When I first heard, "Can I come in?", it made me think of vampires asking to have a window opened so they can come in. I live in Mt. Pleasant, MI, and believe me, "You" cannot come in...ever! This and The Zetland Hotel both leave me feeling that there are various levels of meaning and that I might get something more each time I listen. Wonderful work on both stories. Enjoy your time off knowing that you have inspired deep thoughts within us.

This is SO PERFECT. I really feel like you just can't find stories written like this anymore......those that could take place anytime and small town anywhere, but somehow still feel like a simpler time, and play on our simple human fears because of that. I love it.

I'm listening to this one again tonight as I fall asleep. The description of the village at the beginning brings me back to my childhood. I grew up in a tiny mountain village of around 1,100 (in Southern California, of all places). Tiny town in a box canyon, with a single road in or out. We had a two quaint general stores (down to one now), one restaurant, a Christian camp (which took about about half of the land within the village), and a real estate office. The oldest building in town wasn't nearly as old as the one described in the story, but was a single-room stone schoolhouse built in the 19th century. Our town was so backwater that we didn't even have a stop light. We had bears on our streets and in our yards every night, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, etc. It was literal anarchy. The sherriff's deputy patrolled maybe 16 hours a week witiin the town limits and if you called the police, it could take up to an hour for a response. So yeah, when I hear stories like this one, it always brings back memories of growing up in that weird little place. I've got a few ( *true* ) stories that would fit in on this channel. Maybe I should use it as a background for some creepy short stories that I could send to my favorite UA-cam channel. In fact, I think I might do just that. It's been a while since I've produced anything worthwhile creatively.

Hi, I hope this isn't too intrusive, and you don't have to answer if it is! Did you live in Forest Falls? I never lived there, but I would visit there a lot with friends when I lived in Southern California. There are probably other towns with similar traits, but the description of the box canyon, the one road in and out, the Christian camp, the stone schoolhouse, and the bears and mountain lions roaming around at night all fit with my memories of Forest Falls. And I guess it may sound kind of silly, but one of the reasons my friends and I kept going back there was because we always felt it was a weird, uncanny sort of place. We never actually stayed overnight, though. I still sometimes wonder if we would have seen more if we had. (Some of the totally "prosaic" stories I heard there were scary on their own. Like residents being encouraged to lock their doors when they left their houses because of bears opening unlocked doors and rummaging through people's kitchens for food. Or boulders falling into people's backyards when the river flooded.)

It's just my opinion, but I think your narration is excellent and you don't really need the additional 'voices' doing some of the lines. It sort of pulled me out of the story every time it happened. But thank you so much for putting these stories here. Fantastic site.

Very fun indeed!! And unusually well read, even for I. Gordon. Glad the poor bastard managed to get his car started again. Seemed quite an imaginative chap for a salesman. Parallel dimensions and whatnot. (He even expected to hear insects and birds on a late winter's evening! ;)

I think of this story around Christmastime. Have you read any Cormac MacCarthy, Ian? Blood Meridian is right up your alley. Its villain, Judge Holden, is the most terrifying figure in American literature, in my opinion. Became my favorite of all time after reading it recently.
