I can finally see the great, and largely forgotten, Joe Turner (Piano Man) not to be confused with Big Joe Turner, the blues singer. What a fine stride pianist he was.
Great Caeser's Ghost (as Perry White used to say) !! The terrific Mr Turner played one mean keyboard ! Love it ! Was not all that familiar with him till now !! Great version of one of my all time favorite jazz classics ! Thank you very much for uploading for us to enjoy ! Talk about a bodacious "blast from the past" !! CHEERS !! :-)
Fantastic to be able to see Joe Turner doing his thing. I only recently discovered him and there aren't many recordings available but I recently found one online - a CD called Joe's Back in Town - it is wonderful, and very highly recommended I've listened to it about fifty times this month!
this was quite probably at Calavados restaurant and night club open all night, located 40 avenue Pierre Ier de Serbie in Paris. A funny anecdote : I was in Paris with a Hungarian friend (and fabulous pianist ), Kalman Drafi, in 1986, and we went to the Calavados, a tavern with a grand piano on Avenue Pierre Ier de Serbie, where Joe Turner, a typical New-York jazzman, had been playing jazz music almost every night since 1962. At some point Joe Turner took a break and we joined him for a drink. We asked him how long he had been playing there and he said : "about 25 years, because unlike in NY, they never laid me off" And at the end of our talk, suddenly and stunningly indeed, he, the typical high level NY jazzman, started to speak .... Hungarian !!! He explained : at the beginning of his career, he had spent several months in Budapest, Hungary... Who would know this today ? well of course he knew, as well as now every reader of this comment.
@dnettles Thanks for pointing out that there are two different Joe Turner's! I never knew and it never ceases to amaze all the things I learn about music from UA-cam! This Joe Turners style of playing is beautiful!
@@fabianbeltranMC you’re not allowed to rip people off in Jazz. Watch the Andre Previn and Oscar Peterson interview. Oscar Peterson calls out people who play transcriptions instead of true improvisations

Piano sounds very good! JT forever!
Simply good.
É craque no estilo, Expert. maneco - Brasil.
What a master!
Beautiful
magnificent piano man !!!👍👍👍
Sublime Joe
Yes he's been playing at La Calavados night club in Paris til his death
so good!
Good!! Piano Turner!!
ça me ramène 40 ans en arrière à "la calavados"
Son blue's est pur. Quel pianiste d'exception.
That is one lucky cigar!
I see an inspiration of Art Tatum in his playing
Yes!!!
Tatum used the same idea at 1:58.
Yeah! Crazy to hear the original quotes that he used
That's at 2:10 in Art Tatum's Tatum Pole Boogie Live 1949. I can't get the rhythm out of my head now
He's also quoting Earl Hines' version at 1:29
@eruptionista Yep, thats exactly how I would feel too!
This isn't Joe Turner. It's W.C Handy
Don't know if you are kidding or not, but just in case....Handy was a trumpeter, as well as a composer. It certainly is his song, though.
70% rip-off of tatum's version. Not sure if I like this or not.
XplusX12345678 this is jazz. you’re allowed to do that
Joe was 2 years older than Art, so it's perhaps reverse?
