Great video, Do you know why the Pilgrim crash into the bank, do you know if they got it off? I slip next to a pilgrim 43 very nice boat. Your killing this trip and the video editing is top notch
They did get it off, and there was no damage! I should have added that update into the video. The captain told us that he dropped his phone and when he looked up he was headed straight for the bank. Fortunately everybody and the boat was okay!
I know the Eire Canal System having spent 20 years living and boating on the Great Lakes. Very well done young man. wishing you fair skys and following seas.
Been boating for 40 years. Retired and still own a 44’ SeaRay I’ve had for 20 years. I’ve done maintenance for over 25 years at a thousand slip marina. I totally relate to what you’re doing but envy your age because you have a lifetime of boating still ahead of you. I always wanted to work delivering boats but just never got the opportunity. Wish you the best in your adventures.
Fantastic videos. I hope you can return to the Erie Canal for a real vacation.👍 You and your Dad are so lucky to have this time together. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Probably the best free vacation I ever had and got to share it with my son and watch in awe, pride, and total confidence as he safely and skillfully navigated us through the maze, lol!
I was up in Corning for Thanksgiving at my sons house , (Circa 1896) , I spent all my life crusing on Chesapeake Bay, now live in Lewes, DE on Delaware Bay. When he moved up there I had to rethink my cruising grounds. I saw that Pilgrim at Saint Michaels last October. Nice older couple, said the boat was very comfortable. I drooled over it ! Will be up for the next canal festival, meantime I'm practicing my canal chanty's.
I have to tell you, Gus. I have really enjoyed watching your journeys so far. I came across your original trip on episode 2 and have been following ever since. It's great to see someone jump head first into a dream. Looking forward to upcoming content while you travel through a piece of history. Safe travels, cheers from Iowa!
Same here, I wish I could have recorded some of my "adventures" in the old days. They would have to be "heavily" edited though. At 77 I can now live vicariously through, Gus. Rock on, Dude.
So nice to see this. I took the canal for granted and never appreciated it. Growing up right next to the canal outside Syracuse I just used it as a bike path and short cut to a state park.. Thank you for these videos!
Wow that boat was so stuck. Bummer. I love watching your videos Scott. I've been watching since the beginning. I live on a 36 foot Trojan tri cabin. On the Columbia River in Oregon.
Hey Brother, I have been watching your show since wanting to restore my own boat. You have been inspiring. Anyway, part of what inspired me to buy a boat was having to watch all of these beautiful boats go by while hanging off of the rock at Moss Island ( Lock 17). I've been climbing here for 20 years. Keep up the great videos. If you decide to do the loop, I'll get you on the rock and we can go to the Erie Canal Museum. - Cheers
I heard on your Florida to Maine videos that you had done the Erie Canal, so I had to check this out as I live in the Utica area. My wife works across the street from Lock 20 so I watch boats come and go all the time when I stop by. I work only a couple miles from that dock in Rome. Little Falls area is absolutly gorgeous. I'm always wanting to be on the water when I drive by it. BTW... Rome is a high point in the Canal system and where Clinton started digging the Erie canal as it was an old portage from the Mohawk River to the Wood River, connecting Albany and the Hudson valley to the Great Lakes basin.
I'm sure it was already mentioned and I might missed what was said but when was this actually filmed? I haven't been in NY since I moved to AZ 6 yrs back but I just know it ain't that green in mid November and either it's closed already or close to closing for the winter at this time of year
Why did you not show the flight in Waterford NY ? It is the highest lift in the shortest distance in the world. You went through 5 locks with an average 30 foot lifts within 3 to 4 miles. I have gone on the trip your taking great trip.
Thank you for watching! Some of the canal is no wake, especially as you get further west. Check this link out for all of the speed limits for the different sections of the canal. www.canals.ny.gov/boating/speedlimits.html
I own a 1996 Albin 32+2. Not much different from the 1997 32+2. The 97 has extended hull under the platform & more HP. Single 370 Cummins vs a 315HP in the 96. Fantastic boat for the cruising couple. Dead easy to single hand also. Know something about the Pilgrim also. Most likely around a 1986 build powered by a single Westerbeke W100 6 cyl, naturally aspirated. Great motor. Had one in a 1986 Albin 27. The Pilgrim has a draft of only 2' 6" making it one great coastal cruiser.
