wouldn't even say the scripts were too much of an issue. They just ran into the same issue the OG Dr's run did. Repetition, episodic, and continually escalating stakes until it just burned out the audience. How many times can the world/universe be saved? I think a great break would have been the War Dr. It would have been very different from what we've gotten accustomed to and kept him central in one event for a season or two.
"I wanna know what happens next" I DO love this line, very simple but it really captures what I think was my favorite part of Whittaker's Doctor, and that was her reckless curiosity. Sure all the Doctors are curious to a fault but that trait was front and center with her, and that wry smile when she found a new mystery always got me ramped up for an episode.
I've always loved that each doctors behavior is sort of explainable by their last life's death, or how they were feeling on deaths door. And Capaldi really was promising to look forward after losing Clara and Bill. Seeing his first life reminded him why he was traveling, and he regenerated into a young and energetic geek who can't not press all the buttons. God, could you imagine her meeting 9? He'd be confused as heck. Like, we just committed genocide, how'd this happen?
Also a great counter to Tennants regeneration where he said "I don't wanna go...". Like Whittaker's Doctor was the opposite in some ways to Tennants and now we get to see the difference between the two for the next season.

I'd like to point out that this is the first regeneration in the whole modern Doctor Who series that has the doctor changing his outfit as a direct effect of the regeneration. Just imagine how much Tennant's doctor must have wanted to come back to even change his clothes.
Bless Jodie, she was fantastic and I look forward to seeing her come back in any future crossovers. Gosh 13 and 11 being chaotic while 12 is frustrated with them would be hilarious to see

My thoughts exactly! I loved dr who from season 1, Chris Eccleston was amazing for a start, David absolutely tops de character en also loved the Matt Smith, brilliant but goofy. But when Capaldi came I just lost interest. Not saying he isn’t a great doctor but just couldn’t get through his series so stopped watching. Now seeing this i started from season 1 and watched everything. My favorites but also the ones that I liked less. Now going strong and just started he Capaldi era to give him the chance to proof me wrong to stop watching. Also curious to Jodi. Never saw even a small piece of scene of hers. Well except her regeneration. Hopefully another amazing David to be watching next year!

I gotta say even though Thirteen had the weakest run of the Doctors, she gave one hell of an exit. "One last sunset" indeed, and I love for the first time The Doctor has a beautiful regeneration instead of a destructive one. And the "wait what?" moment of realizing the leaks of David Tennant in the next season isn't just an appearance and crossover by the Tenth Doctor....it's that he full on gets to be a new Doctor is insane and amazing.

I can’t wait to see more of Tennant, and how his new rendition of the Doctor will go. He was always one of my favorite. 9 was the very serious fellow, but could have fun. He was balanced in that way. 10 was more charismatic and charming than 9, but he also seemed more angry, and definitely more willing to be cruel. 11 was by far the kindest (outside of 13…) and that may be due to Amy and Rory. Clara could also have played a small role too. 12 was an old man. 13… where do I even begin. 14. TENNET!
You know, maybe it's not such a big shock after all: the Curator in The Day of the Doctor was a future version of the Doctor who had regenerated back into the form of the 4th Doctor. He mentioned that in the years to come, the Doctor might find himself revisiting some of his old favorite faces.
Quite possibly the most striking regeneration sequence in terms of cinematography and visual effects. Segun's score for it was also nothing short of perfection in my opinion.
Agreed. I'd always wondered which variation of Thirteen's theme he would go for, expecting something melancholic perhaps but he went with the original which has a sense of grandeur and also coming full circle. Slightly sad it is the last time we will hear it but he did a great job.
David Tennant going into Matt Smith was my first introduction to Doctor Who and watching old Doctor Who episodes of Tennant’s made me fall in love with the character, and seeing him back brought me to tears!

