You'd be shocked. I recently got into an argument with people who hate homemade gifts. Reasons given were they would rather you just get stuff off their registry, it doesn't fit their aesthetic, they think it's a cheap cop out. I'm still going to gift my cross-stitch projects.

@@lantieunguu930 I broke down how much a 20 hour project would cost just in time using the federal and my state minimum wage, just to make a point. They took that as me bragging about how much I think I'm worth. Like... that was not the point.

@@ivyblack8145 If they have a registry, then it would be polite to stick to that unless they have indicated they are open to other things. Tastes and styles ARE different and rejecting, re-gifting or even throwing away a homemade gift will almost certainly lead to the person who made the gift feel slighted, making the gift a burden of sorts.
If they don't like it, that is. If they like it, all is good of course, and I think a homemade gift will be that more meaningful to someone who loves it. But you probably should know the person very well and be able to judge what they like. When in doubt, just ask. Might be less of a surprise, but wil avoid misalignement of expectations and disappointment on both sides.
Ultimately, the person who receives the gift has to like it, it's not your place to "teach" them what they should like.

If someone doesn't appreciate a gift because they think it's cheap, they've lost the meaning behind gift giving as a whole. Handmade gifts are what people really hold onto when they look back later in life, not some fancy store bought trinket. Someone made my dad a blanket when he was sick. When he passed, my oldest child got attached to it. He doesn't sleep with it anymore, but it's still there in his room waiting for him to grab it and take a minute to remember. When he has kids, he plans to pass it down. All because someone took the time to make a blanket by hand. Your friends and family are lucky to have someone who loves them enough to make them a memory they can hold.

No, crochet for sale is completely unsustainable. It's hard on your body if you do too much (carpal tunnel, etc) and almost impossible to charge a fair price for. That's why the only crochet things you see in stores are made in third-world countries where labor costs a lot less. Otherwise, people who sell their own stuff generally do so as a side-gig without really charging for labor. I would have to charge hundreds of dollars for a tiny stuffed animal to match what I would make hourly at my day job, and I am sure it's the same for her.
