Reyes understands Geometry better than most mathematicians.
EDIT: I know he's not a Geometry professor guys. I was making an exaggeration. Whatever the scientific applications are that are involved in the game of pool, doesnt mean hes crunching numbers or calculating all this wild shit in his head because that's not all the game is about. It's about feel. And a lot of this is just natural talent and instinct that can't be taught really. He's incredible!

Not gonna lie, that saying always bugs me. Do you think he's actually calculating some angle or trying to square a circle or has to know what a parallelogram is to play pool? None of that is helpful. All you do is look at the direction the ball has to go, and hit the opposite side of the ball. It'll go the direction you hit it, if you hit it right. And what does hitting it right take? Not math, that's for sure.
I know, you all are still trying to say: but bank shots! Combos! He's amazing! And he is, but is that math? No, it's practice, and learning how the ball bounce off the rail at different speeds, with different english and at different angles. All three of those have significant effect on what the ball does, and is that math? No, it's practice.

Efren Reyes, or the magician, did not gain his exquisite and unique proficiency from nothing. He started playing pool since he was 8 y/o and now he's 65 y/o (dated today) which means he has been playing pool for 57 years (born August 26, 1954).
Efren has mastered the entire pool table angles, strikes force, unimaginable control and precision on the cue ball, and a very high self-confidence with absolutely no vanity (He's very humble and friendly by the way).
Two more things about Efren Reyes, he has never underestimated any opponent, and he has never neglected the calculation of any hit no matter how easy the ball is.
    God bless Efren Bata Reyes.

I could watch these shots all day. It's extra impressive when a player constantly reminds you that the angles in pool are just a small fraction of what's involved. Some of them are literally like combination locks to where you can't just get an angle or striking force perfected. It has to be the combination of several variables all coming together within incredibly small windows of tolerance.

20:37 was my favorite. After sinking the nine ball, he watches the cue ball and smiles as it slows. Still smiling as he walks around the table. He calls "side". One spectator hollers, "What??" Everybody laughs.
    Then... OMG!!
You could hear him chuckle as the 10 was approaching the cue ball on the way back from the end cushion.
Classic case of "He who laughs last, laughs best."
I'm thinking this must be a shot he practiced hundreds of times when he was a kid. Perhaps a bit of nostalgia, here? Like, "After 52 years of playing pool professionally, I finally get to make this shot!"
Edit: He was probably thinking, "Hey, this is just an exhibition. Anyway, I'm up 6-2. If I miss, so what? Everybody will love the attempt."

Not only a legend for he excelled in many games but also for the character and humble nature he brings to the table as well as his innovative cue ball control. The more he practices the luckier he gets! What awesome dedication and spirit!

Living in Los Angeles my whole life I have met Efren many times. He is the most humble man, incredibly nice, and will sign an autograph for anyone. My favorite memory of Efren is watching him sing karaoke while drinking beer, for hours. So funny. Hope to see him again but he doesn't come around much anymore since retiring. Hopefully you get to meet him one day.

@@Martin-gz4qn indeed. He seems to be how I picture him to be, according to everyone's account of him. I really want to pick his brain over kick shots, Earl for throw and side pocket shots, Shane for the break and Alex P for just being able to mearly have fun at that level.

    • @Martin-gz4qn
      @Martin-gz4qn 5 років тому +1

@@jeremiahshields7827 I can tell you what Shane would say about breaks. That he practices breaking over and over for hours, working on the mechanics of the break and perfecting them. That's what he does. Efren would say he knows kicking from 3 cushion, which he has played a lot in his life. Not sure what Earl or Alex would say.

Great video.. in honor of the GREATEST pool player in this planet yet so humble and down to earth, Efren "Bata" Reyes. Make no mistake, these shots are not stroke of good luck (HINDI TSAMBA), like Efren used to say he just got lucky. It's a work of a genius. Efren's mastery of the pool table is phenomenal and truly amazing. This video proves that on any given situation, he knows how to use every inch and every corner of the table to create and execute a shot, almost impossible to do. Unbelievable, but I've witnessed so many of those shots since the early 70's . No wonder they called him "The Magician", the one and only!!!