It was a rerun thoughor it might have been on vhs at the time. but I recall it being black and white, and was a interesting but awesome episode. Though most of the episodes I had watched was from the third doctor (Jon Pertwee) onwards from Spearhead from Space I believe, but I do enjoy the new who too.
I'm so glad this is how Jodie's Doctor went out. I was worried it was going to be sad, with some of the Doctor's team dying, along with Jodie possibly regeneration in a sombre fashion. This was perfect. Jodie got to say goodbye to Yaz, all of the companions have a get together, and Jodie regenerates with a smile on her face. It's not sad, but hopeful for the future. First regeneration in Modern Doctor Who that takes place outside the Tardis too.
I thought the regeneration was quite fitting actually. That wide shot of her regenerating on the cliff by herself at sunset I think summarised Jodie's time as the doctor. She was an incarnation desperately trying to understand herself and those around her and although she made friends who became companions, she was never really able to connect with them properly on an emotional level which led to her awkwardness around them and that's why I think it was perfect that she regenerated alone. However, the whole time she knew she was hopefully searching for some kind of meaning and that in the end she would find it. Did she find what she was searching for? Arguably not but I think what she realised about herself in the end was that those questions remain unanswered and her purpose literally is regeneration in pursuit of understanding which will go on and on with subsequent doctors and that's why all she could say in the moment was "Dr. Whoever you're going to be...Tag, you're it!"
Also where she regenerates is durdle door where I've actually been once on a school trip. Ngl if i was the doctor that would be where I'd want to go out.

Matt Smith my third, Peter Capaldi, second and Tom Baker was the Doctor of my 1960's generation Who got me hooked. Each actors regeneration portrayal added extra layers to the character backstory of Doctor Who.
I watched this with tears. My brother passed and everything he told me we tried to make it doctor who theme. We watched every who episode as kids and my brother found it when we turned adults. He'd be so happy now that his favorite doctor is back

Honestly returning to David and bringing back the showrunner is them realizing their mistake with the 13th. They had to do something to bring people back after that god awful Doctor. But can't blame Jodie, like many bad performances, the actor/actress can only do so much when the script says one things and the director says to do it a specific way.
@@hobbitpsi I don't think Jodies performance was ever the issue she embodied the Doctor but still being uniquely her own. I feel the issue was with Chris direction of the character, he'd written some great episodes of NuWho during the RTD & Moffat eras but as Show Runner he floundered. Also Davids only coming back for the 2023 specials because its the 60th not because Jodie wasn't up to the task. I think time will be kind to Jodie, maybe not her era of Doctor Who but her as the Doctor certainly.

It also makes sense that it happened outside. The Doctor finally had the bright idea to step outside for once instead of doing it inside the TARDIS, which would basically destroy the control room and cause it to crash. It basically became a running gag that every time the Doctor regenerated inside the TARDIS in New Who, the TARDIS ended up heavily damaged and/or malfunctioned and crashed, and it was getting a little long in the tooth, if you ask me. It happened in "The Christmas Invasion" (the first Christmas special and David Tennant's first outing as the Doctor), "The End of Time" (David Tennant's last outing as the Doctor until "The Day of the Doctor" and now "The Power of the Doctor"), "The Time of the Doctor" (Matt Smith's last appearance as the Doctor), and "Twice Upon a Time" (Peter Capaldi's last outing as the Doctor). The only way for the TARDIS to crash now is if the 14th Doctor somehow goes nuts and deliberately causes a crash, like the 10th Doctor did in the Children In Need mini episode that takes place between "The Parting of the Ways" and "The Christmas Invasion" special, or forgets how to pilot the TARDIS and accidentally causes the TARDIS to crash.
my dad got me to start watching doctor who YEARS ago. Sadly my dad recently passed away and my mum did a long time ago. David Tennant was my mums and my dads favourite doctor so seeing him again truly makes me smile. I hope they both saw it wherever they are.

Technically 11 regenerated outside and blew up The Daleks, then the final stage in The TARDIS only took a second with no energy burst to destroy the place. It still ended up crashing obviously but not due to the regeneration.

