I’ve been learning cello for a month and seeing you experience it through a beginner’s eyes and making the same screeching sounds I make is so validating. I love your videos! You’re an excellent teacher!

I'm a 71 yr old adult learner been training for not quite 3 months. Taking lessons and have to say it is the first time I enjoy practice time. My ear is better than my reading but I'm getting there. Your videos are inspiring and informative. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I can now play Morning Has Broken and working on Ashoken Farewell. A little scratchy in parts and well it's that ever correcting bow hold and bowing eh?

I've been wanting to play cello ever since I could remember and I just bought myself a cello. It's the lushest thing I've ever done. You're videos are keeping me excited about the journey!

Great attitude. A true teacher - willing to set ego aside and put yourself in the shoes of a beginner. Awesome.

Thanks for the video, it's really helpful. I'm not an absolute beginner, I've played for 2 and 1/2 years, but I hit "blocks", like, if I do a piece with lots of shifting AND difficult bowings (for me), everything goes out of the window : intonation, posture, bow placement, bow speed, ... It's even worse if I have to do : difficult bowings + shifting + extensions in 4th position. So, if I want to work on my intonation, I put my bow away and I play in pizz for a while. Then, for the bow, I just play a scale in 1st postion, but with the bowings I find difficult. Then I put everything together, but I practice a few bars, untill I can (kind of) play the whole piece. And your video makes me think I should pick up the "open string" exercise again.

That was all kinds of fun and hilarious to see you making all those concentrating faces and see your brain working so hard, when it's usually me doing that.
    So _that's_ what I look like!! 🤣

Lol...I REALLY needed to see this. It was like watching me the whole time😂, the "Oh boy's" and frustration... so I nearly passed out from laughing when you realized, "I'm not breathing."
Me too! I'll be practicing, trying so hard to only hit one string (A &D are the hardest for me) and then I realize, "I'm not breathing." This is so encouraging, thank you Johnathan, thank you for remembering what it's like. I think I'm going to watch this every day!❤️😂

Years ago I was a rather good athlete, competing at world and european championships. Whenever I wanted to change something about my technique I did it with my left hand first so I was more aware of every movement and could consciously change details. My right did everything automatically so changing things first with my left arm was a big help in being aware of any differences.

Thank you so much! It's really comforting to be understood. What it's like to be a beginner.. My teacher describes it as "10 televisions in your head all playing at the same time ".. You have to concentrate on soooo many things when you're learning plus everything hurts 😂 thank you for the tip to simplify the process and concentrate on one thing before adding another and another... You're a great teacher by the way ❤️lots of love from Germany

I have just spent a half hour (day three) practising bowing technique, one string at a time. Not even yet looking to play scales obviously. I met a guitarist in West Africa who learned to play on the guitars of tourists. He is left-handed and simply played the guitar with the strings in a right hand position. For you to have bowed left hand, I suppose to should have changed the strings around but you have done the same as Amadou.

Hi Jonathan, I wonder why string instruments like here, a Cello, not having position makers (dots). I know It may be for tradition. However, I’m finding a more logical answer.
    Many thanks!

Good point! NS cellos have integrated acrylic dots inlaid into the fingerboard. I think it has more to do with the bridge moving about and changing shape during the instrument's lifespan.

Got a question. Where do you recommend to get either free sheet music or inexpensive sheet music? I am transitioning from violin to cello (for fun) and would love to have to pieces as a challenge and also have some music that is more modern. I would also prefer them to be solo because i have non playing friends or French horn friends 😂

So I play cello like you just demonstrated, not in the typical way everyone plays. I'm left handed for a number of things, and when I picked up the cello I naturally started fingering with my right hand. Maybe I should have gotten lessons, and avoided all my bad habits 😂.
    I can't imagine changing now!

Hi Jonathan, please can you help? I'm desperate to practice but I NEED to sound proof, can you recommend the best material? I have a mute already but, I need more dampening!
I can't afford an electric Cello, besides my German one is lovely!
Thank you!! And Happy New year!

@@CelloCoach Thanks. At least if I move house they can come with me!
I'll probably try compacted wool. I've heard the shop bought ones only really help for higher frequencies.

i play like that because im left handed, i cant play like most cello players do. The way you struggle with that position is how i feel with the right hand 🙂
