This is a live Trap drum remix of "Savage Mode" by 21 Savage (Produced by Metro Boomin). METRO BOOMIN!
Always thought it was impossible to play trap on drums until this
Gus Corona it’s almost impossible 😂... I had to learn to adapt to a completely different and new way of playing my drums...Trap on real drums is really weird to play...it’s unlike any other style I’ve ever played..,it was never meant to played on a drum kit like say jazz, rock, funk etc...but that’s what I love about it! It kicks my ass 🥁🥁🥁
Gus Corona me too I thought it was just midi he kill it 🥁
Fern Ace hybrid organic trap beats live and in real time - mistakes and all 🔥👊🔥 So glad you dig man
GM 99 Hey! Thanks for the question! If you want the long in-depth version of my answer to your question and you’re also a drummer, you may be interested in taking a peek at this book -> hudsonmusic.com/product/trap-style-drumming/
...but in a nutshell...Like most electronic/produced music, Trap music never started with the ‘live musician’ in mind...especially the drums...and to add, many of the artists creating Trap *don’t think like drummers* when they program beat patterns...so in terms of actual drums, you end up getting some very unconventional patterns and tones... most other styles (rock, jazz, funk, you name it) start with real musicians...so there are automatically ‘conventional’ ways to play those styles...i.e. - RH plays time, LH plays snare...usually based on an 8th note or 16th note feel...or a swung feel..in THIS style, the subdivisions tend to change...ALOT... and dance between duple and triple rhythms pretty constantly...that can be tricky (but doable) especially if you’re used to assigning your RH as the time keeper and your LH as the back beat. It goes even deeper when you’re trying to achieve the right drum tones and ‘touch’ on acoustic drums...to play Trap, it’s a must to play crisp and precise or it won’t sound right...furthermore, if you decide to emulate some of the production techniques used in this style..you may dive into things like Ableton Live for drum programming, etc. I hope this kinda answers the question...but if you haven’t tried playing this style..although they appear to be subtle, you will very quickly find the challenges this style presents. Mostly, it’s just a fun and challenging style to play. 👍👍👍
GM 99 Of Course!!
Those 1/64’s are on point.
Some people try to make these trap drum covers so flashy, but I like how simple, underproduced, solid fundamentals your cover is
I don't listen to this kinda music but dam dude I couldn't stop watching ... very talented bud.

So good!🤯just got your book yesterday
Wild man Willis hey man, I appreciate it. Let me know how you like the book! 👍
Loving it so far there’s a lot to chew I’m just working on the hi hat patterns trying to get up to tempo I’m feeling the clave is the same as a gogo beat minus the kick on the and of four. Plus I’ve watched most your other videos and your killing it
Wild man Willis I think you’re right about the GoGo beat. I’m glad you’re digging the book and thanks for checking out all the videos! I am also still trying to get that hihat stuff up to speed. It’s a challenging style for drums, for sure. Let me know how you progress man, keep me posted! 🔥👍🔥
Your hi hat sounds killer i was wondering what splash cymbals you use?I have a pair of 10 inch mini hats and I ordered a 6 inch microsnare which I’ve wanted to get since I first read about it anyway
shiiiiiiiiiiit ur on fire man
did you used triggers on those micro snares ? great drumming btw.
1:21 so sweet
o man awesome! better than the machine I always hear..much smoother and even cooler is trap drumming looks as dope as i imagined. PLEASE get on a stage with an act, sick of all the fake electronics.
Mad skills right there!
What hi-hat and snares are you using? My drum teacher has got very interested! :)
What's your setup?
This is fucking amazing
alan sam thanks man! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ThisIsTorch you should try doing some Indian folk beat. Also check out this Indian drummer anandan shivamani
alan sam oh yes, I forgot his name but I’ve seen him before - he’s great!
This gotta be a drum machine
All live drums :)
So nice, how to get trap snare tone bro.