@@obiwankenobi687 You can see the beams from regeneration energy from 12's regeneration shoot out and hit the walls of the TARDIS, sparks fly and once it's all over the interior is pretty smokey from the blasts. Overall it's clear the regeneration had damaged the TARDIS, not enough to blow it up and send it crashing, but just ready to with one misstep, which happens once she presses a button on the console.
The 10th Doctor didn't want to go and his regeneration was heart breaking. This is basically his second chance to "do so much more".
I hope his final words after these last specials is “I’m ready to go now.”

David Tennant's baffled reaction to the whole thing is legitimately hilarious. It is kinda cool to me to see the Doctor regenerate into an appearance we've seen before, especially as the possibility was already teased in the past with the Curator.
I also appreciated Whittaker's reaction. Unlike, say, Tennant or Smith, who were both very reluctant, she seems very accepting of the inevitability of it, and totally okay with it. Also, the entire imagery of the scene is visually absolutely stunning.
I don’t know, I think smith was pretty okay with going, just hoped to be better in his next one.

The meta, nuance, even the clunky fanfare execution gives a look into how things were in 2010 and adds to the scene in that sense. Ofc they wouldn't do that with Tom Baker too it was the early 80s. I just think looking at the time period and events going on for any production and how that influences it is a neat factor

Well no, it was Tom Baker as the doctor saying it, it was a shout out to his portrayal as the doctor, a self pat on the back (well earned) as he is commonly referred to as the best doctor and usually tops the polls as the most favoured doctor. This is simply because they screwed up so bad they had to do something to try get the viewers back. Don't try and give them any rope on this one.

The writing might have been bad for most of 13's run but I do love the "tag, you're it" line, I think it suits Jodie's portrayal very well.
I always felt bad for her and Capaldi cause they played the character well but got handed some of the worst writing in the history of Dr who
@@tatkkyo9911 I;m on a rewatch of Capaldi's era and am absolutely shocked by how bad the writing is in his first season - I'd forgotten. His talent is the only thing that gets him beyond the horrible scripts and makes those episodes at all watchable. Moffat used crappy writing to get what he was going for - making Clara the main character of the show.

Kudos to the editor for switching around the last part of Jodie's farewell monologue. The original filming script has her final line as "I wanna know what happens next." Jodie's delivery was sad and disappointed. It was so much more effective to instead end with her cheeky and confident "Tag, you're it!"
According to the Internet, I might be the only person that genuinely enjoyed her stories and overall run as the Doctor. Her series gave me a boost and provided much-needed escapism through a very difficult chapter in my life. I've been a fan for most of my 50 years and had a great time with this era. I'll always be grateful for that.

@@atheist101 I'm not a fan of Tom Baker. For one thing, the man is a massive egotist. For another, he isn't really an actor because he was, by his own admission, just playing Tom Baker and despite being nearly 90 years old he's barely done anything of note outside of Doctor Who. However, despite my personal apathy towards Tom Baker, even I was pleased to see him. I know how much the fanbase as a whole admires him and although I don't personally share that admiration - I actually admire Colin Baker far more, both as an actor and as a person - I knew I was watching a monumental moment in Doctor Who history.
@Tom Norton for me him actually acting or not has nothing to do with why I like him. He is very egotistical but his quirkiness is something I think fits the Doctor very well. For me it was like the role was made for him. My second favorite, and it's a very close second, is Jon Pertwee. He was quirky as well but in a more controlled manner.

I was confused on this, isn't the reason the doctors regenerate inside the Tardis because the amount of energy they release serves a purpose for the Tardis?

