    I guess the YT algorithm wanted me to catch this again in light of the current racing. What a moment to relive. I'm so glad that everyone made it out in one piece.

    Mighty good effort getting that boat back off the reef, not to mention removing all the fuel etc that could contaminate the reef. Well done

      Like he said, at some point there is too much information and you don't see the big picture.
      They cover about 200 miles a night, Expedition (most used program for navigation) has a depth warning implemented, but still the program says to check the whole route before sailing it.
      Checking 200 miles worth of route through the ocean is a hard task but he has to do it everytime, no doubt.
      Mistakes happen but in the end you are responsible as a navigator for this and you can NEVER rely on a feature of a program to truly save you from those situations.

      @@hinni1997 No, this is lesson 1 in navigation at sea, you always check real charts. He has used GPS and didn't zoom in enough, they repaired the boat and saild the last stage but the navigaor was fired. Sailing on GPS alone is vewry dangerous and tricky because of the zoom level, the reason you always check the chart were it's always visible.

      And how do you want to check your position without GPS? Via astronomical nav or drawing your course into the chart? :D
      Zooming into an up to date chart presents the same benefits as paper charts, just his mistake of becoming careless when using his tools.

    If a well funded boat with professional crew run aground in the middle of an ocean the rest of us sailors have no chance!!! Admittedly we will hit the ground at only 5 knots :))

    How on earth did they manage to pile into a well marked reef shown on the chart plotter .What was the officer of the watch doing to let it happen ?

    • @percivalhowell7516
      @percivalhowell7516 5 років тому +3

      The navigator Wouter Verbraak relied on 2 electronic charts - one showed 80 m. depth over reef, the other showed 40-45 m. depth over reef. He neglected to confirm data via paper chart. Those islands & surrounding reefs have been well known to navigators for many years.
      Wouter was fired.

    • @percivalhowell7516
      @percivalhowell7516 5 років тому +1

      @@farzana6676 There was a failure to zoom the c-map chart plotter to the appropriate level in the square when the capt & navigator chose route. This, in conjunction with not consulting their paper chart (which showed the shoals) contributed to the crash. Their secondary chart plotter showed depths that indicated safe passage which only added to the confusion.
      An independent commission was formed by the VOR in December of that year to investigate and publish their full findings regarding the causes leading up this crash. An 81 page report is available online, which details the whole event, including many errors on the crew's part regarding chart management and operation. It's a good read, I recommend it -

    "Boat is coming apart". Actually the boat survives the sailors usually. Leaving the boat usually kills them. Raft is less safe.. Boat is found drifting in OK condition later. But here they hit land..

      Thanks for this. Very true point and the 79 fastnet is a good example of this. What amazes me about this video is that there is nothing which explains the error. The "Forest for the trees" argument does not hold for this level of professionality. If vestas was my team my first question would be "how the hell did you guys run aground?"
