POTUS should release their tax returns to the public by law instead of tradition; just like presidental term limits Maybe this will indeed change how a president's tax return is handled.
Trump is the only US president in history to not publish his tax returns. Judt because it may not be necesssry by law for the president to publish tax returns, doing so shows transparency. The fact that Trump didn't (even though it was not illegal not to do so) showed he had something to hide to deny which proves Trump was not transparent.

What this tells me is that you think the average businessman believes that inherited wealth, 3 failed casinos and multiple bankruptcies are a more reliable marker of business acumen than a record of enduring profitability WITHOUT that record of failure.
Donald trump is the only politician in office that I have seen lose money ask Nancy Pelosi if she lost any money while being in the house she didn't in fact she became 100 million richer
Why do we act like all these other rich people dont do the same. How about we make every millionaire release their tax returns and we prosecute them. Oh yeah we wont cause those are the ones running the country and dont want to give that up.
It’s not about “all these other rich people,” it’s about a former President. I believe other former Presidents have voluntarily released their tax returns. He also lied and said he would, only to fight tooth and nail not to; he lied and said he was being audited. The lying only made him seem more suspicious and eager to conceal something other Presidents have been forthcoming about. He also insulted many peoples’ intelligence by saying we wouldn’t understand such a long and involved tax return, as if he’s the only one who has complicated tax returns. If he had simply released it, it would’ve been more transparent.
I disagree that it won't change anything for Trump. The returns are also now available for criminal case review and may find evidence of both tax related and non-tax related crimes.
Besides the potential gift tax (if the loan wasn’t repaid) I don’t see an issue with the info presented here. You’ll have an easier time penalizing him for state filings than FED; credits and carryforwards are not tax evasion lol.
The audit is not over but there are a couple of smoking guns so who knows if and what they’ll find. The theory is he systematically underwrote his profits to the IRS to minimize payable taxes and at the same time overvalued his assets to get better loan deals from banks. If this turns out to be true it is clearly fraud. Moreover, his tax returns do not really bear out his claims of being a billionaire. This guy was bragging to be worth 10 billion but is losing 10s of millions each year and relies of donations to finance his campaigns and his personal legal battles.
It showed nothing worth the tax payers $$$$$$$$ spent in the courts and on lawyers and hooks! Another failed attempt to persecute him, another waste of time and resources!!!
I don't know if they screwed up, but they ARE seriously under funded and using ancient computer technology, and the brain drain in the federal government is seriously bad. I think brain drain and not paying decent wages are two of the biggest issues facing the government; at all levels.
Not a fan of Trump but what's the hoopla about his taxes. He paid his lawyers and accountants to use the tax loopholes put in place by Congress for anyone who have the means to pay the minimum tax possible. End of story, don't hate the player hate the game. This will change nothing because those with means/money stay rich/wealthy by benefitting from these loopholes. This is American politics at its best.
If he makes 10 times the amount I make, then he should pay 10 times the amount of taxes I pay. Hopefully these tax returns will prove that once and for all. If he doesn't pay as much taxes as normal, hard working Americans I'm going to be fighting mad though!
Umm, there is are a couple of books out about how the wealthy avoid paying taxes, legally. You should read them. The tax reform bill that was passed while Trump was president was lambasted by Warren Buffet and former president Obama, not of any value to middle income or poor people. Obama specifically said that he would end up being taxed at a 12% tax rate, while a person making $20k would be taxed at a 20% rate. On more than one occasion Mr. Buffet has said it is his secretary's fault for not being able to take advantage of tax loopholes. The IRS is right now being sued because a reporter got their tax info and showed that they paid their taxes but Jeff Bezos paid zero in income tax, because he did not get paid to work. Essentially Jeff Bezos ran a multi billion dollar company for free and earned no money. If you don't get paid, you will not have to pay taxes either. While it is not fair, it is the law.
That’s not how the tax code works, so get mad at yourself for being ignorant. Passive income isn’t taxed like earned income and business income isn’t either. Business have business expenses which are tax deductions because without these expenses the business couldn’t operate.
It's not so much about it being illegal. It's about it being more if his lies. He said he would release them during the first election then never did. He lied about how rich he is. All this is about us proving how his supporters don't care they got duped and will continue to support him no matter what.

POTUS should release their tax returns to the public by law instead of tradition; just like presidental term limits
Maybe this will indeed change how a president's tax return is handled.
Term limits are because of FDR. There is no law that says returns must be made public.
Like term limits, this would require a constitutional amendment.

By law, no but if he had paid the right amount of income tax (which would hsve been significsntly more than $750 for 2015/2016) to the treasury he would have published his tax returns in public.

What this tells me is DT has some really good accountants and tax attorneys who help him reduce his tax liability.

Seeing how the rich pay most of the taxes your whining is just sad.
He donated his salary for 4 years does that count?
Not if he spends or loses 10 times what we make ❤
