Hogwash. The thermodynamics does not make sense. Absorbant or not, the energy of the water vapor needs to be extracted to reform the hydrogen bonds . This is not a trivial amount of energy. The proposed method of getting the water to actually absorb is flawed. The arid areas that are the intentional deployment area, has very little moisture in the atmosphere. And no. The air does not get more humid in the night. The amount of water the air can hold is just lowered, due to lower temperatures. Yes, it means that you are closer to the dew-point. Some areas pass the dew point altogether and passes into freezing, making all the moisture in the air drop out of the air as a thin, thin layer of frost. If there where enough water in the air for this to be a useful source of water, there would be no need for this device. Trust me.. water from air is a stupid concept. Look up industrial de-humidifiers. There are dessicant types, compressor types, combined types. You ain’t going to get much more efficient than that. And even if this worked perfectly, the size for the damn thing to be of any use would drive up the cost to be no better than hauling water to the drought struck areas.
You should then tell Stanford that they made a terrible mistake making her the head if an engineering department last year! news.mit.edu/2018/evelyn-wang-named-department-of-mechanical-engineering-head-0622 She must be pretty smart to dupe all those researchers and peer reviewers... Maybe you should take her place?
Sword of Tauberg save me from your passive aggressiveness against me. I have not claimed to be smarter than anyone. Pointing out something that is flawed is just that. So. Normally I would not doubt things that comes from reputable universities, but this whole water from air thing is something that comes up again and again, and they all fail due to the reality of thermodynamics. ua-cam.com/video/EGTRX6pZSns/v-deo.html Here is a video from Thunderf00t from 2017, talking about this very project. And MIT and California university are not alone in spinning bullshit like this. The guys and gals over at Xprize are barking up the same damn tree. water.xprize.org/prizes/water-abundance So. Water from air is a stupid concept. Themodynamically it does not make sense. No amount of technology will be able to bend the reality of the huge amount energy required to condense any usable amount of water. The atmosphere does this water from air thing all by itself the places it is favorable for it, in the form of clouds and rain. But the energy flux of the atmosphere is quite mind blowing, and wanting to condense that process down to human size, and force it to happen places it isn’t favorable, is a foolish errant. I urge anyone read this far to look up Thunderf00t and his videos. He can be a bit condescending and repetitive, but he does a great job, doing what he is doing. SCIENCE!
@John Billings External power.... Like. From outside the device. You wouldn't say your laptop or phone runs on external power when running on its battery, not plugged in, would ya? And this video.. It's animated.. So whatever you have or have not seen is not relevant here.
@John Billings ua-cam.com/video/EGTRX6pZSns/v-deo.html Watch the damn video. No. It is not feasible. But please. Be my guest and live off dehumidifier water the rest of your days. Good day sir, (Edit: Corrected a typo)
The "A Solar-Powered Step In The Fight Against Water Scarcity" video is an informative video. Hopefully, it is showing an idea that can ultimately be used as a safe and environmentally contentious or friendly way to help the problem of water scarcity.
news.mit.edu/2018/evelyn-wang-named-department-of-mechanical-engineering-head-0622 She was named a department head at MIT last years; and DARPA, the US Air Force, and Navy have all given her awards over the years. I bet her reputation is better than yours within the field of engineering.
This is so environmentally exploitative. What happens when you suck all of the water out of the air, taking it away from every other plant and animal? You're not the only species on planet Earth. "Humans having access to water" is not a right, it's a privilege of a species that lives in harmony with the Earth. The whole reason that someone regularly lacks access to clean water is that they're a poor fit for that environment. To oversimplify it a bit, just stop breeding out of control as a species and think before you plunder, and everyone will have water.
It’s a brilliant idea that would help humanity, hopefully big corporations won’t buy you out of helping humankind. I’m glad that NPR is sharing this but why they don’t share the crisis happening now in Nicaragua is beyond mine blowing. #sosNicaragua people want freedom of speech and democracy
John Syzlack yes to some but I can’t keep quiet 🤫 about it. Some people fear caravans of people because of skin tone, language and don’t understand why it happens. 50,000 have left Nicaragua in self exile. I know there will be more leaving because the dictator is going to starve the nation
John Syzlack no, you are 100% wrong. I took you for a smarter person but I know you don’t have a clue what the hell you spout out your mouth. Statistically immigrants are the back of the USA 🇺🇸. Statistics show it! Take all immigrants out of the equation and our economy would equal Moldovas. I didn’t cross the border yesterday, many many years back. I smell fear to a better, more hard working people. This is just a start, I can put many more things that statistically beat the lazy, poor white man who was born in the USA but lives in mamas trailer playing Xbox one ☝️.
cue Thunderf00t

@John Syzlack Excuse you
hate to break it to you... when there is drought, there is not a lot of water in the air....
And dehumidifiers are not new lol
If this worked and enough people used it, would it disrupt the water cycle?

And you wonder why people call you fake news?
I love these Joe's Big Idea videos. The animation is great. The content is interesting. Keep 'em coming!
Well at least it’s not a dehumidifier...
What an absurd idea. Arizona resident. NPR; no fact checkers. Science Guy could have made the Physics clear to you over the phone.
How could NPR have fallen for this obvious nonsense? Be more careful with your reputation!

@@justcallmeSheriff Ok but thermodynamics.
chrisrus1965 thermodynamics doesn’t apply in this case
Wouldn't this promote water scarcity >_>
Thank you but no thanks
