OMFG .. I had not heard this one before. Love the original song, but Guy Harvey - the man is a fair God, I swear. That voice brings me to tears every time.
ahhh, the art of a cover. Usually 20% genius to 80% making the song sound the same .... Elbow reverse it - 80% Genius (and in no part it's due to Guy's vocals), 20%... an acoustic band making it their own ...nah 100% Genius!
This is absolutely wonderful, I can't quite get over how amazing the whole band are. D: I love Massive Attack too but this adds a new beautiful element to it, for sure.
Totally agree with you. Loved the original beyond belief, and didn't want anyone to mess it up by covering it badly. But, it's such a fabulous song, it's open to so many interpretations, and there are now some out there that truly do it justice. This gave me goosepimples, and is more of a homage to the original rather than a reinvention, which I think works better.
Elizabeth Fraser / Massive Attack's original - is obviously beautiful, and probably my favourite song ever, and this version is stunning love it. I'm so tired of listening to people murder it on youtube with loop-pedals. Thanks Elbow!
Dimitri Wolfs The Newton Faulkner version was how I found “Teardrop” and put me onto Massive Attack. There are a couple more artists I love and found because of their covers of “Teardrop”. Love the song!
..great cover!! All who enjoyed this will love Sneaker Pimps cover of "Hey Do" a traditional folk song covered from an old film, The Wicker man. Check it out, simply beautiful. Well worth the 3 minutes to watch.
Radio 1 playing something like this, blimey, talk about a diamond in a turd. Was going to say diamond in the rough, but this is radio 1 we're talking about.
The original song was dedicated to Jeff Buckley. "Fraser wrote the song's lyrics, inspired by the works of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard,. While recording the song in 1997, she found out that her once-close friend, Jeff Buckley, had disappeared and found drowned. "That was so weird ... I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway."
I love the original, love massive attack. I hated Newton Falkner, like forever, for making a crappy version. I loved Elbow, now I love them even more. Brilliant cover :)
finally, a cover that doesn't just copy the drum beat. a lot of the covers give the exact same feeling as the original---what's the point of that? the original made me feel like i was looking up at the stars driving down a road. this version more like rowing down a fog-covered river lit from underneath by glowing fish as i'm carried off to death, like a reverse moses. fyi, check Aqueous Transmission by Incubus if you want a similar feeling.
This combines two of my favourite things. Teardrop and Elbow. This was incredible! Easily, to me, the best cover version floating around - maybe even better than the original!
@Ly4nna Guy Garvey lol, Im sure that was just a typo, but I agree with ya, I got married to the original song, amazing! Love Elbow too, seen em 3 times so far!
@coltsuperocean10 well said, i could not agree more, R1 used to have an egde to it not anymore, funny though, i listen to talk sport most of the time now too.
found an slightly used Elbow *cd at a funky dive used book store....i believe it was Seldom Seen Kid or something/... i took it home with me... teardrops on the fire,.../..yes i stole it, ok
i didn't expect much... the cover looked like it was drawn in crayon by a teenager ...} opened it up and played it on my walkman one night while riding my bicycle in the middle of the night .... sound blew me a way./
I love this cover, but I agree that it's completely idiotic to call someone a moron for not liking the voice. It's not exactly Guy Garvey's best singing. Don't go on a rage against me for saying that, it's just opinion.
Original is good, José González's cover may be better, but Newton Faulkner's cover hands down is the best. Sadly, Guy's version does not stand up to these.
Love the band, love this song, but the voice is not quite "on" and it is troubling. The BBC live version of Mirrorball proves Garvey has the ability, it was just not quite here.
@iain075 , got to agree with you. radio 1 is absolute rubbish now!! Its like CBBC/ smash hits. in the space of about 12 months R1 has gone from average to pretty awful shite!! It started when Mark & Lard went all those years ago, they were good!! Radio 1 is absolute rubbish now!! I listen to talk sport now!! they dont do music!! (nore does R1 either now!!)
I love this cover and the original song. Both of them are just absolutely amazing.
Let's face it Guy would make any song sound wonderful!
So damn good
I agree. I have goosebumps :-)
My favorite Massive Attack song, done by Elbow.
Amazing.
just a masterstroke with this cover song! no settling of Crows here....
a beautiful song, sung with a beautiful voice...magic
OMFG .. I had not heard this one before. Love the original song, but Guy Harvey - the man is a fair God, I swear. That voice brings me to tears every time.

voice of an angel that man...
Not normally a covers fan but it's Elbow quality cover of a beautiful tune
Adore this song & loved this version from day one... Outstanding!
guy- you are a legend! john martin, massive attack covers.... incredible!!!!!!
This is absolutely wonderful, I can't quite get over how amazing the whole band are. D: I love Massive Attack too but this adds a new beautiful element to it, for sure.
Wonderful, resplendent, moving.
probably the best cover of teadrop out there....
this is bloody awesome, just what i needed to hear.
very like this song especially in this version
those eyes look at you and agree that the world's not perfect. but if there is beauty. its in music like this.
yeah man heard this years ago still lovin it.....been a while!
Excellent peaceful cover. Love it
Totally agree with you. Loved the original beyond belief, and didn't want anyone to mess it up by covering it badly.

