Very good demo with a reasonable take on the Pearly Gates. It's a great pickup, but not really suited to metal. It can do hard rock, but I think a better choice would be a JB, Distortion, Alternative 8, Custom, Custom Custom, or Custom 5. The original Fender HM Strat that came out in the late 80s had a DiMarzio Super 3 in the bridge which is a good but limited pickup for hard rock and metal. Greg Howe used it when he endorsed the HM Strat. For high gain, crunchy pickups I've always thought the Duncan Distortion was the best. The JB is one of the most versatile high output pups. The Custom trio is also great. For the sake of clarity brighter pups are easier to deal with than darker pups like the DiMarzio Tone Zone or Super 3. I've always preferred bright but not cloying distortion. Eddie set new standards for tone when the first VH album was released. George Lynch also has some great tones.

GREAT commentary! Thanks for the added perspective. The factory bridge pickup in the HM reissue (and the original - I have a late eighties and have had several originals over the years) are too hairy/thick/gonzo for my taste. No room for versatility.
I do enjoy ceramic magnet pickups, like the Distortion, from time to time, but I meed them paired with some sort of alnico single or stack to pull out a good clean tone with body.
Love the JB as well. It’s in my bones guitar with a series/parallel push/pull pot.
Couldn’t agree more re: Eddie and George’s tones.
Really appreciate your time and thoughts.

BTW Satriani has been known to use the Pearly Gates now and then even though he's been a long time DiMarzio endorser. He played a Kramer Pacer loaded with a JB on his first two albums.

For my taste, Joe’s always sounded a little on the solid state-y side. Must be that Boss distortion pedal. 😉
I have all the respect in the world for him as a player, of course.

Cool sound this pearly gate for hard rock! I'm curious compare it with the Screamin deamon tb12, what do you think?

      Hey there!
      Thanks for reaching out.
The Pearly Gates is MUCH “looser”/wild sounding than the Demon. The Demon is very bright, but has a tight, scooped sound.
      I hope this is helpful.
      Take care!

Love that guitar. The bridge and middle is fantastic.
I replaced the Duncan bridge pickup that came in my Jackson pro with a trembucker and absolutely love it. You're correct...it can be a bit thin at times. Rolling back the tone a bit makes all the difference.
    Great video. 👍

Can you do a Dokken kiss of death solo lesson?

I actually did a slow walkthrough here:
George Lynch’s “Kiss of Death” solo (walkthrough)

This is likely as close as I’ll come to a full lesson.

Believe it or not, I had a pink HM Strat in around 1990, with a rosewood fretboard. I loved it, I traded it though. 😢
