As Jami Rigsby-Jenkins mentions, it will depend on your pattern. Mine has several rows of knit, after a row of knitting with yarn in front (wyif) with other stitches in between. Now, I’m on the row of knitting with the “uls” instructions. I will be able to do what our videoer for Purl Soho has shown us and pick up the “loose strand” left by knitting the loose strand created by the “wyif” from several rows below the current row.
This is so helpful! Thank you! 😊 I have a pattern that says I need to m1r under the loose strand. Does that mean I pick up the normal thread for a m1r but do the actual knit stitch through the front as a uls? Or does it mean I m1r by picking up the loose strands? Novice knitter me is confused 😕
Hi potatobadger79 - If my understanding's correct, you would need to pick up the loose strand (from the front) and then m1r into the bar below the stitch to be worked (as normal). Basically, any "uls" instruction implies you scoop up the strand and THEN work the stitch required as you would normally. Here's our tutorial on m1r if it helps shed some light! I'm not doing this Purl Soho pattern but I found this instruction in a pattern and had no idea what they wanted.
Now I do. Thanks so much!
Thank you for all your great videos. Question is, where does the loose strand come from?
The pattern I’m using has me k1, then put the yarn in front and slip three stitches purlwise. Hope that helps! ❤️

On this trellis stitch swatch, how may stitches do you cast on?
This reply is late but the pattern I’ve found says 6+3, hope that helps anyone who wonders down the road…
