Body Paint is Alex reflecting on the different personas he adopts for each album and how he pretends they’re a writing tool, but really he’s using them to hide his real self. He’s the master of deception and subterfuge (the liar) who has made himself a bed to (tell) lie(s) in. The time travelling is just living. The normal passage of time. He’s accusing himself of spending it in the tanning booth covering himself with fakery to hide his real self from everyone. The body paint is the remnants of those personas that he is taking from the cover shoots, where he dresses up in the costumes of the characters, and keeping them alive in his real life to hide his own personality.

In an NME interview in 2018 he said he was going to stop writing ‘love songs’, so that’s what he promised he wouldn’t do, but since this is a break up song, it better suits the mood.
I love what you have thought about body paint and your thinking is quite logical and easy to understand. for me I have a completely different opinion because I think alex might think that writing about his past is to simple. I reckon the song is a reflection of himself and his personas he has put on during each album and each performance. he has come open to having different personas in a recent interview and how he should influence the music instead of the music influencing him. I think that the song is talking about his different personas and personalities we can quite obviously see change through each album. some lyrics like: im keeping on my costume and calling it a writing tool could see how he hides himself away behind his sunglasses and different personas. the: there's still a trace of body paint on your legs and on yours arms is talking about how he can still see them in himself sometimes or how he dresses and I took this as also his Sheffield tattoo is still a bit of his past im pretty sure he's removed now. another lyric: master of deception and subterfuge is him making everyone believe he's someone he's not. so I just think this songs about looking at his personas and how he's changed with each album to hide behind himself and his music. I think this album will draw out the most "real" alex. (I'm pretty sure that interview was with the guardian) your opinion is strong and anyone can interpret that song how they want. YES!!! god, i have finally found someone who thinks the same as i do! i also reckon that the car itself symbolizes the revelation or dealing with the real feelings, that Alex has been hiding under the layers of metaphors for many years. that is why the opening song is about Alex coming closer to the car still not deciding if he is going to get in it. so the whole album, I suppose, is a path to this exact revelation. and the body paint is fully about deception and hiding which also refers to the different personas from the past. god, i am so excited about the car era!

Oh wow, I loved this video! I saw the tiktok you mentioned in the beginning too and I thought it was pretty funny, but didn't really agree with the theory because I don't think all those beautifulful lyrics are about something as simple as that. I love your view of the songs, but I secretly hope you're wrong... I'll really miss them if this turns out to be their last album :(