I think you are the only man on youtube with the skills and creativity to do that, you should contact EZ drummer and think about making your own expansion
When I'll make a Rap hiphop RnB funk band my dream would be to have a drummer like you for sure.
Mr. Free thanks so much for that. It’s comments like these that inspire me to want to continue making more vids. Do you think if we’re to put together a sample/loop library for this style, producers would be into it?
Mr. Free bro i’m trynna join your band I feel like we have exactly the same taste.
@@ThisIsTorch not so much samples, those are a dime a dozen, but midi, specifically un-quantized midi, as you're playing it here...midi loops of those beats would be invaluable to chop up and use. If you just ran the audio from this vid into ableton and extract drums or midi from audio, it's so cleanly played I bet they all come out perfect first time. I'd buy that in a heartbeat, to get a particular drummer's timing style visible on the grid to see where they push and where they lay back, and use your own samples with it...
shatteredsquare I’ve considered things like this before...It’s been floating around in my head for years now...just the idea of putting together loops/grooves (with MIDI) and samples stylized through my playing/approach...you are honestly one of the few... the very few “early adopters” that understand what this is all about ...you’de be surprised how many producers (in LA for that matter) don’t seem to “get it” when I explain the vision. Many producers just write it off...they can just program a Trap beat...that’s how they think. I appreciate that you notice the subtleties behind this approach. You da man for that 🙏🙏🙏. I’ve been working on some records the past year or so..and not only are they in this style, but all the music was born of 100% improv, recorded in real-time (no click track), all organic timing and feel, as a three piece band with some post production. It’s like hearing a Trap track but it has a life and a soul (as opposed to a programmed sound)...it’s very interesting to listen to. Can’t wait to release it 🔥👊🔥
@@ThisIsTorch try to contact splice bro, thats where we get all the drum sounds, producers especialy use hi hat and percussion loops aka TOPS loops, because thats where theres a huge difference in the groove feel. But no trap drums, only a few so theyd definitely be interested you could have your own pack there.Origin Sound also does lots of cool trap packs maybe theyd be interested.
Dope. What hat and snare are you using?
your drumset is like fuckin shit goddamn beautiful
My dude - really well done especially on capturing the sound acoustically. What are you using infront of your snare...those don't look like the remo rototoms...some sort of piccalo?
Hey man - thanks for the kind words - those are micro snares
fuuckiing sick m8
I never seen something similar, other videos that i saw not listen it well like here
@thisistorch what cymbal is that small hi hat??
dude tell me all your setup please
mt foda slk
Where did you get the little snares and what kind of cymbal is that?
where did you get that mini snare and that mini hi hat???
“I SAID GUAT DAMN!”
so nice。。。

Hi ! What is your stack please ? thank you !
Hey! Thanks for your comment. I'm actually not using any stacks on this video. 1 crash and some hats (reg and mini)
WOW.. It's really perfect. But is the stress of the performer too much? I can't believe listening to the trap drum live. AND 2 years ago!
sneekeebeats stressful, not so much...challenging to play as a style on drums? Def one of the hardest styles I’ve ever tried to play...but so fun. 🔥👊🔥
How u trigger your hi hats
Rudiments much???
Oh MUCH too much.
Wow this is awesome
S Biegs 🙏 🙏🙏👊😎
do you put your instrumets in key in every new song ? Or are you useing C everytime ?
Hey there! I don’t usually tune my drums to the key of the song…but there are times when it makes sense to do that. For me, it’s mostly about finding the right tone…if it sounds right, it is right.