Fine work, very fine cover
love elbow
love the original song
so wow loved that
Liking this version. Elbow are certainly a distinctive band. Love Guy's voice..
What a beautiful cover. Well done, boys!
Nothing will beat the original but this and Jose Gonzalez's cover I have to say are absolutely brilliant in their own way :)
Anyone ever hear the Newton Faulkner version? Darn good too!
Dimitri Wolfs The Newton Faulkner version was how I found “Teardrop” and put me onto Massive Attack. There are a couple more artists I love and found because of their covers of “Teardrop”. Love the song!
That's dope ❤
Best live band I have ever seen.... and that's saying something. And it was in Wolverhampton for god's sake!
Ah what a pretty thing indeed. lovely.
I think think my neighbour hasn't covered it yet. Probably doing it next weekend though.
Love is a verb. Love is a doing word.
After a week I admit being wrong. Elbow performs outstanding. A better version has surfaced.
great cover!! perfect!!
The only band worthy making this cover!
pure music
..great cover!! All who enjoyed this will love Sneaker Pimps cover of "Hey Do" a traditional folk song covered from an old film, The Wicker man. Check it out, simply beautiful. Well worth the 3 minutes to watch.
I trained Kung fu with the singer from the 'Pimps' in Islington, back in the day... :-)
Radio 1 playing something like this, blimey, talk about a diamond in a turd.
Was going to say diamond in the rough, but this is radio 1 we're talking about.
Magic
Darn it!. This cover is brilliant!
Who else was waiting for a picture of Hugh Laurie to pop up?
Oh wow!
this is epic!
class!!!!
I like this too
pffft talk about amazin'!!
Great cover, the counter-melody is inspired

Sweet.
love this version. but seriously check out the Newton Faulkner one its great
@coltsuperocean10
well said, i could not agree more, R1 used to have an egde to it not anymore, funny though, i listen to talk sport most of the time now too.
CRAIG POTTER!
mce161 you sure got that right!
Yeah, the original was fantastic, couldn´t be better! And this isn´t better or worse, just different yet fantastic
After the first verse, I was thinking that they could do a mash up of this with Mirrorball. Would sound pretty good.
ur a legend
house definately could mock it!!great job by the way.lov elbow
go beardy guy, fabulous
@Futil1ty Maybe is because it means 'bout a disrupted heart and suspended beats.
It 's nice, I like Elbow but the song by Massive Attack is more haunting, witch I like.
The voice of Guy is perfect btw.
@JeramyTheGirl what do u think of Jose's version just out of curiosity I prefer it to Falkners
....3D like this!
oh mamma
If I was Elizabeth Frazer, which I'm not, I'd put a price on Garvey's head for this diabolical shambles. I like Elbow btw.
@MrAggtee ha idk how you think about that but you know i think it makes sense in a light haha
Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
is love a verb? more importantly is it a doing word? last but not least do black flowers blossom?
found an slightly used Elbow *cd at a funky dive used book store....i believe it was Seldom Seen Kid or something/... i took it home with me... teardrops on the fire,.../..yes i stole it, ok

+Roberts Bud cool story dude
great song, here another version, yet by sleepwalker's station...
I love this cover, but I agree that it's completely idiotic to call someone a moron for not liking the voice. It's not exactly Guy Garvey's best singing. Don't go on a rage against me for saying that, it's just opinion.
@superspud94 It's a shame you feel that way, I always thought Garvey's voice MADE the song
It's good but...the original is the best.
suvariboy Jose Gonzalez does a fantastic one too.
***** So does HermitageGreen
Original is good, José González's cover may be better, but Newton Faulkner's cover hands down is the best. Sadly, Guy's version does not stand up to these.
@zaniac1000 Ehhmm, don't know that one! Do you snore it?
Should have been called Elbow Drop :p
make this the new intro for house =D
Somehow they did it better, than Massive Attack. Spellbinding...and well as any of their creations.
@ZelenaBananaa thats my opinion :)
the name says it all....simon hate ley. i think hate is the operative word here.
@wastagwaga Second that!
@zaniac1000 AAAHH....I see.
the sound of collapsed dark satanic mills
Andy Tice high much?
ditto
Love the band, love this song, but the voice is not quite "on" and it is troubling. The BBC live version of Mirrorball proves Garvey has the ability, it was just not quite here.
@stonemermaid u serius ?
@zaniac1000 No, but I know how to whistle! Do you know how to blow?
@zaniac1000 forgive me love....my brain is long gone! That and I'm still waiting for you to tell me your secret drug!
Bell end
sorry have to say i prefer the massive attack version.
What a nerve! Tackling such a latterday classic?
Decent job though, Elbow.
@zaniac1000 What kind of drugs are you on? Remind me NEVER to take that!
this shits all over kneebones cover!
Might be shot for this but leaves Newton for dead!!!!!!!!!
Oh this is a song no one should ever try to do a cover of, massive attack rock and I hate hearing this elbow please do not do it again
I'm sorry , I do love elbow but really not liking this cover at all ...perhaps it could be cos I'm a massive attack fan too . skipping this song :-/
really? i dont hear it
it would be a fairly boring instrumental without any vocals though
