I'm 5'7" tall, so not the easiest to lift. I was in an adagio pas de deux that started with a press lift in the wings. My partner walked on, no music, with me hoisted over his head. The music started as he lowered me SLOWLY into arabesque en pointe. That can't have been easy but he never complained. Best partner ever.

@@me67226 Most ballet companies' average height for a female is approximately 167cm (just over 5'5"). However, in Europe some companies require females to be no taller than the traditional 165cm (just shy of 5'5"), while others have a minimum height of 173cm (about 5'8"). Apparently, one company's female principal is 184 cm (over 6')!

@@me67226 I dont think so, I think 5'4-5'5 is more ideal because 5'7 on pointe makes you like 6' and male dancers are like 6' or under and you want to still be shorter than them on pointe

From an audience/costumer perspective, I like the shoulder sit EXCEPT when a pancake tutu is involved. It gets so squished and awkward and I feel like it can't be nice for the guys to get a face full of tutu!

  • @ricopoisson

The angel / press lift is so hard for the male partner because you have to press up from a hard postion for the arms and then hold the female partner up for a long time. Same with the slow grand jeté which is probably why the positiion of the female partner is so awkward in that lift: it's easier to hold her directly above the head

I'm with you on the Pas d'Esclave lift. It's an unflattering angle and the leg position is just no. Honestly, if too much of the underside of a platter tutu is showing, the lift doesn't look quite right.
Kudos to all of the partners lifting dancers in such awkward positions!

The dip is a staple for a reason. The highlight of Symphony in C is the ultra slow dip in the adagio movement, particularly when performed by Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins. Farrell would lean back and let gravity take over to move her off center. Martins would support her through a super slow fall. It was breath taking

This was so interesting to me, for lots of reasons! I'm not a ballet dancer, have never been a ballet dancer, did three ballet classes as a small girl and hated it because I've always been physically strong but not flexible, and I have no family members or friends who are ballet dancers... but there is so much enjoyable ballet content on UA-cam! You two are up there with the best.
This is where I was really interested by one statement in this video in particular. I didn't know until this video that entrechats were called entrechats; I called them "twiddly feet" and knew only that I didn't really like them... but I figured hey, that was just me being ignorant, and that maybe, when I'd seen more, I'd discover the beauty to them. Apparently not necessarily!! One can be a lifelong ballet nerd and have dance training and know vastly more than I do and still not really see the point to entrechats.
Don't get me wrong: I can see the skill, and I give respect as ever to the dancers for the strength and timing needed to execute them correctly... but, eh, why? Why we do that? * scratches head *
Keep being your glorious, nerdy selves! Your videos are fabulous.

I LOVE this video!!! I love dancing with my partner and I think one of the most “terrible” things of PDDs is changing partners.
I think my favorites are the thrust lifts (sorry if my English has exited the chat 💬) or anything that involves me throwing all caution and consequences and thrusting myself so that my partner catches me or running at him so that he lifts me. If it involves danger, count me in. However, story time: I’d changed partners and his previous partner wasn’t as eager to shall we say pull her own weight so when I came at him he thought he was lifting dead weight and I went over the falls

Just the entrance alone while in a shoulder sit just makes you feel like royalty plus you usually get a big applause from the audience. Now I will say that Im with you about the entrechat, I am not a big fan of those at all or the royale.

As a nonbinary dancer I feel like pas de deux has all of the steps that show off the biggest gap between what I was initially taught and the roles I've had in the last few productions I've been in- I love how cool they look but am always struggling with a) being shorter than the person I'm partnering and b) being terrified of lifts regardless of what side of them I'm on
I think I've always loved the "assisted jump" lifts though, especially when they are fast- my studio used to have a Hansel and Gretel production yearly with relatively unique choreography and it was fun to watch the way Gretel and the Witch dancing together like that brought the climax of the story together
(And then I had to do a shoulder sit lift matching height with someone else with our Gretel (who was taller than me) balanced on myself and someone else's shoulder and my fear of lifts made that one difficult for everyone...lol)

I was a cheerleader in middle school and high school. Getting thrown up in the air does make you want to pucker your booty hole, but that's a good thing! As you said, it's got the wow factor; the crowd loves it, and it's fun! Also, keeping your muscles tight when being a flyer or dancer who gets lifted helps your partner grab onto you and move you more safely. What's easier to catch and move precisely? A dry, stiff noodle or a wet, limp one? I'm going to choose the uncooked noodles every time.
