Back then in 2008 she belted a LOT because she sang really high and thickly, and she had a vocal range 2 octaves higher than she does now. I truly love this performance. What makes Del Rey different from other contemporary singers is the fact that she adds drama to the quality of her voice. We all know that having a beautiful voice and a flawless vocal technique isn't enough: true art necessarily moves us, makes us feel more deeply, makes us sad or happy, it makes us think and remember our own experiences.
All my friends say her music sounds depressing and stuff and actually it bothers me, cause if I would play a Lana song and would say it's number one in the charts, they wouldn't even recognize her voice! Lana WILL be HUGE! I promise. She's done so many great things and been on tv talk shows globally. Her album's already released in multiple countries. Her SNL performance caused so much talk, from there she gained recognition in the U.S. Big time, got more fans. A cool thing too is that she was the first artist since 1998 to perform on SNL before the release of her first album.
Amazing voice and tone, this was an amazing performance, with a lot of talent and genuine feelings. Her voice has one weakness though. I mean, sometimes you can hear her struggling when doing a certain pitch, but she goes over and under easily without problems. She tries real hard to make it ok, but it's impossible when it's right at the peak of lows, and under the lowest highs she is capable of.. it's simply the tipping point of her voice, and these songs are not very well suited for her voice. She has to put a tremendous amount of effort to sing those notes. None the less, even with that, she is amazing live, and there's something more than just the voice. She has some magic going on :) She is amazingly talented.
