Jay, back in the summer of '77, my brother was a Marine, and when on leave, he brought me down to MCAS El Toro, to visit with him for a couple of weeks. At this time, he owned a '73 Triumph GT6, now that car was so COOL. But late Aug. going from the S.F. east Bay Area, down to L.A.,,,,, wow, car being so small with the transmission right between him and I... and that inline 6-cyl... wow, no A/C, windows down doing about 65 mph, (speed limit then:55mph) Sweltering Hot, but so cool, Kansas , on the radio, "Carry on O' Wayward Son".............. it was so real!

      Hahaha great joke
TR6 is a nice car I shot one for the channel but I don’t know what happened to the footage so I’ll probably have to do it again I couldn’t believe how tight they are. They’re very similar to this car. The only differences is if you’re over 6 foot tall and you push the clutch in when you’ve released the clutch, your knee is kind of in the bottom of the dashboard or at least that was the experience I had when I pushed the clutch in

This ain't a channel, it's a community. Anyone who disagrees needs to NOT watch these videos. Why watch it if they don't like it? I'd drive the right-hand-drive version of the Midget so my dominant hand is on the wheel at all times. Memories. Dude, you’re killing me with these evocative uploads bringing me back. I went to college, 74 - 78, and this MG was one of the primo cars for summer break. I remember too that the Triumph convertible was also greatly envied. I remember hearing about appalling problems with the electrical wiring on all cars British but it’s been a long time and the memory ain’t what it used to be. Another car which was very, very popular was the Peugeot. 504? Ugly car but it really had a following. Hope you’re well. 👍

Oh, how I lusted after the Midget... even though physically I could have never comfortably fit in one. Horrendously unreliable, the MG Midget had electrical gremlins like many British cars of the era, and mechanically not too reliable either. But, but I still wanted the car when it was out.. and I dreamed, wanting to drive it like in a Get Smart opening credit. My choice between the first 3 cars would have been the beetle convertible, the only vehicle reliable enough and large enough for me.

He really loved that car, but stored it so long, when he finally went to get it up and running, he looked around, and there were just "NO-WHERE" to fix it. All of the guys who knew about them, and had experience, all died, and retired. So, he GAVE it away. I remember riding in it, it was fun but such a dog. You know they say: "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than to drive a fast car slow".

I kind of want to do a section in the summertime if I can called and you thought your car was fast and drag race against a Prius, I will beat anybody that has a higher 0 to 60 times than 8 1/2 seconds, which doesn’t sound that fast but it’s pretty fast for that car. I can appreciate these for their distinct style. When I was in high school I had a friend that had one that was a 70's model, I'm not sure of the exact model year, but I did ride in it a couple of times that I can remember and it seems that I do remember that it was a bit uncomfortable, and I was probably just under 6' and really thin. I also remember during that same time period, seeing a lot of ads in magazines for the '8😮0 MGB, and the Triumph autos as well, which I thought were all beautiful , but my favorite of the MG model has always been the MGB GT. Also during that time and a couple of years after, my older sister and brother-in-law had a '79 Fiat convertible, that I drove quite a few times and really loved driving, and as much as I love the Fiat, I really dig that cool looking VW convertible!🤩and wouldn't mind owning! In the second, it would be the MGB GT!😎

I have the 75 and can tell you the differences are the Triumph engine, a raised suspension, a RETURN to the squared rear wheel arches, the third wiper, a notch cut in the rear to facilitate the new bumper and some minor changes to the front fenders to make them fit the new bumpers.
All of these changes were made to make the car compatible with the US market.
The Mark IV or 1500 is the red haired stepson of MG’s. Like Rodney Dangerfield it doesn’t get any respect.
All that said the basic shell is the same as the earlier car. Leyland only made the changes because they had to in order to export the car.
With these cars changes were incremental and only occurred when old stock ran out so build date not model year is the thing if you are trying to research a Leyland vehicle.
Even the 1500 is a blast to drive though. I love mine.

