Nun, die Menschen haben nichts aus der bösen Vergangenheit gelernt. Aber das Volk wird doch regelrecht den Parteien in die Arme getrieben. Unsere Regierung handelt doch nur im Interesse der Kapitalisten und der Wirtschaft. Grenzen müssen immer sein, auch in Demokratien, es darf keine Willkür entstehen. Andere Länder können sich ein Beispiel von Deutschland nehmen, nachahmen. Wir dürfen dennoch nicht unsere Werte, die 70 Jahre gewachsen sind mir und dir nichts einfach so verschenken. Klar, Solidarität sollte immer bleiben. Aber was jetzt im Moment mit Deutschland passiert ist auch nicht der richtige Weg. Wir können nicht die Welt retten. Der einzigste und schnellste Weg, auf allen Seiten keine Waffenlieferungen mehr, der Krieg hat sein Ende und alle bleiben dort wo sie auch wirklich hingehören. Das ist so einfach und für alle das Beste - keiner spricht und handelt darüber. Dafür sollten alle auf die Straße gehen!!!!
Ehrenfried Pulver Ich selbst bin weiblich, türkischer Herkunft und stamme aus einer säkularen Akademikerfamilie, die bereits 1969 hier eingewandert ist. Ich selbst bin in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen ..... und habe ebenfalls studiert. Leider werden positive Beispiele der Migration / Integration im Alltag kaum wahrgenommen, eben WEIL wir regelrecht assimiliert sind. Ich selbst werde oft nur noch an meinem Namen als Person nicht-deutscher Herkunft erkannt. Äusserlich merkt man mir das nicht an und sprachlich auch nicht. Trotzdem ist das, was Frau Merkel bezüglich der Flüchtlingspolitik getan hat, tatsächlich falsch, denn im Gegensatz zu uns türkischstämmigen Menschen, die (wenigstens zum Teil) von der Ideologie ATATÜRKS geprägt wurden, haben viele Araber nichts als Religion kennengelernt. Das kann eventuell noch zu grösseren Problemen führen.

I find it fascinating how some things lose so much in translation, even when the translation is simple, direct, unequivocally word for word: "Ich hab noch einen Koffer in Berlin" evokes such nostalgia, whereas "I still have a suitcase in Berlin" is just a cold statement of fact. Likewise, I doubt that "a cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces" can be translated into any other language without losing all is nostalgia-evoking value.

Perhaps you have to look/listen more carefully, but I think it'd be the same in English, or in any language when there is poetry involved. The statement is pure fact, but the way she sings it, along with our own experiences, adds the feeling to the statement.
I'm American so my native tongue is English, but I've been fluent in French and Italian, as well as reasonably fluent in German. (Not that I spoke any of them flawlessly; just that I could speak and understand them without having to translate them into English in my head.) I'm sure you've heard many people say how harsh German sounds and how melodious French sounds; it's also very apparent how different the national character of each country is . . . though we all have the same emotions, we express them differently. "Kiss my ass," in English is mildly vulgar'; its German equivalent "Lech mich am Arsch," is so guttural it sounds ten times worse . . . to me. (Perhaps that's why they don't even try to translate some songs, but just write entirely different lyrics with a whole different meaning: "Que Reste-t-il de Nos Amours"/ "I Wish you Love" and "Somos Novios" / "It's Impossible") But all this is just my personal opinion and I've been known to be wrong more than once. I could another three hundred pages on what "McArthurPark" MEANS to me. I appreciated your comment. Best of Luck

I'm a polyglot myself, and grew up with two languages, and learned others with time. Like you, I am an American. However, credentials and the rest of this feels to me a little besides the point (with all due respect). What I meant is that I do not believe it's a language barrier--at least, not in the way you're saying. I think it has to do more with poetic language in this case. I think talking about lip stains on cigarettes and the suitcase in Berlin can easily create the same sentiment in almost-direct translation (at least into English). To state it shortly, for I've typed a good deal: I did not feel that those were good examples. I understand more figurative language, like something you'd find in high literature, or even some German rap or other music, being difficult (that, of course, cannot be translated word for word), but this? It seems straightforward enough, and that we have plenty of examples in English that exhibit the same kind of implied emotion, worded in a similar manner. I agree with your comments on the changes made in translation. I don't always agree, though, with the changes made, or that changes are necessary in all the cases I've seen. A recent example I can think of is "Granny's Funeral". It's just me, but I think it's a bit duller than ""Adieu Berthe - L'enterrement de mémé"
***** No argument, just want to say I wasn't giving "my credentials"; I just wanted to let you know I do actually speak the languages, so I have "some" emotional feel for the words; they're not just words I learned from a book in high school; but I did not "grow up" with a second language, so I'm sure my knowledge is no where near as deep as yours. It just seems to me some expressions are much more poetic in one language than in another, but it could be just because they've retained a "foreign" flavor to me; the simplest example might be 'Laisse-moi devenir l"ombre de ton chien" as opposed to "let me be the shadow of your dog" in "Ne Me Quite Pas. " The French is much more powerful to me, whereas "the shadow of your hand" and "the shadow of your shadow" have the exact same emotional resonance for me. Maybe it's just the fact that they're still "foreign" to me that gives them a gravitas that wouldn't be there if I spoke both languages equally well. Anyway, thanks for the input. I don't know which other language you grew up with and you don't have to continue this conversation, but I wonder if you're familiar with my all-time favorite song, Kurt Weill's "Surabaya-Johnny." Of course Lotta Lenya's interpretation is universally recognized as sheer genius (I think), but aside from that the song just doesn't work for me in any other language than German. But there could well be an unconscious bit of pretension on my part; I don't know. Thanks for the discussion. I have to get back to trying to learn Russian now. It's not going well.
