After 38 years of listening to Laibach, I discovered that Milan Fras, like Garbo, can also smile. Laibach is one of the few and rare creative groups presently active. They manage to invent themselves time after time. They are a group of brilliant minds.
I usually don't like when someone else is singing in Laibach, but I admit this time Milan has a serious competition on screen. What a brilliant, creepy video.
Always loved their sense of humor. I think my favorite part is the very end when everyone relaxes and you get a quick glimpse of everyone being "human" and casual right before it cuts to black.
At 1:50 the girls sing in german I think. As far as I can understand them they are singing" Auf der grünen Ziegenweide, wo ein Gut der Hirten war" which means "On the grean goat meadow where there was an estate of the herders". There's also a german chorus in between: "Schafe können sicher weiden wo ein guter Hirte wacht" meaning The sheep can safley graze where a good shepard lives/wakes/is watching out. It's basically the theme of the video as well and important to the deconstructed fascist theme of the song. This song is about the type of love greeks call agape- the love a god has for his people- a universal caring unconditional love that dictators try to imitate for the propagandistic imagery that is used to indoctrinate and sooth citizens of fascist states. The song is making use of the melody and german lyrics of J. S. Bachs's May the sheep safley graze. The melody is quite similar to lonley goatherd, possibly its original inspiration and Bach's somber melody is musically more prominent in this version than the actual sound of music theme giving this its more mellow vibe. I think there is also a melodic reference to dueling banjos by arthur smith which overlaps musically quite well.
I like the subtle acting going on @ 2:48. I think it's a brilliant use of the Kuleshov effect. You see the camera focus on the men's faces and then the girls marching away with their backs to us. No matter the silly dance and the smiles on everyone's faces, these little subtleties make it creepy af. You start questioning the shepherd and the hunter's motives. What are the little subtleties in the Sound of Music, that we did not see.
Extraordinary production! But I guess "LAIBACH have shared a new track from their eagerly awaited album..." should have been "LAIBACH have shared a new track from their already legendary album...." At least, that was what I first read.
"High on a hill is a lonely goatherd." Somewhere in a remote place a sole herder watches over his flock (innocent children). The setting is peaceful and they are happy and alike (cheerful, choreographed dancing). Meanwhile a hunter is observing them from afar. The atmosphere suddenly and briefly changes as the picture inverts. (Singing) "sheep can safely graze while the good herder guards". The herder guides his scared and reluctant flock towards the approaching hunter. The both men greet each other and shake hands. The herd keeps following their herdsman. The hunter is now amidst them. He dances along and mimics their moves but also introduces some of his own. The music gains a looming undertone while the hunter glances at us with an accomplished look. "Odl lay hoo hoo"
I think the herder and the hunter in this video actually arrange an agreement or deal. The herder selling out his herd to the hunter. Personally I think the imagery is calling out that those that are supposed to watch over our kids are often the ones selling them out. And yea, like the other commenter said, this song is totally calling out human trafficking.
If you know the song from the Sound of Music and how it's used in the musical & film. The Lonely Goatherd as a song is exactly what Laibach's depicting here. This cover and the video are pulling the innocuous veneer off of this usually family friendly song to show you that the song is pure pedo fantasy. They're calling out one of the most cherished musicals & films of all time for its undercurrent of pedophilia and dressing up that pedophilia as wholesome.
