    It's possible this gets played on UK radio (and in stores) about once every ten minutes during the holiday season; almost as if Christmas hasn't begun until it's played. How much this one tune (the third of 3 No.1 singles Slade had in the year of its release - all of which went straight in at the top - and the first of which was sitting there the night I was born) has netted songwriter and head-screamer Neville 'Noddy' Holder is unknown, but it can't be a small amount.

    I was working in Wolverhampton in the early 70s when a pub band ‘Ambrose Slade’, before they shortened their name. Noddy Holder, the singer shouted. ‘We’re going to play a number for you, now. It’s called ‘Open the Door on me Richard, Don’t Close the Door on me Dick’

    48 years after it's first release, it's currently back in the UK Top 30. I read somewhere recently, that every February, the two writers, singer/guitarist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, receive a royalty cheque for nearly a quarter of a million pounds for the amount of times this is played in public in the build up to Christmas. You really need to check out more Slade. They were one of the biggest bands of the early 70's. Only The US didn't seem to 'get' them. They were massive everywhere else in the World. They had 3 singles that entered the charts at number 1. Not even The Beatles managed that. And Slade were one of the greatest live bands ever.

    Fun fact: Noddy Holder, the singer, originally comes from the same part of England as Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin and, before Robert Plant was famous, Noddy used to drive him to and from gigs in his father's van. Noddy's father was a window cleaner so the van was full of clanking buckets. That was before Noddy was famous too. Robert really rates Noddy's voice and has tried (unsuccessfully) to persuade him to return to a singing career.

    Love, love, love this one. I was 14 when it came out so it's been part of every Xmas since then. It's massive in the UK and like the Pogues and Kirsty it heralds the Xmas season here. I love the energy of it. I hope you have Wizard with 'I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day' (Al Murray made a joke about it in one of his clips). Another high energy and visually sumptuous display. So glad you enjoyed it.

    I think the song was recorded in New York on a hot summer's day. The shout near the end, 'it's Christmas' was shouted up a lift shaft to get the echo effect.

    • @crowhillian58
      @crowhillian58 2 роки тому +1

      Yes you are right, recorded in NY in the middle of a heatwave. The tune itself was written in the late 60s and was intended to be a melodic hippyish song.

    I've met singer Noddy Holder in Wolverhampton and guitarist Dave Hill in Ironbridge. Both were very humble in their conversations as they were once one of the biggest bands in the UK in the 1970's. Many consider Noddy to have one of the most powerful rock voices. They were the original songwriter/singers of 'Cum on feel the Noize' as well that was covered in the USA by Quiet Riot.

    Great and refreshing to hear your reactions to something new to you, which I have known since its release 48 years ago! Slade were massive in the UK 1971-4. Apart from this, all their best-known hits had misspelt titles: Cum on feel the noize (which you know), Mama, weer all krazee now, Coz I luv u, Take me bak ome and Gudbuy t´Jane, among others. When, with Far, far away in 1974, they started to use standard spellings, their star was on the wane. It´s hard to overstate how huge a part of Christmas this song is in the UK, especially at office parties.