I just thought that the safest place that the Doctor can regenerate is in the TARDIS since it can probably help in their recovery, has a zero room etc. But the Doctor hasn't been doing it any favours by blowing it up for the past few regenerations 😂
@@ClingToFilm They were also _holding back_ on at least a few of them, especially Ten. His was so explosive the TARDIS literally had to "regenerate" her own self after that. Eleven had the decency to do his Regeneration Cycle Reboot _outdoors,_ and the final actual change was a quick-flash to Twelve, who had the usual regeneration trauma ("Everybody, take five!"). I forget if Twelve exploded or not, but considering he's the (by subjective time experienced) longest-lived Doctor by _multiple orders of magnitude_ it wouldn't surprise me if he did.
I want to say that maybe it has something to do with the longer they live as that generation of the Doctor, the more regeneration energy stores up and comes out of them for their cycle. But then unfortunately 10 was not around very long and his regen almost destroyed the TARDIS to the point she had to leave for a bit. But he did also technically regen twice also at the very start with his hand. So maybe that's why? Idk. 9 wasn't around long and his was quick and no damage and even with Rose in the TARDIS. 10 was a massive amount of damage. 11 was enough to destroy a whole Dalek basically StarDestroyer ship. And twelve seemed to confuse the TARDIS so much that she basically tried to reject 13. So he still did a lot of damage as well.

Jodie Whittikar, Like Colin baker, was utterly screwed over, they did not make the most of her as an actress and I was sad to see her go.
After watching the last few regenerations in sequence, it is cool to see that there's been some consistent growth in the Doctor's attitude towards it. from 10's "I don't wanna go" to 11's sad acceptance of it, then 12 giving a lesson to his future self, and now 13 is more like "alright, bring it on, let me just get to a nice view first"

It was more about each Doctor's personality at that time. 10 had done a lot, quite a lot, and when Ood Sigma warned him of his death he made it a point to run from it and do as much as he could before going back to the Oods. I didn't get the feeling that 11 was sadly accepting, it seemed more like he was happy to have new regenerations, but was also scared of what could be (as we saw in the episode after). 12 wanted to die as he was, but was reoriented by 1 and his own memories, so he resolved to teach his future self (fitting given his teaching in his final series). 13 is a lot more carefree, which is why I love her last words were, "Tag, you're it," the phrase fits 13's playfulness so perfectly. She was still sad, and wanted to see what would happen for herself, but she didn't have reason to be scared.

Makes me think those who were ready to go besides 2 couldn't have return like ten did, you only had them accept their need to regenerate, where as ten and two didn't want to go, but I believe ten wasn't a forced regeneration and two had thirteen regenerations to accept his force fate so ten had the strongest energy to force himself back into the seat until he could accept his fate like the others, hence why he is back.
What amazes me about Tennant is it's been like 10 years since we last saw him as the doctor but every time he comes back it's he looks like he only left yesterday

I love that callback of “I know those teeth.” It shows that it isn’t just the appearance of Ten that’s come back, it’s *all* of him. His first instinct upon regenerating is the exact same as it was all those years ago-check his teeth, for whatever reason. Idk, I just find that so endearing

First of all respect to jodie she done the best with what she had and took on a lot for her being the first female doc i think she done acceptionally well with what was dealt to her, but bringing tennant back will bring a whole fandom back and get things going smoothly again davis just the best 👌
13 may not have had the best stories to run with, but her regeneration was perfect for the character. No whimpering, no whining, just looking at her regeneration as the next adventure. Perfectly in keeping with her portrayal.

Maybe her acting (which was terrible in season 11, i didnt recognize any of the doctors characteristics, she was scared by a teethcollecting minor villain... the doctor has faced down the devil himself for christs sake!) and the scripts got better in Season 12 and 13 i wouldnt now. For those who don't understand how david tennants 10th doctor (even though he isn't technically the 10th here) came back. There is a certain exchange between the Doctor(s) and the Caretaker (possible future doctor) in the 50th anniversary special, where the Caretaker told the Doctor that he might "revisit" a few faces. Well, it looks like he was spot on.

i like how simple and hopeful this regeneration is. no long speech. no overly sad dialogue. just her wishing she could see what comes next. and her not regenerating in the tardis for once in new who is nice.
She finally realized she wouldn't have to destroy the TARDIS and crash if she simply stepped outside.
I'll be honest, I was hoping that she would have a more grandiose or at least memorable regeneration. Although I suppose being the first one to regenerate into a former Doctor is memorable haha. And I wonder if her regenerating outside of the Tardis was so that once Tennant enters the Tardis again, the interior will revert back to what it was like when he was the Doctor.

