    When Royce Gracie made his comeback fight against Matt Hughes... Not only did he get beat, he got beat in the only area he was known for. That was like learning Santa isn't real. I’ve said this so many times. Volk took the fight because he’s a company man. There is no way that the fact he could “save the card and please his fans” didn’t play into his decision, on top of his unshakeable confidence.

      @branlopgar 8 місяців тому

      A bad loss, most of the times, can and will destroy a legacy, though.
      Sean Strickland is a good example of someone who survived it, but that's because he was seen as cannon fodder for Poatan to begin with. But Askren losing to Masvidal, Masvidal himself getting KO'd by Usman, Usman getting KO'd by Edwards, those were legacy changers. Jose Aldo was champion again, but it was until recently that his legacy wasn't defined by losing to Conor in 13 seconds, and Eddie Alvarez's legacy is still defined by getting punked by Conor, finishing Gaethje, Chandler and Poirier be damned.

    I mean to be fair I think taking a massive risk that doesn't pay off isn't necessarily a failure, especially in a someone like Volks case who had a legitimate chance of winning with a full camp (And in many eyes won the first fight) but in case the opportunity never presented itself again he took the fight on 11 days notice, got off the couch and into the octagon and got understandably handled.
    Imo we need more Volkanovskis in the MMA world and especially boxing, too many people ducking and avoiding others until they are either mandatory, or just never take the opportunity. People will laugh at Volk and Canelo when they lose in understandable circumstances and then cry when no one takes the slightest risks and calls boxing/MMA boring... like wtf do you want?

    I don't think Volk's image has been tarnished that badly, he lost to the champ of the weight class above him twice, that's not the same as losing to someone his size. And due to his height it's not like he's a weight bully or anything, he's at a significant size disadvantage against Islam.

    • @izharulhaqtruthrevealed1185
      @izharulhaqtruthrevealed1185 8 місяців тому +4

      It's not height bully but weight my friend,
      He is solid 200lbs and even 2wks to this fight he is 180lbs imagine and he's competing 145lbs. If don't call him weight bully I wonder who will be called.
      The guy has reach advantage over Islam too and his height is also a factor in his favor making it hard to control on ground,
      YET Islam destroyed him perfectly.
      Beating volk even 1 day notice in 3min is not for toddlers.

    Number 1: If the UFC was a legitimate promoter in a legitimate sport, a champion taking on a number 1 contender would be the bare minimum for not being stripped of the championship, not a "mistake". I suppose in a "sport" where champions have no requirements or standards, ALL title defenses are mistakes...

    Nah, volks risk definitely paid off. He went up against a heavier guy twice and once on really short notice… beat max Holloway and made him look like an amateur in their last fight. Definitely proved he’s one of the best of all time. And he’s still going strong. I honestly think he could beat islam if they had a third.

      You, just like so many other Jon Jones fans who are not very smart, ONLY looking at official results and not giving a damn about narratives or appearances. Ngannou 'lost' a decision to Fury that many thought he won (Jones actually has gotten more than his fair share of controversial wins), when he was NEVER expected to compete with let alone arguably beat Fury. Ngannou won in every sense of the word against Fury, he massively raised his stock and name value, expanding his options further.
      Dana White and the UFC fumbled the bag with Francis Ngannou.

    The fact people were talking like Volk actually had a better chance of winning that second fight with Islam when he was going into it is still crazy to me. Idc who you are you don't have higher odds of winning a short notice fight then you would the fight when you had a full camp of preparation. I didn't understand how they didn't understand his odds were much worse that second time.
    He even won the polls before their second fight on who people thought would win which was crazy. Charles would have had a better chance to beat Islam that night than Volk would have because Charles had a full camp to prepare. People just thought Volk was superhuman I guess.
    I kept saying if he wasn't able to do it with a full camp plus home advantage it was near impossible for him to beat Islam in Abu Dhabi with two weeks notice when he hadn't been training (which is why he was slower than normal) like how could anyone think he had a better chance just because "he's seen Islam fight now and can come up with a solution" not with two weeks he can't duh.
