I’m currently reading a book called “Dakota Life in the Upper Midwest” by Samuel W. Pond to get more insight into the conflicts between the Whites and Indians.

Stop trying to explain away Lincoln's incompitence and terrible Native policy.

"Incompetence and terrible native policy" = Taking 303 Dakota warriors who were all sentenced to death, hanging only 38 and commuting the remaining 265 to temporary prison sentences.....

Noel ComiX I honestly don't think he gave a damn seeing as the country was already killing itself, he was fairly busy during his presidency. He was not incompetent he just had far larger issues on his mind.

What is to explain it's fairly obvious why he wasn't thinking all too much about it.

You can see the bloodthirsty elitist and racist "civilized" simpletons he had to deal with - probably the vast majority of americans at the time - I'm reluctant to blame him entirely

Most of the 38 hung at Mankato were guilty but there were a few among them that were innocent like the Santee-Dakota Chaska who not only had not killed anybody but had saved the life of whites at the risk of his own life. Not all the Dakota participated in that ill-fated war.

Guilty of what? Protecting their women and children? From evil? None of the 38 were guilty. Necessity knows no law.

Yeah, and the 600 civilians in Minnesota that were killed by the Sioux.

The incident with the cow was what started the first Sioux War in 1854 and had nothing to do with President Lincoln.
The 38 Santee rebels were hanged after participating in a brutal insurrection in which their bands had slaughtered 800 civilians, mostly women and children, and destroying entire settlements along the Minnesota River.
Lincoln spent his entire Presidency dealing with the Civil War and could have given a shit less about Indians.
Yet still, upon hearing that 303 of them were about to be executed, he had taken it upon himself to review each case individually for three whole days and concluded by commuting 265 to prison sentences while authorising the execution of the remaining 38.
Captain William Duley, who had lost several family members in the rebels' massacre at Lake Shetek, is the one who had cut the rope to execute the 38.

@@briansheehan5256 Well said. When I see ANTIFA in Portland talking about how terrible Lincoln was because of the Dakota 38+2, I just want to slap them. They always focus on federal govt but the real corruption was at the state level. Lincoln wasn't the one screwing over the Natives in Minnesota. He responded to the situation after the fact when nothing could be done to fix the injustices done by both sides.

38 Indians were hung because they attacked settlers in Minnesota killing in excess of 600 citizens. The city I live was one that citizens hid in the fort for fear of Sioux tribal warfare.

Long story short Native tribes became warriors for hire on both sides of the civil war due to corruption causing starvation. The losing side was treated as insurrectionist and were punished accordingly. The winning side created reservations for specific tribes while never fixing the state level corruption that caused the starvation and land grabs to begin with. To much blame is placed on Lincoln by current groups like ANTIFA. Dakota 38+2 is a tragedy and stain on our history but Lincoln is not to blame.

Not less than 800 settlers were massacred by elements within the Dakota. Men, women, and children alike were killed in a seemingly coordinated attack prior to any announcement of war. History is history and it needs to stay there. We were not there at the time. Most likely debt played a key role in their destruction. Kinda like the pay day loan places of today. There were preyed upon due to their lack of financial knowledge while being given money from the Government. It’s all very tragic.
