- No indication of worn rings. Leak down and compression were good!

One thing that you have to be careful with is the oil level meaning don't overfill the engine with oil, after I took my dads GSV190 powered lawnmower for a mow it started burning oil when I let it sit for a while & it began to blow blue smoke & that's after a rebuild.
I honed the cylinder out & replaced the rings,I filled it up with a bit more than the recommended dry refill which is 550 mLs because it didn't seem to register as full on the dipstick.
I got it to the full level with 600-650 mLs of oil but I couldn't rely on the dipstick, last night I did an oil change which removed the wear deposits from the run in process & I removed 500mLs (about 18 Oz's) of oil.
I refilled it with about 350 mLs (12 Oz) of oil which came almost all of the way up the dipsticks crosshatch region so I added another 50 mLs of oil which brought it up to the 400 mL (13 Oz) mark which is pretty much full.
I started the engine up this morning & there was no smoke but I will let it sit for a while to make sure that the overfilling was the cause of the oil burning issue.
I dug up more detailed service information for that engine & Honda said that the dry refill capacity is 0.5 litres but the service refill capacity is 0.35-0.4 litres !
Great information. Thanks for sharing!
Good work Ken, thanks for sharing the info with everyone. 👍🏼
hope that helps john you have had had trouble with your ring
LoL ronnie!!
Good persistence Kenny I think I would’ve given up on it
I spoke about that with our friend Bill this morning and when you are fixing things for other people especially friends or coworkers the pressure is on. Flipping or doing for yourself seems a lot less stressful. Thanks for watching
Thanks Ken. Any Honda info is great for me right now.
They keep us thinking Bruce!
@@KensSmallEngineRepair They are different for sure.
Interesting one Ken. With no ring tension, probably was over-heated. Rick
Good to know ken great job and video 👍
Thanks for watching!
Nice work Ken
Thanks Hank!
For me personally I'd have thrown it away but I don't deal with customers , nice one Ken 👍
It is stressful trying to figure out a problem with a small engine for a friend or coworker. I did a complete leak down and compression test and the engine met specification and wasn’t leaking out the breather so I assumed the rings were good! It appears they just didn’t have enough tension to hold back oil while running and under the load of combustion and compression while running.
Nice discover ken 😎👍
Good one Kenny - sounded like a real head scratcher
Especially when no blow by!
@@KensSmallEngineRepair Yes it would have had me running in circles for a week
good video Ken..
Took 2 tries but got her done!
Good to know Thanks
Thanks for watching Jimmy. Hope all is well. I may not chime in but I am watching your lives lol!
Hey Ken , did you order a gasket kit or use gasket in a tube ? Thanks for the video , learn something new today .

Great video Ken! I believe your right. Probably was run low on oil that theory makes perfect sense. Would you happen to know the idle speed spec on this particular engine gcv 160?
Here in the states most if not all push mowers only have one speed, no idle adjustment as is common in the UK. If I were to guess I would say 1200-1500 would be a good idle speed to ensure the connecting rod oil dipper functions properly.
@@KensSmallEngineRepair awesome Ken, I just wasn't sure if it could be adjusted or not. Thank you
Sorry Kenny silly question i take it the old rings where toast
hence having to file the new rings.
The new Top Ring was the only one that needed filing as it’s gap in the bore was only 0.005 and the spec is 0.008/0.014 inch. I sanded it and then stoned the burrs created on the edges smooth so no scoring would occur in the bore. The other gaps were within factory specs out of their packages. My theory is overheating from running it low on oil caused the rings to lose temper and had low tension allowing oil to pass by them.
@@KensSmallEngineRepair Got you Ken .
G R E A T ,,, J O B ,,, Ken!!!
Glad to be rid of it!
Did you do a compression test?
I read somewhere that there's a bypass of some sort on these engines that won't allow the compression to go above 30(?) psi when starting it.
I've got a GCV190 that smokes and runs rough. Trying to figure it out...
Automatic Compression Releases generally result in a cranking pressure of around 60psi
Ken I got a GXV160 on a HRC216 mower and I hear a pop or misfire it sounds only at full throttle when its warm. Is the exhaust valve not sealing properly?
Is the fuel fresh? What does the plug look like? A nice Chocolate Brown or Lean White like Snow? Most of these engines are designed for emissions to run lean and high speed lean misfiring is common. At night, is the muffler glowing? a sure sign of a leaking exhaust valve. Have you done a leakdown test?
Was the motor loud at an idle? I have an hrx217, smokes like crazy. Noisy at idle, runs very smooth at high rpm.
This mower was fixed rpm at around 3400, no idle speed
I notice with Caber rings, they have more tension.
I’ve used Cabers for chainsaws, do they make for Hondas?
@@KensSmallEngineRepair Pretty sure they do.
Dude: That's a GCV engine on your mower ... not a GXV
Trying to get pressure washer to work when engine seemed to bog down, then all of a sudden it started belching out billowing clouds of smoke. What might have happened... rings?
Valve seal? ??????
Did you tip it to one side? A ring could have broke. Can you do a leak down test? That would confirm rings or valves
Pressure test revealed only 60#. Since it happened suddenly, I'm guessing a ring. Thanks for your reply!@@KensSmallEngineRepair
@Patriottoo2 I put about 15 psi in the spark plug hole and rotate the engine to TDC to see if air comes out of the muffler or carb (valves) or the dipstick (rings)
Is it smoking all the time now?
Yes, billowing reduced to continuous smoking at 60 psi.@@KensSmallEngineRepair
Will ken i would have said come get it i quit lol
They are great engines, and super simple!
Yeah it got a little hot
I think so
