    Nice video Dan. Certainly appreciate the shout out. Between the stinging nettle, side hilling, and rattlesnakes, you guys sure had a tough go of it. Looking forward to Part 2.

      Thanks Jason! I appreciate that. Love your channel. It definitely was a tough trail. We did it in July so it was very overgrown and chest high stinging nettle. And at the time, there were countless blowdowns. It’s a fun trail but rugged. It may be better now being Fall. The app AllTrails has a few up-to-date comments (each loop has its own separate map) on trips from people this year if you need intel. Thanks again!

    Another great day on the trail. A little short of your day goal but still impressive at 17+ miles. Dang, that is a ton of rattlesnakes. I know we have a bunch here in Utah but you saw more on this trip than I have in all my life here. Be careful. Have a great day, Dan.

      Thanks! I saw three this trip and three last trip and a few here and there this year. But, I have seen more in the last few months than I have in my entire life. Not sure why there are so many all of the sudden. We had the 17 year cicada hatch this year and I know the rattlesnakes love to sit at the foot of the trees and eat them. Maybe that’s why. Tics too. We hit 26 miles that day but the trail was not fun at all. That trail is on my list of the worst trails to me. The list is short and so far that is the only one on it. Lol. Maybe I would feel different in the spring or fall.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 I didn't know the rattlers are cicadas. That is interesting. 26 miles is far! I did 14.5 each day of 2 days on my last trip and I was spent. You are a stud. Well done.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn’t say stud. Lol. It was tough. I think on my next few trips I’m going to slow down a little and not put in so many miles. Maybe spend more time in camp. I dont want to say I’m getting old but as I get older it is getting just a little tougher each year. 14 miles is a lot of miles so don’t think it isn’t. Plus if I remember you have a heavier pack which makes the 14 miles much more impressive.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 It certainly is a different terrain and elevation. Around here there is typically too much to see and do along the way. No green tunnel so to speak. Long miles here means you are typically missing much of the highlights of the area along the way. Normally around here 5-10 miles is typical with all the sights to see along the way. Besides I'm getting older and the less miles is good for my bones! No matter, I still want the opportunity to hike in your area long miles or short. From what I've seen of your trips it looks like a nice area. Thanks Dan.

    Hammocks are the best way to go. You can hang anywhere and let the tents have the flat , root free spots. Anyway , that's what I do. I make my own Ramen Rescue by using the dehydrated Vegetable soup mix from Harmony House foods. The scenery shots are nice , a great way to see what the trail and area is like.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 роки тому +1

      I think I may switch and use my hammock more often again. Used to be 100% but I wanted to go a little lighter. My summer hammock set up is about two pounds heavier than my summer tent setup but I think the extra weight will be worth it. I’m still getting rid of the ramen rescues I still had. I’m taking your advice in a previous comment and getting the dehydrated veggies and such and assembling it myself. A lot cheaper and it’s pretty much the same thing. This trail was one of the toughest I hiked so far. Mainly because of the over growth and blow downs.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 .... I put together a overnight UL package that comes out to 28.4 oz for everything , Hammock ( 7.6 oz ) , Tree straps ( 2.3 oz , for both ) , Bug Net ( 5.5 oz ) and Rain fly (13 oz ) . It's a nice overnight package for our hot , humid , semi tropical weather. Even a bad trip ( if there's such a critter ) beats a good day anywhere else.

      That’s really light! My hammock with all its storage add one and the 15 foot straps weighs 25 oz. I was thinking if going back to my tree straps and whoopie slings for the summer. They are way lighter and I think that’s where the weight really comes to play.

      @@backpackingadventures4813 SPAM straight from the pouch! That's hardcore man! 😀 I think if you dial it in you can still stay light with a hammock. It cost me my left leg but I'm able to be under 4 pounds TOTAL now. I've hiked a lot in Rattlesnake land but I've actually NEVER seen one! This was a good one pal!

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 роки тому

      @@BackpackingwithBuckley lots of rattlesnakes in PA. My hammock set up is really light. At least I think it is but it is heavier than my tent setup. My hammock with the 15 feet straps and storage ad ons is about 25oz and my tarp is about 16 oz with all the guy lines, hardware and stakes so that is about 2.5 pounds and if I add in my top (13.8 oz) and bottom (12.58 oz) quilts I am totaling 67 oz or 4.2 total pounds. I think that is really light but my tent setup is even lighter. I could shave probably a half a point by switching back to my whoopie slings, which I am in the process of doing and removing some of the ridge line storage things. My tent set up with the tent (18 oz tent and stakes), pad (15 oz my more beefy one) and top quilt (14 oz) I am at only 47 oz or 2.9 pounds. So it isn’t that my hammock set up is heavy. It is just heavier than my tent setup by about 1.3 pounds.

    Great video Dan! I was going to say what a beautiful trail, and then you mentioned that there were no overlooks and you're just slogging through the trees the whole way. Still, pretty amazing scenery, with the moss, rocks, plants and creek. Great find with that one campsite! Looks like a huge outdoor living room haha. Those snakes are scary man! Glad you guys kept your eyes peeled and avoided them.

      Yeah, this trail isn’t my favorite. Not really much to see. It was mainly in a valley where you had to side hill it most of the way through overgrowth. The east loop (next video) was a little more scenic but still no overlooks. More overgrown and tons of blow downs. But it’s off my list now.

  • @mackjenkins7721

    The video man. It sounds like the trail was giving you 2 a workout. I was cool until you showed me the rattlesnake. I'm used to seeing rattlesnakes in the brown color it's the first time I seen them in Black. It look like they both blend in with the ground pretty well. I'm just glad that you and Dakota didn't get bitten since there was a close call. I like how Dakota took off his shoes and socks while taking a break. That's something you don't see a lot of people doing in videos. Your feet really take a beating on those trails and letting your feet air out is good so they don't blister up while you are out on the trail. The video man thank you for sharing.

    • @backpackingadventures4813
      @backpackingadventures4813  3 роки тому

      Feet maintenance is important on trail. They are your transportation after all. I usually only take my shoes and socks off if they are wet or there is an issue that may be brewing. We did have a couple close calls with the snakes. The timber rattlesnakes in PA have a brown/yellow phase and a black phase but it’s the same snake. I mostly see the brown ones.
