      @@abracadaverous Yes. In fact, it would break my heart to sound ugly like that. Realistically, it is not something to be proud of, unless one likes to sound bad or encourage people to laugh at it - which she did. (Think Florence Foster Jenkins and that woman was laughed at for her voice and bad singing) If you disagree, that's your choice to remain in your echo chamber. Anyone who thinks that sounds good is unrealistic and needs to take the cotton out of their ears.

      +Alyssa White People tend to laugh at what they're not used to... I remember when I was a kid a show on TV making a joke out of a man with a high countertenor voice, whereas these days people would have admired him for his talent. Maybe people are getting a bit more broad minded and don't always need to put people in little boxes as to what is acceptable or not.

      When you sing this in front of Carol Burnett and other comedians/stars, it's bound to get laughter as well as them being a bit awestruck. Prior to her descending low she demonstrated being able to sing Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. By the way, my daughter can descend this low with consistency, although she obviously spends the majority of her time in the alto/soprano register.

      Apparently, you have perfect pitch, I envy you if u do have it. I am now a 6'5" 320pound male, but from 5th grade until I graduated, I played the clarinet. I was band captain my senior year. My voice is now very, very deep, but my pitch recognition is very poor when I sing. My pitch was damn near perfect on clarinet when I graduated. Our director tuned the band to me for my last two years. I wish I could sing better, but my ear hears high pitches when I should be singing bass or counter bass.

      Btw, I make fun of how low my voice is, but...I digress...I used to make fun...because It was pushed in society that women should not have such low voices - especially, for singing. To be an Alto is/was nothing spectacular. Glad to know not everyone feels that way. At one time I "was" a Soprano.

    I love that the hostess at the end said with deepest empathy that they shouldn't laugh and asked if she minded the audience laughing. What a kind, considerate soul. I personally think this singer was unbelievably talented with such a rare range (AND TONE) housed within one body, but the times were completely ignorant to what were deemed gender norms. In the simplest social understanding, a woman is meant to sing in a higher range and a man is meant to sing lower; anything outside of that was seen as queer or odd and/or funny. I believe the singer laughed with them in a way that a person sort of jeers at oneself as a means to join in on the joke rather than being hurt by being the butt of one. It's not about being butthurt or hyper-sensitive, but appreciating something for its uniqueness rather than poking fun because it's an anomaly. This woman was a talent and a half! I wish at some point, she could have heard gasps of inspired awe and applause rather than cackles and slapping knees.

    This amazing Lady is Mrs. Hallbjörg Bjarnadóttir (b. 11. April 1915 - d. 28. September 1997), an Icelandic singer and entertainer.
    Hallbjörg Bjarnadóttir was a Contralto Profondo with a very wide vocal range from Akranes in Iceland. She was able to sing from Soprano to Bass, but her strongest register was her chest register, which gave her a powerful Tenor/Baritone sound.
    Hallbjörg Bjarnadóttir studied in Denmark, and lived there for a large part of her life. She also lived for a time in the United States. She moved to Iceland in 1992.

      Monteiro Eduardo It is.Low contraltos are ussulay called "female boritone" cuz they sing as low as a male(baritone)

      By pitch standards, she was singing in the baritone registry.

    • @hectormanoueledfaustinebra4279
      @hectormanoueledfaustinebra4279 6 років тому +6

      +Sarah White female baritone is a misnomer.
      I am a very deep toned bass baritone
      A falsetto man isn't an alto, or soprano.

    • @hectormanoueledfaustinebra4279
      @hectormanoueledfaustinebra4279 6 років тому +4

      +Jermaine Elliott
      you then have never heard the voice of a true baritone. Tracy Chapman is an example. Her voice seems rather manly. This great singer has a rather feminine voice compared to Chapman.
      Yet Chapman is a contralto and contrasoprano aka messosoprano

    Goodness! As a contralto, on my best mornings I can sing down to A2, but I certainly don't have any power past C#3. (My tessitura is E3-A4.) She can even do character voices at the end. Do you realize how challenging it is to get that grit and be in tune? Yes, we laugh because it's unexpected (I've seen people laugh their first time hearing Geoff Castellucci or Tim Foust) but we keep listening because it's beautiful. The hostess was so sweet to make sure she's okay with the laughs, although I'm sure that by her age, she gets a kick out of seeing reactions. That slow glissando shows she KNOWS the audience is in awe, and she's milking the shock factor. Love it!

      That's identical to my range. I can bust out an extra octave if I falsetto it.