      @@What.its.like.
My pleasure. I wish I bought the car when I was in my teens. The British were very interested in keeping production costs down, so the car remained basically the same. In fact you can backdate a mark IV all the way back to a mark I with wrenches and only a real expert on the car will notice. The early cars had plexiglass sliding screens rather than roll up windows, but the doors are the same size on all marks and are interchangeable.
The drive train was off the shelf and not developed for the car. The idea was to make a sports car that a working class person in austerity Britain could afford and be small enough to fit in a bike shed.
If you understand the thinking behind the design the car doesn’t seem so quirky.
I’m not a small guy, and I will admit the car is not designed to be driven for hours at a time. I have done it, but it really is optimized for joy rides of an hour or less.
The one real failure was not putting an overdrive in the car. At 50mph you are in direct drive and the engine is revving at 3500 rpm. It gets loud. The best upgrade for the car is an overdrive. Kits exist, but being a cheap car most opt for a bigger car like an MX5 rather than upgrading the transmission.
They are a great entry level classic and the prices are very stable. This is both good and bad because it is an easy in but the cars never become valuable like say a Mustang.

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  7 місяців тому

It’s crazy that Mustangs became valuable because they made so many of them. That’s the beauty of them really is there so many out there and they make every single part for that car so you could build one from the ground up if you wanted to.

Well the factory in Abington makes almost every component including complete body shells for the MGB and Midget. There are a few gaps such as only the wider sized transmission hump being available.
T series, Spitfires, TR-6 all are well supported with nearly every component still in low volume production. I believe most of the jugs had been destroyed at the parent plant but found in Ireland where the cars were built at a branch plant.
Beetles were built in the millions (I had one) and they are valuable. A Lada Signet - I bought one for the price of a case of beer in the late 80’s - is now regularly demanding 10k. I bought one for $25.00 and at the time a case of beer was just a bit under $24.00.
It is all about supply demand and maybe nostalgia.
A friend of mine commented how much he loved my Lada because that is the car he learned to drive standard in.
I taught a lot of guys on that car. Well why not? The transmission was tractor tough. If you crunched a gear you couldn’t break anything. It was crude but it had wipers on the headlamps, probably the best heater ever, and driving to Petawawa with all my gear for Battle School I got it up to 155 km/h on a very flat stretch of the 401.

I purchased a 1975 MG Midget, brand new, right off the dealer showroom. Mine had the sun visors as they were standard. I imagine, somewhere in the life of your friend's car, the visors were lost. I also previously owned a 1972 chrome bumper a Midget also purchased new. I fell in love with the mustard color car and ordered both of my Midgets in that color. My earlier car had a chrome luggage rack. Both had wired wheels and tonneau covers. In between those two cars 🚗 I had purchased a new British Racing Green 💚 Triumph Spitfire. I liked all three cars 🚗, but preferred my chrome bumper Midget. Ah! Those were the carefree days of my 20s. Then all my roadster days ended when I met my wife and we started our family, eventually having 6 children. Now I can only dream of days gone by.

I'd take a Spitfire if that were an option; it looks better and actually feels less crammed together. Still slow though. Maybe a Triumph GT6? For the second group, I'd go with the MGB. Hi Jay!: MG's! I can talk about some MG's! (prepare for a long comment!) The MG midget was a cool inexpensive car to go along with the MGB. The same body style was shared with the later Austin Healey Sprites as well. I ALMOST bought a 1966 AH Sprite, which is pretty much the same as the MKII Midget with a little different grille treatment and badging. But I really didn't need THREE British cars at the same time!! The interior of the Midget you show is quite similar to the 1977 MGB that I once owned. We called the MGB's and Midgets of that era the rubber bumper cars. The bumpers are really more like a rubber substance than a plastic. Also these cars have roll-up windows and are not "technically" roadsters. In fact the body tag on my MGB called the body style a Tourer. The MGB also had those same steering wheel related controls for the three windshield wipers and washer (right side) and the Headlight dimming, turn signals and HORN. Yes, you pressed in on the stalk to beep the horn!! A VERY similar rubber pad is in the center of the steering wheel, but is just a pad. I loved the underhood shots showing not only the brake cylinder but the clutch one as well! (had to replace one on my '71 MGB GT) they worked just as well as the mechanical clutches. The MK IV Sprites did use the same engine as the Triumph Spitfire, the earlier marks having different versions of the BMC A engne. The luggage rack on the boot (British for trunk) lid was an option. Had one on My 'MGB Tourer. So that leads us to the WYR's #1 I would go with the Midget. #2 MGB Tourer! My 1977 was identical to the 1975 you show including the color! I REALLY liked the MGB GT too, though!!