I love the TARDIS and I'm not hating on past regenerations (except the 'funny' one-liners that come right after, I always hate those when I just want a minute to be sad) but the simple dialogue is perfect for Jodie/13 and the visuals of this are way beyond the usual 'blow up the set' routine, I already know I'll watch this again and again and again over the years. Goodbye, Doctor 💕
One thing i hate about past regenerations is the long mournful speeches. From the Doctors perspective they arent dying, theyre just getting a new body. I much prefer this way of changing.
Aside from David returning, I have to say that that was a gorgeous shot and a gorgeous soundtrack.
"Tag, you're it", combined with the setting, music and acting just a perfect regeneration and beautiful end to Jodie's time as The Doctor.
And then David Tennant, using the funny first line "New teeth, that's weird" when he was 10; now saying "I know these teeth" as first line. And the three times "What", also a reference to a moment when he was 10... Just gotta love it!
Not just a moment when he was 10, but taken from the first moment a certain "temp from chiswick" appeared in the TARDIS.... a big hint at who was also coming back

It could also be kind of a subconscious choice maybe, a reminder. Like when 12th realizes why he had the face of a Pompeian he met when he was 10th...? (To remind himself of all the people he helps).
I feel like by the end of the specials the character arc will be him accepting that he has to move on, it's meta textual, the fans including myself would love go back to 2008 when David was the Doctor but that's not realistic so the message will be change is healthy and good. I would love it if this time he welcomes the change into Ncuti.

This was such a beautiful shot. For as many issues as I had with Chibnall's run (most often the writing, but other things too), the cinematography was always wonderful. There were multiple shots throughout Series 11-13 that I will always remember, and this was one. Excellent music as well.

The 10th Doctor/ Donna team was my favorite pairing, but it's a toss up between Tennant and Capaldi for best Doctor for me. Capaldi's Doctor avoided the romantic mess with companions that many (all?) of the previous new Doctors had which made the show more enjoyable.

Anyone else notice an electric sound around 1:08 just as The Doctor’s clothes change? Could be a sign of degeneration or something going wrong with the regeneration. There has never been an electric sound effect used during any of The Doctor’s regenerations.

In fairness, none of the regenerations in the modern series have an electric sound effect. Also, the Seventh Doctor’s regeneration was stalled due to anesthesia so the electricity could be compensating for that.

I actually love her regeneration the most. It was with in her character. The adventurous one, she’s only sad because she doesn’t get to live more adventures, but she’s glad for what she lived in. She’s always cheerful and she got all of her’s companions saved. She let go so the adventure could go on.
Honestly, you summed it up perfectly. Most of the modern Doctor’s (Since Tennant’s 1st Regeneration) have had a sad/speech ending. I am IN NO WAY hating on any of them. I loved Smith’s era and cried like a baby when he left. Ten was amazing as well. All I can say is Russel better deliver. He better bring the water works and give it his all.

I think this is, by far, the most beautiful regeneration scene in New Who. The Doctor, standing in sorrowful acceptance on a rocky outcrop, facing the sunset of both the day and herself, welcoming her new self with a playful "Tag, you're it" before burning in a cross of regeneration energy in front of the TARDIS, as a simple chorus plays to her. It's just incredibly beautifully executed.

