  • We’re checking out the new and improved Fosi Audio TB10D 2-channel, Class D amp. This is an upgrade to the previous model, which by many accounts was not great. What is a Class D amp? I explain that in the video as well.

    Fosi is certainly and up and coming company with lots of affordable amps (including models with subwoofer outputs) and the company has even revised and improved previous models based on former reviews, so it's great when a company takes reviews/criticisms seriously to upgrade its products as well as the overall customer experience.

    Umm... Class D is not analog. It's a PWM (pulse width modulation) amp. Neither digital nor analog. I have a Fosi amp that I use with my gaming/video editing/audio editing rig. Class D can sound harsh, but if it does its because it's not being done correctly. Class D can sound really good, if done correctly.

    Just so everyone knows, this amp has been measured as 50wpc@8ohms, and 85wpc@4ohms just before clipping, with included 32v5A power adapter. Since Class D amps tend to lack fullness, the tone controls might help with the balance. I'd be curious to know if this amp sounds any different than my Aiyima A07 that has the same chip, and is surprisingly good with my KEF Q350 speakers. Not perfect, but good.

      Out of the box, both amps sound about the same if you have the tone controls centered properly. It's the same chip, so you probably wouldn't get much of a difference.

      I would say even less. It is not in pair with my Rotel which is rated 40W@8Ohm. This start to clipping earlier, not saying less dynamic and much harsher. It is OK for nearfield, but not for room listening.

    I tried that one last Fall and I returned it. Not because it was bad. It was pretty decent but I currently use an older model from Fosi for my computer and for that purpose, there was no noticeable improvements (a little better sound but it was marginal at best). Also, for my purpose I didn't need the bump in power this provides so all in all, I thought it was not worth the upgrade for me.
    That said, if you need to crank the sound in a big room with big speaker, this would certainly a good starting point for cheap.
    Their phono preamp is quite good and a a great deal.

    I prefer the sound of TB10D compared to ZA3 monoblocks...it can easily drive my vintage 6ft tall Genesis APM-1 speakers (89dB sensitivity) .....sounds extremely detailed, neutral and very transparent...amazing bass. Connected directly to my CD player. I'm using the 48v 5a power supply from the ZA3....it can get very loud at 9 o'clock volume so most of the time I'm only set between 7 and 8 o'clock. Very detailed even at the lowest volume level.

    Bit off topic, Frank. I also have Fluance Reference tower speakers and while looking for an amp to complement them I contacted Fluance for suggestions, there were none, but when I asked if Emotiva BasX A2m Stereo Flex Amplifier rated at 50W into 8Ohms would work Fluance agent told me that: " If you check the specification section of the XL8FW Speakers you will see that these speakers have a power handling of 80 - 160 Watts RMS, given this amp has a power output of 50W it would not be compatible with them."
    Then I watch this video where you say that you are using Marantz PM6004 and according to its specs it puts out 45Watts into 8 Ohms and like you say it sounds great.
    Please help me understand what I am missing here as I am lost trying to find an amp that will have appropriate power for Fluance Reference yet not cost arm and a leg.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579

      Sorry for the late reply, but I just stumbled across this review.
      Speakers generally have 2 power ratings, like Fluance quoted to you.
      The lower rating is the "minimum recommended power" which is to avoid clipping that could damage the tweeters at high sound levels.
      The higher rating is the "maximum recommended power" which is generally to avoid overheating or damaging the woofer's voice coils.
      Can you run an 80-100 watt speaker off of (say) a 10 watt amplifier? Of course you can but you need to be careful not to get into excessive clipping. (i.e. don't turn it up to the point of distortion.)
      Can you run an 80-100 watt speaker off of (say) a 250 watt amplifier? Of course you can but you need to keep the power in check to avoid overheating the woofers.
      I have a tb-10d hooked up to a pair of Pioneer towers and it works a treat.

    An assessory that might go well with the Fosi is a Bellari PP532 Passive Audiophile Preamp if you want to stay small but plug in more (up to 4) source inputs. It's another $110 so unfortunately it's starting to get close to the cost of a low power class A/B integrated or receiver. Bellari makes some interesting stuff and it's made in the USA (if that's a consideration).

    PS... for streaming, I bought a Grace Digital Gracelink. It has an app I can control it with, but it has a nice color lcd display too so you can control it from the front panel. Its cheaper than that Arylic, but doesn't have an amp...but I didn't want one anyway. It can also play music from my NAS.

    • @jimb032
      @jimb032 Рік тому

      @Douglas Blake There is nothing analog about PWM. It's literally time slices of on and off. Ok, it's an analog signal, but it is not being handled in an analog way. At all.
      "
      Class D amps, also known as “digital” amplifiers, work by shifting the sample frequency at which they operate up to extremely high frequencies. In doing so, they use MUCH smaller power transformers which takes up far less interior space"
      As is the case with that tiny amp he holds in the palm of his hand. It has about the same digital IC found in all of them.
      Ok, the D might not stand for digital in this case, but that in no way makes that an analog amp. It IS high frequency switched.

    Apparently they are soon to release a new version. I returned my BT30D because it was not compatible with 48 volt 10 amp power supply needed to take advantage of the TI 3255 chip and to get max performance, not achieved with the 32v power supply.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579
      @Douglas_Blake_579 Рік тому

      There are actually two amps from Fosi designated BT30D ...
      The original BT30D which uses the TPA3116 chip that maxes out at 24 volts.
      And the new BT30D *Pro* which is TPA3255 based and can work at 48 volts.
      But... you should also ask yourself what the advantage of the 48 volt supply would be... The TPA3255 is a fixed gain chip, so if you're playing music at (say) 65 db and you swap in the 48 volt supply, it's very unlikely you would hear any difference at all. What the bigger supply gives you is a bit more headroom (3db worth) but no significant change in volume or sound quality.

    • @vinylmonster4907
      @vinylmonster4907 Рік тому

      @@Douglas_Blake_579 Interestingly, the only place i could find the 48 volt power supply was on Fosi's website and it cost almost as much as the amplifier. I got it because i wanted to test the difference but cant bring myself to spend up so much for the 48 volt power supply when the stock is more than adequate for my needs.

    • @vinylmonster4907
      @vinylmonster4907 Рік тому

      @Douglas_Blake_579 recent addition the 48V 5amp power supply for this is now on sale on Amazon for 20.00 less than on Fosi's own website. So I grabbed one up - just to see for myself. And i dont know what you are basing your opinions on, you certainly haven't done an actual test from personal use of the gear mentioned, i noticed a vast difference as if my speakers woke up and stretched. I'd recommend the upgraded power supply even if you poo poo it without trying it.

      YES ... I have both listened for and measured the differences. What you get is a bit more headroom with almost no change in sonic quality.

      Short version ...
      I put it on my test bench and went over it with a fine tooth comb. I discovered design errors in the standby circuit that could leave the amp on, even when turned off and I found an issue with the output coils being too close to the chip's heat sink that was causing both degraded sound and excessive heating. (coils and big lumps of metal don't get along well)
      These are not things you would expect a subjective reviewer to discover, since they lay in the design itself. But they are problems, none the less.
      I've informed Fosi and even submitted detail about fixing them. I did the mods on my own TB10D and they're working out very nicely ... it runs cool and the sound quality is much improved.