I think a 1970 MGB might be better (I think power was down by 1975 on most of these cars)
notably Steve Prefontaine was killed when his (don't know what year) turned over on him,I think 1975,he may have been trying to avoid another car coming round a curve on Prefontaine's side of the narrow road
at the time he was blamed for supposedly being intoxicated but I think there might have been some "politics" involved -- (Tex Maule article in "Sports Illustrated" ?)

I'm rather deaf so I turn the CC on, and sometimes that gets me a laugh. Near the beginning of the video when you say "Morris Garages" the CC reads "Morris Grudges" 😅 which I'm sure some MG owners had after replacing the same electrical component for the tenth time. I also noticed in the specs instead of "MPG" it reads "MPH". I know 56HP ain't a lot but they only got 25-30 MPH out of it? LOL 🤣
WYR I'll take the VW simply because there are so few of them around, but the Fiat is a lovely car. And I've always wanted an MGB GT. Sadly the Federal safety bumper requirements ruined the good looks of all the MG's. The MGB has a more shapely look, but TBH I like the simple straighter lines of the Midget almost as much. And these later MG's had lots of build quality problems (as did all of the regular English cars of the time). Still, the Midget was cheap and that sold a lot of them what did sell. Toward the end of the era dealers here were desperate to sell, so much that one practically forced me to test drive one even after I told them I had just started a new job and couldn't get financing for some time yet because of that. Being young I spent my funds on fun so I never got that car, but I did like driving it even as wimpy as the engine was. These cars require constant "fettling" as the Brits call it so you either learned to fix it yourself or you got rid of it. Darn few mechanics here of the time understood SU carbs (Skinners Union is what SU stands for). and the average driver here was even more lost, never checking the damping oil or changing it for the different seasons. And rust- OMG they were almost as bad as Italian cars for that. But still, very fun cars to drive and being relatively cheap on the collectors market I may one day be able to pick up one in rough shape and bring it back to it's visual and driving glory after throwing out the engine, trans, and everything electrical so I can drive it more than fix it 😎

The 1975 MG Midgets were also plagued by the single carb. It was a U.S. emissions move. A smart move would be to get a Weber DGV downdraft carb kit from Moss Motors and install it. But, I would probably not suggest doing anything to a rustbucket car like that unless it gets a no-holds-barred ground-up restoration.

I had a white 1973 Mark III Midget. It was a fun car and I never had any trouble with it. I loved sawing away on the little shifter. You could put the top up or down at a red light since you could easily reach both latches. Mine didn't have a jack so I carried a little bottle jack. I would have to lift the car to get the jack underneath it. I lived in Massachusetts at the time and it was scary to drive it in the ice. I am 6'1" and I could fit in it, but my knee would hit the corner of the radio housing where the hazard light switch is. Sometimes it would get so sore I'd stick a winter hat between my knees and the housing. One day a larger guy asked me for a ride and when he saw the car he didn't think he could fit in but he did. It was cozy but he said it had more room than his friend's Corvette. I also gave a ride to 2 guys once. We were packed in! I would rather have the 1975 Midget in the first scenario and the 1975 MGB GT in the second.

It’s a weird way of getting in the car and then you have to bring the rest of you in
Really funny story there is a Pantera in the pipeline that is the only car that ever got stuck in. I couldn’t get out of that car once I got in it I was in it and I’m not a claustrophobic kind of person but I was getting there don’t get me wrong. I’ve been in some other cars that are really hard to get out of this one. I couldn’t open the door very far because it was parked next to another car and that was my issue , I couldn’t get my legs out of the pedalbox

Even as a teen, this was too small. I preferred the B. But by the time I could actually own cars, the MG was gone, and while the Miata (spiritual and better successor) hadn't hit yet, the Japanese had run away with this market. 240Z of course was first, but turned into a plushbottom with the 280ZX and so the 1st gen RX-7 reinvented the segment all over again. BL just had no money to modernize or improve anything, and made questionable development choices when they did scrape something up, and the labor situation - ugh. Britain was arguably the first nation to destroy its own auto industry - though the US seems to following down that road (driven by different factors, but still). WYR: 1) the 124 every day - timeless design and much more car 2) MGB GT - utility and civilized. Song - Take it on the Run REO Speedwagen?

I had a 1979 Triumph Spitfire and it was slightly larger inside than the Midget/B but was a handful keeping it running correctly.
