  • From the Pitch section of the grade 5 ABRSM music theory test.
The question gives you 2 pieces of music and you just need to check if it has been transposed correctly and add a tick or a cross to each box. Transposing is used to shift music up or down into a different key. This can be useful if you are playing with another person whose instrument is in a different key to yours so you can shift either their or your music up or down to match the other! It is also useful for singers who need to adjust their music into a key that fits with their vocal range.
These days there's a lot of software out there that can do this for you - but I think it's still a useful skill to have and will deepen your understanding of notation.

Thank you so much! Ever since I found your UA-cam channel, I have finally understood many concepts. 😌It's always been hard to manage my schoolwork and theory. You've got a new subscriber!♥ (Especially at 2:18, that part always confused me!)

Not sure what the right answer is for the key signature. Also, if the key signature is wrong, and you answered that bit AFTER going down a minor third with the notes, then maybe the note is a sharp or flat. I’m new to this topic, so perhaps you can help please.

      Hi again! :)
So, if you scroll along to 2:42, that's where I explain about the key signature part, let me know if you still need help on this?

@@KeyNoirApologies, I see my question wasn’t that clear: I was really asking whether when checking the notes, one takes into account the key signature shown OR the key signature that it should be (if that turns out to be wrong). I now realise it’s the one shown. Thank you
