  • Prince August releases 3 more 40mm scale moulds in June 2018. These are Austrian Cuirassier moulds. One mould is the horse and the other two are the rider moulds allowing you to cast an officer, trumpeter, trooper and flagbearer. This is a guide on how to cast these properly. We are using our solder melting pot instead of a hotplate. The metal used is Model Metal, an alloy of lead, tin and bismuth.
The range is constantly expanding and there are already Prussian, Austrian, Austrian-Hungarian and Russian soldiers as well as Artillery.

I have been pouring and painting Prince August figures for over twenty years. Hundreds of them, with wonderful results. Added some newer chess set molds a few years ago. Both new and older molds still producing excellent results.

@6:13 I like to use a 2-part epoxy glue for this. As well as providing good adhesion, it can fill any gaps.
I'll leave the rider off till I've painted both horse and rider, too. I can get at all the areas more easily. That's just a preference, though.

wish they would update the range to 28mm like most and re-mould all the modals with more detail, Prince August is unfortunately lagging behind i would buy all the re-moulds if they updated as i like metal miniatures very much just not in their current state

Thanks for the comment. There are problems with casting a lot of small details with moulds. Generally the smaller the figure the less details that are going to be added. It depends on the details of course but there is a huge difference between casting figures ourselves and expecting customers to cast them at home with gravity casts and a varied metal alloy choice. While scaling the range to 28mm would be possible on the design side, the casting element is trickier to work with. We have done 28mm and 25mm but they have to have larger and larger ingates to get them to fill. The more details added the more risk of failure when casting them.

@@princeaugustcasting thanks for the reply, i think if you are making 28mm mould that should help a bit with detail issues but i do understand, Centrifugal Rubber Mould Casting is a little expensive😅

Hello my teacher. In the molds I use, molten lead does not fill the endpoints. what is the solution to this? What can I add to make the lead more fluid? thanks.

Pure lead takes a lot of heat to get it to flow successfully. Most cookers cannot achieve that temperature. You could add Tin to the mix (50/50) to improve the result, plus make it safer to handle. I advise getting a solder pot to get the temperature up to about 390 to 400 C . If you are still struggling then you need to vent the mould (cut a hairline channel from the end of the difficult spot upwards towards the outside of the mould. We have a video on this procedure on this channel.

You cannot make your own vulcanised rubber moulds without a huge press. All moulds are premade by us. We do offer a custom service however if desired, but you need to email us with details so we can judge suitability. Information is on our website on the custom mould service.

I am not sure exactly what you wish to know. Do you mean is it easier to paint if unassembled? If so, then no as the figure needs to be primed and it is more work to mask off the parts to be glued than have them assembled first. You do not want to paint the parts to be glued as you are then gluing the paint rather than the metal, resulting in (a) making the adhesion less reliable and (b) risking making the parts not fit as the glue adds a layer that thickens the pole so it might not fit in the body. Of course if you take enough precautions you could work around this with masks, but it is more work.

@@princeaugustcasting Nice video - very clearly demonstrated.I'm intrigued though: from what material is the mold made from ,and from what material is the original model made in order to achieve the mold?

We have a range of metal alloys. Some have lead as part of the mix, some do not. Our 5 and 6 Star metals do not have any lead in them. The Model Metal or Standard Casting Metal do have some lead. We do not recommend using pure lead in the moulds.