@@saskruffriders8234 I wouldn't even say the scripts were too much of an issue. They just ran into the same issue the OG Dr's run did. Repetition, episodic, and continually escalating stakes until it just burned out the audience. How many times can the world/universe be saved? I think a great break would have been the War Dr. It would have been very different from what we've gotten accustomed to and kept him central in one event for a season or two.
"I wanna know what happens next" I DO love this line, very simple but it really captures what I think was my favorite part of Whittaker's Doctor, and that was her reckless curiosity. Sure all the Doctors are curious to a fault but that trait was front and center with her, and that wry smile when she found a new mystery always got me ramped up for an episode.
I've always loved that each doctors behavior is sort of explainable by their last life's death, or how they were feeling on deaths door. And Capaldi really was promising to look forward after losing Clara and Bill. Seeing his first life reminded him why he was traveling, and he regenerated into a young and energetic geek who can't not press all the buttons.
God, could you imagine her meeting 9? He'd be confused as heck. Like, we just committed genocide, how'd this happen?
Also a great counter to Tennants regeneration where he said "I don't wanna go...". Like Whittaker's Doctor was the opposite in some ways to Tennants and now we get to see the difference between the two for the next season.

I'd like to point out that this is the first regeneration in the whole modern Doctor Who series that has the doctor changing his outfit as a direct effect of the regeneration. Just imagine how much Tennant's doctor must have wanted to come back to even change his clothes.

love David Tenant...I rewatched many of his episodes multiple times...Probably the best incarnation of Doctor in the modern era.
Capaldi is probably my favorite, particularly the grumpy college professor phase.

My thoughts exactly! I loved dr who from season 1, Chris Eccleston was amazing for a start, David absolutely tops de character en also loved the Matt Smith, brilliant but goofy. But when Capaldi came I just lost interest. Not saying he isn’t a great doctor but just couldn’t get through his series so stopped watching.
Now seeing this i started from season 1 and watched everything. My favorites but also the ones that I liked less.
Now going strong and just started he Capaldi era to give him the chance to proof me wrong to stop watching. Also curious to Jodi. Never saw even a small piece of scene of hers. Well except her regeneration.
Hopefully another amazing David to be watching next year!

I gotta say even though Thirteen had the weakest run of the Doctors, she gave one hell of an exit. "One last sunset" indeed, and I love for the first time The Doctor has a beautiful regeneration instead of a destructive one.
And the "wait what?" moment of realizing the leaks of David Tennant in the next season isn't just an appearance and crossover by the Tenth Doctor....it's that he full on gets to be a new Doctor is insane and amazing.
Seeing her go was beautiful.
Now we need a crossover for 10 & 14.

Jodie was not a bad actor. The writing wasn't great for her time, but she did her part well.
na she was pretty dreadful, no stage prescence or delivery, awful cringey mannerisms, constantly looked out of place and utterly lost like she accidentally wandered out from a tour group. Jo Martin would have owned the role a lot more. Overall the worst or 2nd worst doctor of them all.

I can’t wait to see more of Tennant, and how his new rendition of the Doctor will go. He was always one of my favorite.
9 was the very serious fellow, but could have fun. He was balanced in that way.
10 was more charismatic and charming than 9, but he also seemed more angry, and definitely more willing to be cruel.
11 was by far the kindest (outside of 13…) and that may be due to Amy and Rory. Clara could also have played a small role too.
12 was an old man.

You know, maybe it's not such a big shock after all: the Curator in The Day of the Doctor was a future version of the Doctor who had regenerated back into the form of the 4th Doctor. He mentioned that in the years to come, the Doctor might find himself revisiting some of his old favorite faces.

Quite possibly the most striking regeneration sequence in terms of cinematography and visual effects. Segun's score for it was also nothing short of perfection in my opinion.
Agreed. I'd always wondered which variation of Thirteen's theme he would go for, expecting something melancholic perhaps but he went with the original which has a sense of grandeur and also coming full circle. Slightly sad it is the last time we will hear it but he did a great job.

David Tennant going into Matt Smith was my first introduction to Doctor Who and watching old Doctor Who episodes of Tennant’s made me fall in love with the character, and seeing him back brought me to tears!