@@ThisIsTorch ok bet, I follow an thanks for the insight. Because I’m learning about scales and key and I was curious. I think Im over thinking it a bit, I have to much range with the scale. If it’s b minor I’m putting the instruments on B, am I wrong for this u think 🤔
@@thesaucychef2390 For drums, it's not always necessary to put them in the song key...in my experience, it rarely is. But you're not wrong for thinking this way either...there are times when the drums will sound best in the song key, it's just not a hard and fast rule...also, I will tell you this...I pretty much NEVER choose drum sounds based on song key, and VERY RARELY do I ever tune a drum to match a song key...if anything, I'll tune a drum to change it's tone, attack and quality to get the sound I want and also so it sits a certain way in a mix...those factors I just mentioned are the most important to me...the tuning can def have an impact, BUT to me, whether a drum is in key or not is hardly ever a determining factor on whether it sounds good or not. Hope that makes sense. So main point, just go with what sounds good and don't worry about what key the drum sound is in...play with things like tuning etc to get the sound you want, but don't worry about the drum sound being in key...just not necessary.
@@ThisIsTorch so it’s more important how it sits, makes sense. Attack, quality, mixing
That’s my next step to study then.
Thanks torch,
One ☝🏽 more question. Do you think it’s better to think about it as major energy and minor energy of the drum I mean instead of the key, scale, major, minor, just go off of ear n feeling.
@@thesaucychef2390 Yea, I'd say composition/production/mix are the most important in terms of getting the right sound. Picking the right sounds, tweaking sounds to get them right (if needed)...yes, how it sits in the mix and how it sounds is more important than all the music theory shit...music theory is just there to help you out when it can...to answer your last question...when it comes to a song/track..it's always about how you 'connect emotionally' to it...and that's how everyone else will connect to it as well...so for me personally, I try not to think in technical terms or in music theory terms...it's all about the emotion and vibe...so, the answer is usually NO...I don't think in terms of major or minor but rather...words like dark, menacing, sinister (for minor)...or uplifting, feel good, party vibes (for major), just as an example...where things like music theory can come in handy is just for instance if you want to play a guitar solo etc...or if you know what vibe you're going for, you'll have an idea where to start...but having great ears is arguably still more important...there are plenty of musicians throughout history who had little working music theory knowledge and were able to play or create really amazing music. And with all this being said, I went to Berklee College and got a great music education, I know my theory...what I can tell you is...having the knowledge is a great tool...but tap into it when you need to...it's good to know the rules so you can break them/forget them later...music theory shouldn't dictate your creative decisions...it's just a road map
please make more trap beats on real drums !!
Aminu Acidu I gotchu!! What do you like about how these beats sound on real drums? Really curious to hear your thoughts! 🔥👊🔥
@@ThisIsTorch Everything about this video is good . no vocals , awesome very fast drumming . just do more :D
Other comments said it all.
Triggers, right?
That's right, it's a hybrid mix - you're hearing both triggers and acoustic drums in this video. Check out this other video ( ua-cam.com/video/jyem1lf6dsE/v-deo.html ) if you want to hear this same set up without triggers/only acoustic drums. It's an excerpt from my book "Trap Style Drumming." Hope you dig!
If i had your skills and your kit i would be spamming youtube with cover videos and more
Aminu Acidu 🔥👊🔥🙏🙏🙏
Seriously bro... One a week would make you famous. Take the top trending beats... Cover them. Bam. You're too good not to. You know how many producers would kill for this type of skill??? Let's go!!
How the f you get Such clean rolls 😭
Practice...lots and lots of practice...and then maintaining...if I go several days without practice, the slop comes back
Tooooo deep.
This is sick man trap/ drill music is so hard to play to
Def kicks my ass for sure…but so fun to play! 🥁🥁🥁🥁
what the... god damm...
Puto Amo!
Trap on drums is basically Technical Death Metal, just replace the kicks with hi-hats
BrigandOfBagnolo yess!! Ive been saying this for the longest. Trap and metal have so much in common in intensity of bass and drums
@@whirlypop313 Well, the differences are that one is extremely popular and the other is underground, one takes huge amounts of dedication and training to perform, the other you don't even have to perform it
Holy Fuck bruh!
Djent kicks = Trap hats
