Twenty two years ago, I sat in a lecture theatre in University listening to a set from Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan. He was getting feedback in the sound check, so he just unplugged the guitar and mic and they both sat on the stage and filed the room with magic. He's an incredible musician and performer and we were so lucky to witness it.
My daughter came out in a birthing pool to this song…. We saved 473 tracks and she came out to the “Blowers Daughter”….. This song means a lot. I’m an Irishman living in England (married to a beautiful English 🌹) my name is Robert O’ Halloran…. My last name means “Stranger from the sea 🌊 “ my daughters name is Fíadh O’ Halloran which translates to “wild and untamed stranger from the sea” which I think about so much!
@@ednagillum7342 Several different definitions for "Blowers Daughter". 1. girl who is free spirited and goes with the breeze, unbound, unowned 2. A clarinet player is called a "blower" 3. Old English term for the telephone 4. One story that went around about who or what a Blowers Daughter is for this song is: Damien Rice was involved with the Daughter of his Clarinet teacher. 5. Several more stories about who / what the Blowers Daughter is have been floating around for years. I like to think that they are all true and all false at the same time.
@@robc5051 Back when I first saw Damien play years ago he explained the meaning of the song, and it took me a while to understand the relevance. I didn't get it at the time, but luckily someone taped the show and I was able to listen back to it. The Blower in question wasn't a clarinet teacher, but the cockney rhyming slang for the telephone (Stick with me, I know it sounds ambiguous!). Before he was in Juniper Damien worked at a call centre selling mortgages and loans, and spent all day on the telephone. He grew sick of speaking to people for 8 hours a day without seeing anyone's face, and he began to fantasize about the people behind the many voices he heard. One summer day he phoned a house and a girl with a melodic soft, sweet voice answered the phone. He was calling for her father, but he wasn't in. Protocol said he should have ended the call and phoned back another time, but he was mesmerized and enchanted by her voice and ended up chatting to her for over an hour. Damien began a secret relationship of sorts with the girl, always calling when he knew her father wouldn't be home just so they could talk, despite knowing that it could get him sacked. He dreamed of her at night, daydreamed about her all day long. This continued for over a month, but one day he called and there was no answer. For the next week he called again numerous times a day, but still nobody picked up the phone. Confused by this abrupt end to the relationship, Damien became angry and obsessive (you were right about the obsessive bit) and found out the address of the girl. He took a day off work and got the bus out to the address. Hidden in a hedge he watched the front door fervently for any signs of life, but he didn't expect what he finally saw. The voice was unmistakably the same, and as she shouted 'bye mum', closing the front door behind her Damien was amazed to see that this dreamgirl of his was wearing a school uniform. He couldn't believe his eyes and could not stop staring at her in shock. All the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place - she was at home during the school holidays, led him on and played games, then when school started back she just stopped. Damien was angry but obviously couldn't tell anybody about it for fear of being branded a perv. He left the company and formed Juniper shortly after.
@@TerryGrancho "the pupil in denial" line is so clever because it could mean he can't believe his eyes or he could be talking about a "pupil" as in a schoolgirl.
All that raw emotions from the audience surrounding him. I felt it back here at my home. It's almost like a beautiful funeral service. The air is thick with so much.
I just love how they are all just listening and watching. Listening purely. No mobile phones to try and capture the moment. Their own experience and memories will be far more precious than anything else without that unnecessary distraction.
This music is like a beautiful heart wrenching dream. I had a glimpse of this feeling but ran away from it. Now I only long in a heartbroken delirium for what never was! But when I'm clearheaded I say "Damn you heart wrenching hipster music!". And I feel better. But I come back to listen again and again.....
I am lost for words watching that just how one man and guitar can make people cry in the crowd, the song on the from Damian was moving but this is another level , it was the way the woman fell into her man’s arms crying that’s what got me
I got lost in this song when it first came out. I remember finding it by accident and It blew my mind. I'm a huge Damien Rice fan, and even though I had seen this performance already, today, it hit differently, I felt that connection with it the same way the lady in the back starts to cry and look for comfort... an epic performance, such a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing it.

The Lady that falls into the arms of the Gentleman is the clear recipient of the tune.