It was a rerun thoughor it might have been on vhs at the time. but I recall it being black and white, and was a interesting but awesome episode. Though most of the episodes I had watched was from the third doctor (Jon Pertwee) onwards from Spearhead from Space I believe, but I do enjoy the new who too.

I'm so glad this is how Jodie's Doctor went out. I was worried it was going to be sad, with some of the Doctor's team dying, along with Jodie possibly regeneration in a sombre fashion.
This was perfect. Jodie got to say goodbye to Yaz, all of the companions have a get together, and Jodie regenerates with a smile on her face. It's not sad, but hopeful for the future.

Yeah, her Doctor was always about hope. I'm glad they stuck with that for the regeneration. It makes a nice change, if nothing else.

I thought the regeneration was quite fitting actually. That wide shot of her regenerating on the cliff by herself at sunset I think summarised Jodie's time as the doctor. She was an incarnation desperately trying to understand herself and those around her and although she made friends who became companions, she was never really able to connect with them properly on an emotional level which led to her awkwardness around them and that's why I think it was perfect that she regenerated alone. However, the whole time she knew she was hopefully searching for some kind of meaning and that in the end she would find it. Did she find what she was searching for? Arguably not but I think what she realised about herself in the end was that those questions remain unanswered and her purpose literally is regeneration in pursuit of understanding which will go on and on with subsequent doctors and that's why all she could say in the moment was "Dr. Whoever you're going to be...Tag, you're it!"

I mean it's why half the time the Doctor crashes the Tardis immediately after regenerating

David Tennant is my favorite and captured my heart. Matt Smith my third, Peter Capaldi, second and Tom Baker was the Doctor of my 1960's generation Who got me hooked. Each actors regeneration portrayal added extra layers to the character backstory of Doctor Who.
I watched this with tears. My brother passed and everything he told me we tried to make it doctor who theme. We watched every who episode as kids and my brother found it when we turned adults. He'd be so happy now that his favorite doctor is back

Honestly returning to David and bringing back the showrunner is them realizing their mistake with the 13th. They had to do something to bring people back after that god awful Doctor. But can't blame Jodie, like many bad performances, the actor/actress can only do so much when the script says one things and the director says to do it a specific way.
@@hobbitpsi I don't think Jodies performance was ever the issue she embodied the Doctor but still being uniquely her own. I feel the issue was with Chris direction of the character, he'd written some great episodes of NuWho during the RTD & Moffat eras but as Show Runner he floundered.
Also Davids only coming back for the 2023 specials because its the 60th not because Jodie wasn't up to the task. I think time will be kind to Jodie, maybe not her era of Doctor Who but her as the Doctor certainly.

It also makes sense that it happened outside. The Doctor finally had the bright idea to step outside for once instead of doing it inside the TARDIS, which would basically destroy the control room and cause it to crash. It basically became a running gag that every time the Doctor regenerated inside the TARDIS in New Who, the TARDIS ended up heavily damaged and/or malfunctioned and crashed, and it was getting a little long in the tooth, if you ask me.
It happened in "The Christmas Invasion" (the first Christmas special and David Tennant's first outing as the Doctor), "The End of Time" (David Tennant's last outing as the Doctor until "The Day of the Doctor" and now "The Power of the Doctor"), "The Time of the Doctor" (Matt Smith's last appearance as the Doctor), and "Twice Upon a Time" (Peter Capaldi's last outing as the Doctor).
The only way for the TARDIS to crash now is if the 14th Doctor somehow goes nuts and deliberately causes a crash, like the 10th Doctor did in the Children In Need mini episode that takes place between "The Parting of the Ways" and "The Christmas Invasion" special, or forgets how to pilot the TARDIS and accidentally causes the TARDIS to crash.

my dad got me to start watching doctor who YEARS ago. Sadly my dad recently passed away and my mum did a long time ago. David Tennant was my mums and my dads favourite doctor so seeing him again truly makes me smile. I hope they both saw it wherever they are.
