Very informative podcast! Can you cover your transportation into and out of the backcountry and how you coordinated that?
Before I moved up here, the cheapest way to take meat back to the lower 48 was always just pack it in 50lb boxes and fly with it, was considerably less than shipping. I haven’t looked at it in a while so I can’t say if it’s still that way or not.
Getting the meat out is always top priority of any hunt. I think a lot of people don’t plan for this fact going out of their home states. Over my hunts to other states I have learned a lot over the years. There is nothing like connecting with the locals. I now have connections for meat storage in a lot of the states now for literally offering up a few steaks. My Dad had done the float trips in AK before the current situation and it was affordable to drive. They would load full size freezers and mounted a generator on the bumper of the truck to run the freezers. Also the hassles now at the borders weren’t like the current state. Air cargo is the way to go out of AK. It isn’t free but if making a trip of a lifetime budgeting extra money for transporting the meat/horns is a must. You are paying for the convenience with air cargo and the fact that it will be put in a freezer until you pick it up is priceless. Also the advice of getting the right person in the shipping office can make a lot of difference. Be persistent but not abrasive will get better results. Great podcast!
Great discussion guys! I went to Kodiak in November for Sitka Blacktails. Only had one 50 lb. box. With my Alaska credit card I was charged $70 total for my oversized checked bag and meat. All went smooth as silk.
This hunt has been a life long dream for me and the information you guys are sharing is priceless. The couple times I have talked to you guys at the Western Hunting Expo you guys have been more than willing to talk to anyone that talks to you, even Hillary and Suzanne.
Thanks 🙏 for breaking this down for many of us. It is probably the most mental block or obstacle for those who dream of hunting Alaska. Especially beasts that have antlers vs say a bear 🐻 which would be cool too.
I was blessed to win a waterfowl hunting 🦆and salmon/halibut/cod fishing 🎣 trip for Sept of 21, 9 months after my beloved Momma passed to Heaven.
It was my first flight ✈️ ever and I packed a little more than I should have which cost more. The trip through TSA with our shotguns and ammo (which we just locked 🔒 and put in our luggage 🧳) went smoother than we expected.
For the return flight ✈️ was more of a hassle for us since we got delayed then cancelled in Anchorage. Waiting in line for hours to transfer flights. All the while our 50 lb fish box 📦 as you mentioned is sitting there with frozen salmon, cod, black bass, and brant goose and the ptarmigan that I wanted to get mounted. Then a 6 hour layover in Seattle. Thankfully the flight to Pittsburgh, PA was only 4 hours and most importantly was that our meat was still frozen with a little bit of thaw, but not much.
I definitely want to do the moose and caribou trip, but that’s going to be a while.

What absolutely great information! Thanks for all the valuable details that truly will save people money. Back in 2014 an Alaska resident friend and I did a European mount of my caribou before I flew home. We built a lightweight create to ship it to Colorado and that little jewel cost me $750 back then. The only benefit for me was having it 'wall ready', but I think your approach is far superior. Thanks for sharing.
trash compactor bags are much better than contractor bags. have to pay attention to the size (gallons) and opening size.. they tend to be a little more narrow, but much better at containing leaks, condensation, etc.
Have brought meat home from AK many times...not game meat but fish, very similar process. We filet our fish on the river then vacuum pack and get it in freezer as soon as we get back to camp. We buy fish boxes and the day of our flight home box up the frozen filets, weigh the boxes and duct tape them up. We check them as checked bags...no cheaper way to do it and no dry ice needed. Even in July/Aug the fish is still frozen solid when we get back home, never had an issue.

Drove to Alaska with a freezer and small generator in the back of my truck and used that to haul my moose back to Utah two years ago. Everything fit in the freezer and made it home in great shape. If I were to do this again, I would process the meat in Alaska like you guys did because trying to get a block of frozen moose quarters out of the freezer back home was a nightmare! My son was first in line for his flight home with the skull and antlers so no problems there. The drive to/from Alaska is something I can't wait to do again!
Right on guys, good info, a lot of planning in advance is necessary for these hunts.
Interesting listening to your process. Four of us went up in 1996. We shipped four caribou home in waxed boxes no issues. Alaska airlines did lose one gun case with two rifles and one duffel bag of gear. Left extreme bad taste for whole trip. My rifle is still listed as stolen. Airlines compensated us but lost rifle I had bought with paper route money as a kid. Rifle was priceless to me, still hurts.
Been up north for 2 successful moose hunts and we’ve had awesome luck using Alaska Air Cargo instead of flying it with us. I think the price was $200 for a pallet last year, we had meat processed and put a new chest freezer on a pallet and plugged it in for everything to freeze. Brought it to Air Cargo and they used a forklift and it took 2 minutes. Said they haven’t had anyone do that before and it was a killer idea. Expensive shipping stuff to SE AK. Not sure about out of state stuff
This was very informative, things you don't see on other shows, and everyone is wondering what it takes to pull off an epic hunt. On another note I was able to score a headlamp by being on Gritty's email list, definitely worth everyone's time and they only send important messages, no spam.

I wish we’d have had this video before heading up with our fiasco 😅 For those who don’t know, linear inches is not a single measurement of width. It is the width+length+depth. Alaska air also only will fly one set of antlers per flight now- on a first come, first serve basis. So even if ours had been small enough, there was a guy who got there just before us so ours wouldn’t have gone on that flight anyways. Hope this helps someone else not stand at the airline checkin at 1am with a giant bull only to get rejected because on the phone, Alaska air said “oh yeah, 71” is less than the linear measurement so you can check it as a bag no problem” turns out- you cannot 😂
GREAT INFO! I forgot about the “first come, first serve” thing. Best to use Air Cargo altogether and avoid the airline issues. But that’s what you get for shooting a 71” moose! 👊🏼😜

I have brought fish back from Alaska many times. More info or pictures of how you brought antlers back would be a big help. You sait you used a lot of cardboard but the explanation was more like the antlers are just open.

That the longest living black bear in the wild was recorded by the Minnesota Game Commission and it was a 39 1/2 year old sow. Which ended up dying of old age. WOW!

I’ve been looking for videos on the hunt Alaska topic. Great job guys on the info provided. Could you guys put together a cost breakdown of transportation from airport to hunt location and that whole process.
Any more details on the air cargo shipment of your skulls and antlers? You said you had to wrap the points and used cardboard, but did you also wrap the skulls in cardboard? Trying to picture the final product that you handed over...would love to see pics. Wondering why they will ship it this way but taxidermists seem to want to crate euros which greatly adds $$$$ to things

When we flew back with our caribou, we had to split the skulls due to space. It didn’t sound like you had to do that? We also used air cargo, it it didn’t go as smoothly as your experience unfortunately. We did check our meat and it worked well. Thanks for the info.

Hey guys! When you took the packaged meat to the freezer. Did you pull out the packages, and spread them out to get a good freeze? I made a mistake one year, with deer burger meat. I had it all in a cardboard box. I put the whole box in the freezer. The outer packages of meat froze, and insulated the interior packages of meat! Unfortunately, I ended up with spoilage!
thanks very helpful and lots of good information. What about during the float what did you put meat in to keep dry, I would think there would be a lot of water splash while floating? But I would think plastic bags would be bad because it would retain the moisture. Were any of the antlers in velvet and if so how did you keep those from rotting during the float and hunt. thanks again, you guys are awesome

I got no idea what a "Fish Box" is... can you link or explain that? Also, when you froze the meat, were the bags in these fish boxes? and was the box sealed up and taped up before it was frozen, or afterward? Thanks for the vids, great stuff.
Its a wax lined cardboard box that keeps temp for awhile longer.
