    If it's fusible on both sides, that's not interfacing but maybe a fusible webbing. Interfacing is used to stabilize fabric and give it body. Webbing is used to fuse two fabrics together, like for doing applique. Sorry to hear about your iron. you're not the first person to do this. I read that if you put your iron on high heat and iron dryer sheets it should take it right off. If that doesn't work they sell iron cleaners at the fabric store.

    @kingdomhearts For fusible interfacing to work, it needs to get as hot as possible. The dampness helps because the water turns into steam, heating the glue. If I iron a spot that wasn't damp, I can tell because although it appears to stick at first, it'll eventually start to peel off. If you have a fabric that should not get wet or can't handle a lot of heat, that means that you should use the sew in interfacing. Instead of fusing, I just baste the pieces to each other. Hope that helps.

      Professor Pincushion my interfacing says I must baste first, is that ok?

    Thanks. Very well explained. Joanne Fabric site teaches a different way to fuse the interface to the fabric. They put the iron right on the fabric. Your technique is the other way around by putting the iron on the interface on a damp cloth with the interfacing underneath.

    If you're using a men's shirt that's like a button down shirt, you probably don't need to use interfacing. For tshirts, you can use a lightweight knit interfacing.

      The water on the damp cloth will create it's own steam. you don't need double steam but it won't hurt anything.

      Janice O'Malley hmmm...I've had this happen to a whole roll of fusible interfacing, it was so annoying, but I think it was my own fault because it was some discount cheap stuff that was on super sale. Buying quality fusible interfacing is really the best thing to do. For the stuff you already have, make it the same size of the fabric piece (without trimming the interfacing smaller), so when you start stitching, the stitches will also go through the interfacing. Even if it separates in the middle of the piece, it'll still stay in place. So it'll basically work like sew-in interfacing which is only held in at the seams. Hope this helps :)

    So can you use paper backed fusible webbing on fleece? My 13 year old daughter is making a pillow that has an owl applique on it. The pattern says to use fusible webbing but I'm not sure if it can..or should be.... used on fleece. Your expertise is most appreciated! Thank you so much!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  8 років тому

      check the care instructions on the bolt label. I know I've purchased fleece before where it stated not to iron it. It could be some fleece can't handle a high enough heat that is necessary to use fusible webbing. You could always just pin the applique on and either machine or hand stitch it into place without using fusible webbing. Fleece usually has enough stabilization that you'll be fine without it. :)

    Salutations, I have a question regarding fusible interfacing. I was wondering if you can bind a piece of fabric that had been bond with fusible interfacing to another piece of material, using iron on sewing tape such as Heat n Bond or stitch switcher?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 років тому

      I would suppose so but what purpose is the interfacing serving. The fusible webbing will already stiffen up the area and it seems redundant to also have interfacing involved.

    I hv a question? I have sewn my sleeves onto my top but looking at the item I want to add a little more structure. 😖🤔 I wanted to know if I turn the sleeves inside out could I add the interfacing without sem ripping everything all down again? Just adding it to the sleeving only????

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 років тому

      hmmmm....honestly, I've never seen interfacing added to sleeves before. You could add lining though and see if that helps. We have a tutorial on our channel for sleeve lining.

      dragonfly95100 it is necessary so you don't burn your material or interfacing. The steam allows it to fuse properly also.

    I realize you made this video several years ago so I am hoping you’ll see this comment/inquiry. I am making a detached satin bow belt for a baby’s “Aurora” (Sleeping Beauty) dress. Because the bow belt is detached, I wanted it to be sturdy and I ironed fusible interfacing onto the fabric. My problem is my Brother SE400 machine does not like sewing through the fabric with the interfacing attached to it. It jams my machine. I switched my needle to heavyweight, and rethreaded both the top and bobbin threads and still the problem occurs with knotted threading on the underside and the machine jamming. Is this normal for interfacing? The interfacing I used is mainly for collars. I thought the thickness would be perfect for my purpose. So now I need to be super careful, making sure to sew inside the seam allowance. Do you have any advice you can share with me about my dilemma? Thank you for your very helpful videos and for all the knowledge you share with the sewing community!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 років тому +1

      hmmm....that is weird that your machine's motor doesn't seem strong enough for sewing through fabric and interfacing. I haven't had that issue before. Your machine might be due for a cleaning and maintenance. If it's always had this issue, maybe there's something defective about the machine. It should be able to do it and your machine doesn't look like a cheap one. :(

    • @alicebrown60
      @alicebrown60 6 років тому

      Professor Pincushion Thank you for responding! Ugh, I was at my wit’s end trying to figure out why my machine wasn’t sewing through the interfacing. But I kept tinkering with it and decided to actually try a thinner embroidery needle and, where the heavy duty needle could not go through it, the thin needle was able to pierce through the fabric with interfacing without any problems. So I was able to make the belt and save the dress! Thank you for your very helpful tutorials and valuable insight! 😊

    so using interfacing is optional??

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  9 років тому

      Kathy Soler your pattern will tell you if you need interfacing. Some areas like collars, button bands, cuffs, and facing pieces really benefit from interfacing so the area isn't too flimsy but it also depends on your fabric. If you're making something light and airy with a fabric like chiffon, you may use organza instead of interfacing to stabilize the area. We talk a little bit about this in our tutorial Interfacing 101.

      Kathy Soler It depends on what kind of bag you want. If you use craft interfacing it'll be really stiff and structured. Or you can use something like fusible fleece that will give it body and a little bit of structure.