Thanks for the memories. I just did this trip this spring. Brought up our new Beneteau 40 from Hilton Head Island, SC to the North Channel. Our favorite stop was Sylvan Beach. Really neat town and really enjoyed Eddie's Restaurant. We also came out at Buffalo and stepped up our mast at Dale's Marine Service where the staff and stay were a lot of fun.
Love these videos! Quick question- Do you pay fees to use the locks? How does it work to use them? id imagine you call them on the radio to let them know youre coming, other than that, im clueless. side note- funny i was just looking at the map for places to bring my boat in NY state and i was checking out lake oneida. Then you mention it in the vid. cool!
Neat video. How long until you get to Lock 34 and Lock 35? My friend works for the New York State canal department here in Lockport and he said they are getting ready to drain the canal in the next couple weeks or so
@@chrishackett554 Thanks. Always wanted to travel the canal since learning of it in elementary school. Found out about the great loop almost 30 years ago and planned to do it when I retired. I have since retired and though I still dream of the trip, each year brings less chance of it happening.
@@tbirdracefan the canal way path is now open too. It’s a multi use bike and hiking path that runs along the canal from Buffalo to Albany. We also have bucket list to do the loop. Good luck!
Hey Ron, this boat did well when it came to not sucking stuff up. Typically I check the strainer every morning before starting the engine, or if we passed through any areas with a lot of small debree.
7:45 something even crazier…. I live in Buffalo New York and have my hole life. We were floating in the outer Buffalo Harbor at about 1am we watched this 40 Sundancer come flying out the inner harbor on plane had to be doing 35 if not more. Watching the light go across the outer harbor as if they were already on the open lake. Kept watching thinking the lights were going to slow down and never did. Went from full speed to dead stop in the snap of a finger. 2 seconds later you hear this ungodly crack crashing sound. This group of drunk people came flying out the inner harbor full speed right into the brake wall. Idk forgot it was there or something. I was on my 21 foot Maxum Sport so I hammered down towards them. Got there and they were just about coming to. Dazed, confused, trying to take in what just happened. One person was almost on the bow. Like half on the bow half on the dash. They wanted to abandon ship. Wanted to just hop on my boat and this other fishing boat that pulled up but. I pretty much said “what are you nuts” have you checked if you were taken on water. Have you accessed the damage…. They were taken on fast. Got them to get the bilge pump on tossed them a line pulled them off the wall. Flexed all 200 plus HP of my Sport to get it off the wall to with a 21 pitch on the out drive. Got them to the inner harbor. Then they were going to abandon ship there at the dock. So again I’m like what are you nuts.. do you have a trailer truck or anything??!! Found out trailer was up river got them to get the trailer. We pretty much beached the boat at the ramp. The trailer got to the ramps and we were able to get it on the trailer witch was a lot harder than what it sounds like right here and now. Took 3 trucks to pull that boat out the water.... There was gashes all down the side of the boat. Big hole in the front and a huge hole in the back. Could have fit a 12 pack through the hole in the back. lol dude gave me $100 bucks for getting his boat out the water and helping them. All with out the cops being involved to. I wish I was able to get some pictures but this was way before camera phones. It was the age of disposable cameras lol.
I have been to buffalo breaking ice and have been to erie pa tied off to the dock that everyone circles in their cars meat several females there also lol
Just so you know. I've lived in the Mohawk Valley most of my life. We don't call it the Erie Canal. We call it what it is, the MOHAWK RIVER. And just so you know, the river is shut down mainly because it freezes over in the winter. They all use the locks for flood control. Wouldn't want any SH1THOLE areas near ALBANY flooded in the spring.
as a water fanatic, now 77.old surfer and sail boat master in Australia, your canals look too polluted for swimming and fishing, blasting around at high speed ,noisy powered motors is quickly boring, beautiful scenery, quiet sunsets, strumming stringed instruments, singing together, wine and cheese, steak, salad vegi finger food. Boat recovery should be left to the professionals. Snapping roaps and cleats breaking off can kill.

Wonder if his steering broke why he run ashore ? How far icw go up & down east coast or go inland too??
I run the Erie Canal Boat Company, the kayak place just past the liftbridge, in Fairport, Id love to hear your impressions of the community.
did you consider going up lake champlain, into the st. lawrence, lake ontario and the welland canal to lake Erie, instead of the Erie? just wondering

Do you have to pay to use the lock system?
This year it was free, in past years there's been a very reasonable fee. Under $100 for the season.
